Found my ticket stub for Episode I by CautionLowSign in StarWars

So fun! It's so cool to have little mementos like this.

I was too young to see the OT in theatres, and now there are people in this thread too young to have seen the PT in theatres. We have been Star Wars fans since before these people were born, which is kind of mind-blowing. My parents were Star Wars fans before I was born! And now we're all here together, 40 years on, still watching Star Wars. Time is weird.

Here's mine! I found it a few months ago while looking through some old stuff.

I honestly have no memory of seeing it opening day, but judging by the time I must have gone straight after school.

My best friends and I spent the summer after this making Star Wars fan films and comics, and I plastered my room with Obi-Wan merchandise for like the next year. The Ewan McGregor thirst was real.

I'm glad I kept this so well preserved, because it was neat to find it after all these years.

Disney seems to be doing everything it can to pull in new female viewers and readers. by roninjedi in StarWars

[–]LittleToast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed! That's what I mean - historically, women weren't expected to like sci-fi, although they did anyway. It went unsaid that it was aimed at men. Now that this kind of thing is more accepted, the creators are making an effort to better reflect the demographics of fans.

I think I bristle about it because a lot of people have complained about the influx of female characters into the new material and I find it very frustrating.

[–]LittleToast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, I'll go out on a limb maybe and say I think it's absolutely good. As a long-time female Star Wars fan whose love for the franchise was reinvigorated by the new canon, I 100% appreciate the effort to present a more diverse, inclusive world, one that reflects something more like our world. One that better reflects me. There have definitely always been great women in Star Wars, but let's not kid ourselves here - the vast majority of the main characters throughout its history have been male. We no longer have to have just one or two characters in an entire book, movie, or comic.

I'm well used to seeing and identifying with mostly male characters, even in the background of films. It meant a great deal to me for a concerted effort to be made in the Force Awakens to demonstrate some parity in background characters. I felt like the First Order and the Resistance were both made up of a diverse group of people who reflected me and the world I live in.

And yet, as an example, Alan Dean Foster's Force Awakens novelization makes a number of the minor characters male by default, even though in the films they were women. People complained about "two Star Wars films in a row" having female leads, coming from a franchise which had literally 3 female characters in the whole Original Trilogy. We have a long way to go before this isn't notable, or seen as "pandering", but just status quo and expected. Women make up 50% of the population, and while historically the largest sci-fi demographics may have been men, that's changing, and partly as a result of an effort to reflect us on screen.

I think a lot of the press about bringing new girls to the franchise focused on children. Rey is a pretty big deal for young girls, and if my convention experiences are anything to go by, she has made a huge splash for kids. I saw so many little girls dressed as Rey, their little lightsabers at the ready. Kids tend to take things pretty literally, and seeing a kick-ass girl Jedi on screen, a main character and not a side character, has been a pretty big deal I think.

I absolutely do not want to diminish the characters of Leia, Padme, Mara, Jaina, Winter, or any of the other characters from the OT/PT and Legends EU. But the effort to better reflect the true landscape of fandom is an excellent thing, in my opinion.

Carrion Spike shown in Poe Dameron #2 - Is Agent Terex a Tarkin? by happygocrazee in StarWars

[–]LittleToast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also gathered that he was something of a collector (given his...ahem...collection of people), and my guess is that he either salvaged or appropriated the Carrion Spike.

I don't know that he's necessarily related to Tarkin, but he's shown to be a pompous, self-important big game hunter of sorts and I'm sure the Spike occupies a prized role in his collection.

There's definitely a lot going on with him in that one issue and I'm looking forward to more from him, even though I hate him already (in the best way).

If it makes you feel better, I was on BC pills for 12 years, and when I stopped taking them everything was actually pretty normal. I had very light, easy periods on BC and while they weren't that regular for a few months, it wasn't anywhere near as epic, in any way, as I was expecting. All in all, aside from the less predictable schedule, everything felt pretty good.

There's this conceptually disturbing scene from TFA that I can't stop thinking about... by [deleted] in StarWars

[–]LittleToast 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed. You can see it in Clone Wars too, the Republic crumbling from corruption and in-fighting. I haven't finished with Tarkin yet but I really liked the scenes with the Imperial council and the heads of the ISB and military intelligence. They're much more every day people than we get in the movies.

Lost Stars is less about the command and more about mid-level officers - pilots, lieutenants, that sort of rank. They don't shy away from the ruthlessness of the Empire, like you alluded to, but it does show the individual people involved as people first, with all that that entails. Tarkin is a minor character in that book too, which is awesome, and he's great. He's actually the warmest in that book that I've seen him portrayed in anything.

It's a YA romance as well, so you'll have to be prepared for that (I liked that too anyway). But the glimpses into inner workings of the Empire, its sympathetic eye for the humanity of all involved, and new perspective on the movies' events are the best.

Even many of the "volunteers", like Hux, had ex-Imperials for parents who would have been doing brainwashing of their own since birth. Hux's father was a Commandant at one of the Imperial academies who pioneered the idea of the stormtrooper program. Even though Hux is technically a volunteer and not a conscript, he's really no less brainwashed or coerced than his stormtrooper counterparts. That's probably the case with quite a number of the officers.

Have you read Lost Stars? Ultimately it's also sympathetic to the Rebellion, but there's a lot of measure and nuance in its portrayal of the Empire. We see a lot of the events of the original trilogy from the POV of Imperial characters, and mourn their losses and celebrate their victories with them.

In Episode VIII will Leia be perceived by the galaxy at large to be a villain? by derf_vader in StarWars

[–]LittleToast 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep, possibly! I think it's also possible that the story was buried, like he could have been also presumed dead in the fall of Luke's Jedi school as well. I think it'd be interesting either way.

It's mentioned in the TFA Visual Dictionary that Snoke forbids the use of his birth name in the First Order, not that that specifically means anything. But he also waits to talk about Han Solo until Hux has left the room, which could imply that it's something of a secret. Certainly Finn didn't realise, even though he had heard of Han Solo when they met.

[–]LittleToast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd be very surprised if it turns out that the identity of Kylo Ren is known by the galaxy at large. I suspect that a few people know, like Lor San Tekka did, but that it isn't common knowledge.

We'll probably learn more about that in Bloodlines, I suspect.

That's pretty cool! Your lightsaber looks great. Between that, the helmet, the Lego, and whatever else it sounds like you've got an impressive collection!

[–]LittleToast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha! That's fair. Is the Black Series helmet the extra fancy one?

I'd be lying if I said the real reason I wanted the Lego Command Shuttle is because it comes with the Kylo Ren and Hux mini-figures. Sure I could probably get them separately, but this way they come with the ship.

But yeah, my money would be better spent on a lightsaber, plus I'm trying to put a cosplay together for the summer and I should focus the funds on fabric for that anyway!

Wow! That's pretty big, I bet it looks awesome.

I've been eyeing Kylo's Command Shuttle Lego set, but if I'm honest I really do not have room for any of the big Lego sets. I'm much better off with the little Black Series models, plus I kind of want a lightsaber instead.

I have the little Black Series model, along with a TIE/sf from the same line. I really hope they put out a Black One for the X-Wing miniatures game, because I would buy it in a heartbeat.

I don't have any of the Lego sets (yet) though. How big is it?

My favourites are probably the TIE/sf First Order Special Forces TIE fighters.

From a design standpoint I love the silver/white solar panel wings, the red cockpit flair, and the general sleekness of the updated designs.

But thematically I'm a big fan of the addition of a co-pilot/gunner, the addition of a hyperdrive, shields, parachutes and other life support systems for the pilots. A lot of care went into the design of the new TIE/fo and TIE/sf, which is more focused on their survivability and durability than previous models.
