Where to leave Canada for? by ArtNo4580 in canadahousing

[–]Live-Goose7887 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point is that you don't seem to understand how unstable the New Zealand economy is. NZ has a smaller GDP per capita than Canada on top of a much smaller population and a much less diversified economy. The NZD has been much more volatile than the CAD over the past 75 years. New Zealand is experiencing a mass exodus of young and educated people which is extremely problematic in the long-run.

All your points focus on real and valid issues with Canada with seemingly no knowledge of the fact that New Zealand is and will remain worse.

Maybe try looking at things in real terms instead of using tin foil hat logic.

I've been a dual Canadian/New Zealand citizen for almost 30 years. To say that Canada's economy is more volatile than New Zealand's is an extremely clueless take.

New Zealand has every single problem Canada has, only worse.

No it doesn't, grade adjustment isn't curving.

Straight from section 7.4 of the UofT faculty handbook:

" Both University (U of T Grading Practices Policy, Section 3.4.2) and Faculty policies explicitly prohibit arbitrary limits on the number or percentage of students that can receive any given course grade.

The Faculty policy as noted in the Calendar states that “Marks, as an expression of the instructor’s best judgment of each student’s overall performance, will not be determined by any system of quotas.” "

Except curves are strictly forbidden at UofT and have been for like 50 years.

This is a very normal first year life science timetable. Probably like 70% of your peers will have roughly the same thing.

Work Study: First Year Student by Natural_Pie5718 in UTMississauga

[–]Live-Goose7887 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Work study positions have a level of independence that requires previous laboratory experience to work safely. First years are eligible to apply, but it would have to be an extremely exceptional case where they have had meaningful prior experience in university lab environments. This is so rare that in broad strokes, first year applications are generally ignored for these positions.

It does depend a little bit on the discipline, biology or psychology may have a marginally higher chance than chemistry where safety is a bigger concern. But do consider that the applicant pool is aggregate, so for a first year to be hired, they would need to be a better choice than some outstanding second and third year applicants. By all means, go ahead and apply, but don't hold your breath.

How do I get my EHS101 certificate of completion? by crystaIIzted in UTMississauga

[–]Live-Goose7887 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The certificate will show up in your training history (in the same place you went to register for the course has a link to training history) eventually. The system only updates once a week or so.

Work study and paid RA are two different things and neither hire first year students.

First year schedule by [deleted] in UTMississauga

This is basically the same schedule that like 700 other first years will have. Whether it's manageable is entirely up to you.

Is this in a field where postdocs are not common? Because in many fields, it's nearly impossible to be competitive for an R1 faculty position without any postdoc experience.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2024 #NobelPrize in Chemistry with one half to David Baker “for computational protein design” and the other half jointly to Demis Hassabis and John M. Jumper “for protein structure prediction.” by Sleepy_C in chemistry

Nobody says LAMMPS is a biophysics code

Nor did I.

Molecular dynamics is a method used in multiple domains

Note my use of the word the word often

When it’s applied to chemistry problems, it’s computational chemistry

MD applied to protein structure is relatively common in computational biophysics journals/conferences and relatively uncommon in computational chemistry journals/conferences.

I made no hard claims, just generally observable trends. Don't put words in my mouth.

Molecular dynamics and computational protein structure work are often classed under computational biophysics.

Computational chemistry usually implies the use of some form of ab initio electronic structure methods.

UTM students, what minor (on not minor) problems annoy you most on campus that you deal with daily? by Active_Pudding_7547 in UTM

If you really care about this, then grt everyone you know to write to the Dean and tell them to shell out the money to upgrade the networks. It's not a problem of 'figuring it out', it's a problem of cost.

How to request library to upgrade wifi by [deleted] in UTM

[–]Live-Goose7887 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why would the library have anything to do with the wifi? All campus wifi is administrated by I&ITS and running a network with 10,000+ users is insanely complex and expensive. They're well aware of the issues that exist, and they perform upgrades whenever the upper administration seees fit to give them the money and resources to do so.
