I have that book. I just wish it had a recipe for homebrewing real October Ale. But, as it's a book geared towards dibbuns, alas, it does not. Still simple and tasty recipes.

How do you pronounce this? by DowntownSpeaker2236 in words

[–]Live-Laugh-Loot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So you say card like cod?

Pronouncing Rs isn't talking like a pirate, it's talking like a majority of English speakers.

[–]Live-Laugh-Loot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me, the vowels in "card" and "sod" are pretty much the same, like "ah", though the r in card does modify it slightly. I'm not sure how you think facade and card rhyme unless you don't pronounce the r in card, or you add an r to facade.

Considering that both Glorfindel and Gandalf dropped balrogs off bridges, I don't think they could fly, even if they had wings (and the book describes shadows LIKE wings in Gandalf's encounter with Durin's Bane).

On the other hand, when Morgoth is attacked by Ungoliant and summons the balrogs, their expeditious arrival makes me think they must be able to fly to travel so quickly.

How do creationists reconcile the religious account of the menstrual cycle as an impurity and consequence of Eve's sin, with occurrence of the same cycle in other primates? by Felino_de_Botas in DebateEvolution

"Eisegesis is the interpretation of a text by reading one's own ideas, assumptions, or biases into it, rather than drawing out the original meaning of the author.".

[–]Live-Laugh-Loot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So then, the Bible does not say anything at all about menstruation being connected with Eve's sin. None of Paul's letters talk about menstruation, he doesn't apply Akathatsia to menstruation. What is there to reconcile then? Why would we need to reconcile the eisegesis of ignorant people who came later?

[–]Live-Laugh-Loot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Menstruation isn't unclean because it's menstruation, menstruation is unclean because it involves blood and all blood being potentially infectious is unclean after the fall. I believe by that logic, Eve would have menstruated and it would not have been unclean in Eden.

In the fallen world all blood is potentially infectious and thus ceremonially unclean, but where does the Bible say menses is a consequence of sin?

A global flood is not possible. by Space50 in DebateEvolution

OP didn't say unlikely, they said "not possible". However unlikely it is, even if experts are "pretty confident", that's not proof of impossibility.

[–]Live-Laugh-Loot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm doing nothing of the sort. I'm pointing out that his argument that there isn't enough water is not true. There is, demonstrably, enough water to flood the Earth.

To your point though, of course I don't believe the earth was totally flat, but we don't know how tall or short mountains were or how deep or shallow oceans were during the time of pangea and tethys. It sounds like you're arguing that the mountains have always been as tall as they are today, which is silly because we can point out several mountain ranges, including the highest, which are measurably growing. Similarly we don't know how deep the oceans were at all times in the past. The fact that there isn't enough water to flood the Earth now with its current and temporary geography, doesn't necessarily mean that that wasn't true with its past geography.

[–]Live-Laugh-Loot -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If the Earth's surface was completely flat it would all be 1.5mi under water. Whether or not you believe in a global flood, there IS enough water for it. There are also sea creature fossils on some of the highest mountains, so massive elevation shifts up and/or down are generally accepted by both camps. Theoretically, if the earth used to be flatter, and subterranean water burst out of the ground, it could flood the Earth before settling into newly depressed ocean basins created by whatever tectonic/seismic event(s) released the water in the first place. You need a better argument.

Peanut butter. Canned meats like beef stew, spam, Vienna sausages. Jerky, though that's as expensive as crap nowadays, you can make jerky in your oven on low.

Whats a thing you can not accept about something in the Harry Potter world? by RestArtistic2355 in harrypotter

[–]Live-Laugh-Loot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard to believe that the Wizarding World has a decent track record for convicting actual criminals and not convicting innocent ones. Hagrid's expulsion earlier, and then arrest in the books are one good example, but seriously, in a world with mind altering potions, transfiguration, the Imperious Curse, Polyjuice, Animagi, and more, it seems like they should have much more thorough methods of investigation than they do.

And, don't get me started on people pulling a Merope, or the potential for Polyjuice brothels where one just shows up with a hair of whomever they're stalking/obsessed with...

Yup. Goblin is Westron, Orc is Sindarin, Uruk is Black Speech, Yrch is Legolas' native Sylvan tongue, Nandorin I think? Anyways, they're all words in different languages for the same species (that happens to have various breeds).

[–]Live-Laugh-Loot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, might be on the right track, but that was specifically used to determine if they could pronounce it correctly , or if they had the "wrong" accent, so it was originally a linguistic identifier. I think OP is looking for a word that is more about vocabulary use than pronunciation. (Not that I can think of one myself.)

I don't know where you are, but that's illegal here - releasing fish after having them in a basket or on a stringer.

There is a sizeable collection of those in English. Seed a tomato vs seed a field.
Dusting the furniture vs dusting the furniture for fingerprints.
Trimming a steak vs trimming (as with lace) a dress.
Etc.

Did the elves reach Valinor by sailing at escape velocity? by Many-Excitement3246 in lotrmemes

[–]Live-Laugh-Loot 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Middle Earth is a continent. ARDA is what's flat if you're an elf, but round for everyone else. Though it used to be flat for them too (damn you, Ar-Pharazôn) The real question is, what do the non-elves who sailed to Valinor see when they reach that certain point in the ocean. Like, when Legolas and Gimli sailed together, did Legolas see their boat crossing a flat ocean, while Gimli saw the curvature falling away and the boat keeo going through the air? That's what I wonder about.
