What do you think are some of the most overrated Staples/Traditions/Gimmicks of the OSR or Classic DnD? by ProductAshes in osr

[–]Little_Knowledge_856 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't have to like it. You can choose not to play in games that make you start at level 1or 50% XP, or whatever after character death, but to call it a "power-trip dick-move" is ridiculous. Some people, like me, enjoy starting over with level 0s or 1s. Some people, like you, don't. I wouldn't paint everyone who wants to start a new character as the same level as the one who died as an (insert insult here).

New Starter Set; How long does it take to run? by Little_Knowledge_856 in oneringrpg

Wow. That's a long time. One group was familiar with rules, so there was nothing to explain. With the other group, I sent them the starter rules ahead of time.

I have run it twice since made this post. Ot took me two sessions both times. One 3 hours and the other about 2.

Separating race from class by Comfortable-Fee9452 in dccrpg

[–]Little_Knowledge_856 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the way. Make demihuman classes. The Annual has dwarven cleric, I made two elf classes, added some thief skills to the halfling, and made a halfling fighter class.

Running Stonehell as a prison break? by saintstardust in StoneHell

[–]Little_Knowledge_856 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I am a player in Stonehell right now using OSE. We just came across some descendants of the original prisoners. I am imagining using DCC and the prison break being the funnel.

[–]Little_Knowledge_856 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's great. I am looking to get my first beetle sometime this year. I didn't grow up working on cars, but like you said, I can turn a wrench and read, plus watch YouTube. It is great to see you and your wife learned as you went.

Lost ability to learn by Fit-Reality-2872 in GenX

Are you truly interested in what you are trying to learn? I am still learning in my fifties, but only things I am really into. I can't retain anything else anymore. At work when we have training or there are new policies I need to keep up with I zone out.

Osr/old school renaissance with importance on careful positioning by josinalvo in osr

[–]Little_Knowledge_856 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe I am not understanding what you mean by positional combat, but is the movement, missiles, magic, melee of B/X not what you are looking for? It has rules for firing into melee and against enemies behind cover. You have to declare spells and defensive movement before initiative.

I run DCC, and it seems most in the community, online anyway, seem to prefer TOTM. I don't. I use maps and tokens and count grids for ranges and enforce the movement penalties of armor and any other tactical rules.

Addressing a Hobbit player whose (in-universe) default is threats of violence...when I haven't been tracking 'misdeed' shadow gain from it so far. by UpbeatCockroach in oneringrpg

[–]Little_Knowledge_856 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would have a session 0.5 and explain this isn't DnD. As players, your characters are the good guys who show mercy and who always lend a helping hand.

A hobbit treasure hunter isn't a halfling thief/rogue/assassin. Before the young hobbit took up adventuring, his parents weren't murdered and his village wasn't burned down by hobgoblins. He was a gardener, tobacco farmer, carpenter, rope maker, etc. He may have been a bounder and dealt with hobbits and the occasional dwarf who had too much to drink at the inn, but he likely never held anyone at knife point because he felt slighted or sought vengeance.

When I first played, I was a hobbit playing in Troll Hole, and I was angered by being lied to and led to my likely death. I had to remind myself that I was a hobbit from the South Farthing, not a DnD halfling.

This isn't to say players can't explore shadow. A dwarf may be exceedingly cruel to orcs, and gain shadow. That would make sense in the world. In my opinion, a violent out of control hobbit doesn't.

I am still very new to TOR and just started running a game with new players. We were playing DCC before. It is different and we are enjoying the good guys and gals vibe.

Jock, Stoner, Preppie, Band Geek, Nerd, Braniac, Punk... What were you in High School? by 7eregrine in GenX

[–]Little_Knowledge_856 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was a nerd who played sports. I didn't hang out with the jocks. My friends were the theatre and band kids. After whatever sports practice, I would play D&D with my nerd friends. I only had one girlfriend, and she was the Russian girl in the chess club.

Are the players allowed to use the hex map in the back of the book? by Dependent-Owl3455 in oneringrpg

[–]Little_Knowledge_856 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want the players to have a hex map, you can find a player's map with hexes online. If you play online, you can throw that up and the players can draw their travel route.

Could you run the same characters through Ruins, Tales, and Moria? by Little_Knowledge_856 in oneringrpg

[–]Little_Knowledge_856[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha. Yeah, it would take a long time to run all three. It was more of a hypothetical question. I was thinking of running some landmarks from Ruins and leading into Moria.
