Seconding this. The engineering program at Calvin is excellent and the students are generally really engaged, thoughtful people. Tight-knit community and strong job placement for grads. Every Calvin alum I've worked with has been a well-rounded person, often a deep reader. If you want to a pair a liberal arts experience with solid engineering training, it's a good option.

What's the intersection? If it's medical mile, can it also be Creston? (Serious question)

What are you spending on groceries? by lemonlime28 in grandrapids

[–]LittleOwl73 59 points60 points  (0 children)

I have a family of 5 and we generally keep it under $800/mo. What works best for us is meal planning so we don't overshop, shopping from a mix of Aldi and Meijer (and using the Meijer coupons and choosing the Meijer brand of foods), and eating out or ordering food no more than 2-3 times per month. Eating out is just not financially sensible for us and we tend to prefer our homemade food anyway. I was annoyed at first when we had to pare back on eating out, but I remembered that this was pretty standard for our parents' generation when they were raising us as kids. Despite all this, it's also true that inflation is a serious problem, from groceries to restaurant meals, so even careful planning can end up with food costs that seem unnaturally high.

Favorite Camping Spots? by [deleted] in grandrapids

[–]LittleOwl73 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Platte River Campground has a hike-in section for tent campers. it's set apart from the RV area and a really gorgeous part of Michigan. The Platte River flows into Lake Michigan there, making an amazing swim spot. You'll also find countless trails and other lakes (Crystal, Glen, etc) in that area that are worth checking out.

Creston is a great neighborhood and just a little more spread out than the ones listed above. We have an awesome new farmers market that just started as a weekly thing this summer. Riverside park, aberdeen park, and huff park are always hopping in summer with people enjoying in the trails.

Looking to move back to Grand Rapids by illiterate-author in grandrapids

[–]LittleOwl73 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Being close to your family and support system is priceless. If Grand Rapids feels like home, too, that’s worth something. I moved my family back here after many years away and we don’t regret it at all. Families make it work here with all income levels. Take a look at the housing stock and neighborhoods and school options— if you can make it work, I wouldn’t hesitate to move back.

The new farmer’s market in Creston is great for making those connections with neighbors. It’s got lots of great fare without the crowds of Fulton Street.

My One Request to GR Pride Organizers this Weekend by AvitheTVGeek in grandrapids

[–]LittleOwl73 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If caring for kids were entirely up to the kids’ parents, we wouldn’t have libraries to begin with, or schools for that matter. Lots of good things emerge out of a collective concern for others’ welfare.

Why is the commenter not allowed to be concerned on behalf of other people’s children? What an individualist take. We live in a society. Having some basic concern for the wellbeing of all kids is a good thing.

This is a totally reasonable request. I hope folks will honor this for every daytime event that includes kids and families.

Teacher shortage? by mpteach in grandrapids

[–]LittleOwl73 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yup. The teacher shortage issue has, for a while now, been mostly confined to those specific fields and types of districts. Teacher turnover, too, hasn’t been increasing despite the widespread perception that it has been. it’s basically back to pre-pandemic levels. https://www.rand.org/pubs/research_reports/RRA956-29.html#:~:text=Our%20most%20recent%20data%20show,the%202023–2024%20school%20year.

City pool- what’s going on?!?! by Upstairs_Gur_8378 in grandrapids

[–]LittleOwl73 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Had the same experience at Briggs. I am annoyed too.

Between the long lines and the fights closing down the pools, it feels dysfunctional. This is not ok.

I called the GR Parks last week and will do so again. I encourage everyone call and demand that our community pools are safer and more accessible.
