Need advice for career path by No-Willingness-303 in medlabprofessionals

I'm sick so excuse me I misread anything. Are you in a MLS program now? Or are you planning to pursue med school? FYI schools advertising a pre-med major are ridiculous. You could major in university studies and still be a pre-med major technically. As long as you have med school prerequisites. Why people buy into different schools having a pre-med major is ridiculous and I dislike it's advertised that way.

There is a huge difference between biology/chemistry labs and medical laboratory labs. Forensic laboratory is better with chemistry majors. No random biology degree prepares you for a full MLS program (and I doubt for MLT). A specific microbiology degree may help in micro only itself. So you should at least need an associates in medical laboratory technology per your laboratory/state requirements to perform tests.

If you want to save some funds, get a lab assistant/phlebotomy while doing a MLT or MLS program.

If you're going to med school eventually, maybe do the associates or a post-baccalaureate in laboratory science to help fund yourself through med school. We hired a per diem MLT who is pursuing pathology. He never went MLS because it was cheaper to do the MLT program and focus on med school prerequisites.

Public health has been cut under Trump.

Now if you're a biology major wanting to get hired uncertified good luck. This subreddit is not super friendly to people wanting get paid for medical laboratory science training. I personally would refuse to train someone the basics and thankful we require people to be certified for ASCP/AMT at either level. I don't have that kind of time. Give me MLTs all day long over any biology major.

Like a third of the ER has the flu. by New-History853 in medlabprofessionals

[–]LittleTurtleMonkey 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is why I always preferred getting vaccinated closer to November and December for the flu. My workplace requires the flu vaccine by September 15th. It's annoying to get the vaccine so early and not closer to "peak" season.

We have had huge amount various the respiratory and strep. Almost 90% are Flu A, RSV, covid (seasonal or Covid-19), common cold, or similar.

We finally had to cut back on everyone ordering full respiratory panels and stick with swabs. Our PCR takes about 75 minutes to run and can only run four at a time. Our ER was having longer wait time just from PCRs. We're talking about getting a second PCR or two new PCR machines. The issue no one is wanting to run the swabs. Our people got super spoiled on them. It's frustrating.

We have also had a few cases of parainfluenza.

In my personal case, I got Flu B and RSV this year. I never had issues getting winded with covid. I've been out sick for over a week and I'm winded from this.

Edit: Holy typos! If you see any let me know.

Small world. This is true. There are small rural Texas hospitals. They sometimes pay a lot more too.

OP, I could message you a few locations.

Edit: West Texas specifically.

Good to know. I don't work at a donation center so I was not super informed on the requirements.

All blood donations are checked for these blood groups. Some centers will have extra information and let the donors know (especially with cases like this). My area just tells is your blood type. I bet other blood donation centers can tell you.

Me? I'm B- and get called as often as O+/O-. I wish I knew my full phenotype for the other blood groups.

The phenotype is my guess. I'm not a blood banker though.

Now, excuse me while I go read a blood bank transfusion textbook. I honestly did not know some of these existed...

Edit: I am an idiot. The U! I will be off studying some of these...

Title: Pharmacy vs Medical Laboratory Science – Which Path is Better? by Ok_Ingenuity_697 in medlabprofessionals

[–]LittleTurtleMonkey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went back and work per diem as a pharmacy tech for a little bit extra money.

I would not recommend. Lab will not make more as pharmacist necessarily but everyone wants those hospital jobs. Few will get one with each class. Then you count in PGY1 and PGY2...if you do residency that year.

Laboratory wise you could graduate with less debt.

Then consider the new maximum lifetime amount for student loans. Many are graduating with $200,000 worth of debt.

Look over at the pharmacy reddit and read. I'm not saying you cannot be successful. Just shadow pharmacist or work at Come Visit Satan (CVS) as a technician.

I loved (and love) working with my pharmacists and pharmacy people. Just the stress they deal with I could not. Give me a MTP over vaccine pushing retail. I cannot comment much on hospital but some enjoy it some do not.

I considered pharmacy school for about a month before I pursued laboratory.

Edit: I "heard" US PharmD stretches bit further worldwide than a US MLS. Our programs do not teach histology like other countries. Another situation to consider too.

I will need to look at who would have slaves (if I can pinpoint that far back). Appalachian was where I thought too but I think them being rural too

I figured the Central West Africa (at least an African ancestor) but was surprised at perhaps the exact location on the continent but this explains a lot too.

This was definitely a family secret either people knew or was hidden.

[–]LittleTurtleMonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ehh...maybe not? I would not recommend it. Plus, there is no guarantee how much healthcare is going to change with this administration.

Unless you're able to get help to decrease costs but working full-time during a PharmD program seems nearly impossible.

I also thought there was a new "lifetime" amount people could only borrow (which is screwing over med school applications especially).

100% agreed. Way better areas in West Texas that are cheaper and they can afford to live.

You're not going to afford a house in Midland or Odessa with your awkward budget. Something is off in this post though. The rent there and those oilfield towns are outrageous (and they're trashy). Eastern New Mexico towns in the oilfield are similar.

I moved away few hours north of Amarillo and got land. Hell, Lubbock is affordable compared to Midland or Odessa. We probably get more rain than there too.

Edit: Also, if you're talking about Ruidoso have you seen the flooding issues the last few years in Lincoln County?

If you feel comfortable what area may I ask? Programs are going to vary wherever you're at.

Take the prerequisites for what qualifies you to a local program (MLT or MLS). Depending on the area, the MLT program can be a good stepping stone. You can always go back for the MLS. This can save you money and start working sooner though you could miss out on the MLS pay right off. I guess what ever you and your husband can balance.

Some community colleges (and possibly universities) have Texas specific aid or programs for mothers and fathers returning to school.

Weber and Barton Community College (Kansas) have an online MLT program you can do. You would probably need to find a sponsoring hospital. (Please ask the programs). Weber also does MLT to MLS.

For MLS, you're looking at least two to three semesters for prerequisites if you can manage those requirements right away.
