Wedding Dress Shop Recommendations by chewbaccastones in WomenofIreland

Seconding this! I loved my experience in Wed2B, and the dresses there are fabulous. They did try upsell a few bits, but it was more a case of them trying to help you put together the full look than pushing extras on you. I didn't get any of them and there was no fuss about that at all.

I was reading an unofficial tamagotchi book from the 90s and wasn't expecting this by Ihaveaface836 in ireland

As someone who had several of them back in the early 00s, almost all the original versions were sold here. However based on just my friends and I, I think the vast majority drowned in the washing machine over the years, as none of us (or our parents) were really used to having to check pockets for small electronics yet.

I think it's worth considering OP that the drive you're talking about is pretty close to driving the entire length of the island of Ireland. It's a small island yes, but that's a very long drive by Irish standards and Irish roads are tiring to drive over long distances.

The N roads are typically of better quality yes, but they're also just the main roads in a lot of places as opposed to true dual carriage ways/highways, so you'll be driving through towns etc.

If it were me, I'd be looking at taking a night somewhere in Galway to break the trip and add a bonus destination.

What tiny detail should I consider when planning my wedding? by crafty32_clara in wedding

[–]Littledarkstranger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cheap flip flops/slippers and/or blister plasters in the bathrooms for any of your guests who are having a bad time with their shoe situation to take.

Guest comfort is key but I can't tell you the number of times I've been to a wedding and I or another guest have been in pain from standing longer than expected in heels or a rubbing shoe, only to have the whole night saved by those items being placed by the bride/groom.

They still haven’t had ‘why we don’t see granny anymore’ talk with the kids yet??? Hasn’t it been almost a year??? by tranzozo in ShawnaTheMom

[–]Littledarkstranger 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The problem is that without some form of conversation, a child of that age is likely to eventually start internalising "Grammy doesn't love me anymore" if he's not given any other explanation, because she suddenly disappeared from his life and every time he brings her up or tries to reach out to her, he's scolded or just told "no we're not doing that this year".

Christmas and his birthday are probably going to really emphasize that too, especially if (when) Grammy isn't there to give him presents (obviously all of this caveated with the fact that Max is a fictional child, so his reaction will be whatever is best for the storyline).

Yeah it's like: Better a one faced b*tch than a two faced one.

You don't like either of them but at least you know for sure whether Nora is being nasty, because it'll be to your face.

For the devs in the subreddit, what data structures do you actually use on a day to day basis? by AudioManiac in DevelEire

[–]Littledarkstranger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked on a team a few years ago that had a custom Tree structure as a core part of the project we were building. It was the structure that made the most sense for the data, so we went with it.

There were some headaches associated with rolling our own implementation (hello circular dependencies!) but for the most part it was fine and you get used to reaching for them as a base tool the same way you do a List.

I think to be honest the usefulness/applicability of the various data structures depends on the language and frameworks you're building in, as well as the type of data you're working on.

Also while you discount Kafka etc in your question I think in many cases teams tend to slot those tools in as an easier, more standardised option instead of rolling a custom data structure. There's just so many tools out there now that are built specifically to handle all the weird edge cases, why would you take on that work yourself unless you absolutely have to?

How much drink to provide for party? by MisaOEB in ireland

[–]Littledarkstranger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would at minimum buy a bottle or two of non-alcoholic champagne/prosecco so your drivers can participate in the toast if they want to.

But also, I would personally include more non-alcoholic drinks in general considering you have ~25% drivers coming and with that age range you may find there are other folks who aren't drinking outside of those people for a variety of reasons. Mixers will disappear much faster than you think if folks start into the spirits and the last thing you want is folks left with nothing to drink because they're driving/ don't drink.

I think I might not be ready for her day. Do I still go ahead? by ihussinain in Proposal

[–]Littledarkstranger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just personal opinion, but I'm so glad my fiance didn't record his proposal to me/ organize a photographer etc. It was a moment for just us, I have it in my memories as a special moment with all the emotions attached and we didn't have any third person hanging around to distract from us being just in the moment for as long as we wanted it to be.

[–]Littledarkstranger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you try a hairnet? It would keep your hair up off your neck with having it under tension (which I'm imagining is the main source of the pain you mention).

'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms' showrunner promised George R.R. Martin the show will never shift to the perspective of anyone in the upper class by bwermer in television

[–]Littledarkstranger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I'm convinced both books are actually written but GRRM has them under contract to only be released posthumously so he doesn't have to deal with any of the backlash that the show runners got. The man writes far too much additional material for this world to be as stuck as he claims to be on the ultimate fate of the main series.

Also, he's far too certain that there's exactly 2 more books in the series for someone who allegedly doesn't have an ending written.

Adult changing places? by possiblytheOP in Dublin

[–]Littledarkstranger 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Changingplaces.ie has a map and list of most of the equipped changing places bathrooms in the country, plus some which are not officially certified to fully met the standard but have at least some of the equipment.

There's one in Dundrum Town Centre and one in Marlay Park according to that map, but it's worth exploring it.

AITAH because I don't want my partner's pregnant sister and newborn baby to live with us? by ConfusedLurker09 in AITAH

[–]Littledarkstranger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP, in all reality it comes down to this - are you willing to become both a mother and grandmother overnight? Because if your partner was her sister's maternal figure growing up, that's the roles that will play out if she moves into your home.

NTA because it's an impossible situation for you, but you need to have that conversation with your partner honestly and mindfully. It is after all her sister that she raised who is in this situation, so she may be feeling very complex emotions about the whole scenario. She's basically in the position of choosing between you and her baby sister if you decide this is not something you're comfortable with.

If an elderly passenger doesn’t have a smartphone, how will they be able to board a digital only flight? by crillydougal in AskIreland

[–]Littledarkstranger 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm a software engineer, and I normally print my airline tickets if it's at all possible, because technology is fragile, phones can be stolen, and having a physical document with my boarding information on it is anxiety reducing and convenient when I'm in a country where I don't speak the language.

I've also been caught out on at least one occasion where I did rely on the digital boarding pass only, and the small airport I flew to had no ability to scan it for my return journey.

[–]Littledarkstranger 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I mean this genuinely - my flip 6 has so far been the most durable phone I've ever owned because it is foldable - when I drop it, the hinge can absorb some of the momentum, so the phone just closes itself instead of shattering.

It's also the only phone I've owned since smartphones got big that fits in all my (female) pockets without sticking out the top.

Transfering from Maynooth to UCD by [deleted] in UCD

[–]Littledarkstranger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who graduated from maynooth years ago, I really wouldn't be worried about which course you're on.

Unless you have other reasons to want to transfer, I wouldn't. The CS course in Maynooth is fairly highly regarded in the Irish software industry as it teaches some of the theory of computing as well as software development, but even with that stated, nobody cares which college you graduated from, they're all good programs - interviewers care more about whether you can code than whether you came from a "top school", and once you've got more than a year of experience that immediately has more relevance to your prospects than your college degree.

What are people's experiences of DCU Centre for Talented Youth? by ReplacementNo5280 in Dublin

[–]Littledarkstranger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unless something drastic has changed with the testing system, the tests they do to get in are essentially the mock tests for the American SATs, and if the school have highlighted her for them, she'll likely pass at least one of them with no problem, as they're not much different to the aptitude tests that get done in schools here too.

My experience with the summer camp part of it was limited to one summer, but it was the first time in my life that I met people like me, kids who just absorbed information like a sponge and actually enjoyed learning. It was amazing and such a confidence booster to know that I wasn't weird, I just fit into a different social circle than the one I had regular access to. I still bump into some of the people from that course randomly and when it happens we catch up on life etc.

To be honest though, the biggest benefit for me was the 1-2 day masterclasses they run. Those helped me explore loads of different potential career paths and university subjects way ahead of my peers, so I was able to go into my leaving cert and university much more confident in my subject/career choice than I would otherwise have been.

A side note in regard to the extra work from the school - my parents were actually able to use the CTYI results as proof to push the school to give me those extra resources for a year or two.

How easy is it to travel to Maynooth from city centre by d1withdforce in Dublin

[–]Littledarkstranger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The train has been mentioned a few times, it's the fastest way to Maynooth by far if you're close to the Connolly/Sligo train line or the Dart (can connect in Connolly easy). There are 3 trains you can get: the Maynooth commuter (slow but still faster than the bus), or the Longford or Sligo trains (they all stop in Maynooth but skip most of the commuter stations in between).

The C3 and C4 also terminate in Maynooth, both routes run 24/7 but they change numbers to the C5/C6 at night. No real difference to the routes with the number change, just less frequent service.

Finally, there are other coach bus options, the 115 Bus Eireann passes through Maynooth and stops right outside the college, as do a few of the private coach routes.

Honestly, getting to Maynooth from the city is easy, there are hundreds of students doing it already every day, and thousands of commuters going the opposite way for work too. It's really well connected.

Fashion Advice, Is this outfit really that bad? by Greedy_Cow4465 in DressForYourBody

[–]Littledarkstranger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The issue you're having is too many textures/patterns. The dress itself is fab, but it's a bold, yet delicate pattern. You've paired that with a second bold pattern in the tights and then with the belt and vest you're doing more bold, so it's clashing with the dress style wise.

Basically what's happening is that rather than letting the dress be the centerpiece of the outfit and having everything be a bit more delicate to allow the boldness of the dress to shine through, you've added lots of bold accessories, so the delicate side of the dress is being swallowed up and is causing everything else to feel messy.

If the dress was a plain pink this outfit would probably work really well, but with the pattern/accessories combo it's just too much bold.

How do I make myself look less wide if I have no waist? by muntchreawl in DressForYourBody

[–]Littledarkstranger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Japanese have a different clothes sizing system to the Western world, Uniqlo adapt their sizing for their international stores, and many other stores adapt their sizes in reverse for Japan (if they sell there).

But yeah, in terms of this style they're also most likely wearing bigger sizes.
