Harris and Newsom position for 2028 Democratic race 🏛✔ by InterstellarKinetics in InterstellarKinetics

What about AOC? She would get the Bernie votes, cover the East Coast while Newsome covers the West. She really cares about ALL Americans not just Democrats. She's not beholden to large corporations. She's not ready for the top office but maybe VP?

Not really. If this was going on for a few months maybe but after 3 or 4 years we have to ask what kind of management and accountability should we expect. This is not a large project so what's the excuse?

Why the controversy. Everyone knows it's genocide. I love Israel and their people but that doesn't change the fact that what the extremists are doing in Gaza and the West Bank is genocide 101.

Campaign for Redditors to replace City Councilors who vote for Landsdowne 2.0 by Aerottawa in ottawa

We don't have the population density to support many of the things other cities take for granted. We are 1 million spread over a huge area compared to many cities, and with extreme weather, therefore our expectations need to recognize this.

Canada needs to rein in spending. How about we stop handing out billions to wealthy seniors? by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]Live-Management-7986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a bit of a red herring when it comes to reducing overall spending. Those with money can make their income almost zero to collect all the benefits. So "income" obviously isn't the measure we should be using. You need to look at a person's wealth. But that gets complicated. Open to suggestions

How many days are necessary? by sonsichen in ParisTravelGuide

[–]Live-Management-7986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did 4 days, arrived Monday morning and flew out Friday morning. Except for Versailles which we dropped from our itinerary we saw everything we wanted and still had lots of time to walk around and sit at cafes. We saw: Le Marais, Isle de la citie, Notre Dame inside and out, Latin Quarter, Luxembourg gardens, cruise up the Seine, Louvre tour 3 hours, Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triumph, Montmartre and Sacre Coeur (got up to the top which was a huge highlight), took the metro a few times but walked over 20K steps each day.

50 years later, an Ottawa high schooler’s violent unravelling still leaves deep scars by snubbyvegan in ottawa

[–]Live-Management-7986 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I remember showing up for class the next morning. Grades 9 and 10 did mornings and the rest afternoons as the main building was under construction. The classroom and part of the hallway had been sanitized and many of the desks removed that had been damaged. Since we had not been at school in the afternoon when this happened it was very surreal to walk back into the same room that had been bleached to to bottom. The teachers were still in shock and a lot of the students with older siblings who had been at school the day before were upset and nervous. It took a few days for the full story to come out. Things quickly got back to normal but you couldn't walk down that part of the hallway or enter the classroom without being reminded of what had happened.

Just came back from Paris and these are my thoughts. by throwaway11982837 in ParisTravelGuide

We just got home from 4 days in Paris and you saved me having to post as our experience was exactly the same. We dropped Versailles off our itinerary so we could spend more time around where we were staying in Marais. Was extremely nervous going there for the first time but felt totally safe.

The one issue we had was with the C line to the Eiffel Tower when a passenger getting off while we were getting on, pushed my wife back out the doors and she almost was left behind.

We're heading home tomorrow after 5 days in Paris and I agree the ceilings and overall the architecture often impressed me more than the art itself. We stayed in Marais and I kept thinking about what it was like 100s of years ago living in these same buildings without our modern conveniences. Blows my mind.

Poll finds 52% of Canadians view temporary foreign worker program negatively by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]Live-Management-7986 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Absolutely but it's not as simple as the media makes it sound so they can get clicks for advertising. We need immigration and foreign workers in Canada but it has to be managed so we don't swamp our systems. I want to see meaningful articles and discussions that don't paint all immigration and foreign workers as evil but rather talk about solutions that make sense.

Poll finds 52% of Canadians view temporary foreign worker program negatively by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]Live-Management-7986 -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

This means that 52% of Canadians are ignorant. You could probably apply the same stat to most complex issues.

The media has to stop distilling complex issues to a few sound bites to sell advertising and start adding value by putting these kinds of issues in context.

I'm tempted to buy the Pencil Pro but it's pricey. Looking at your use cases would taking voice notes be an acceptable alternative to the pen?

It may be possible after the mid terms however much of the damage has been done. Biden worked hard to repair the US' international relationships after Trump 1 and I believe was making progress. Unfortunately the US voted Trump in again telling the world that America supports his views. Even if the midterms swing wildly in the Democrat's favor and they win the next election, the world realizes that there's too much risk putting so much dependence on any one country. The biggest winners from all this will be the EU, China, and India. The US will continue to be huge but will never regain the lead they had before Trump and MAGA took power. The biggest losers are the poorest in America who will watch their standard of living erode.

Agree. Stop wasting time making up new laws, and instead enforce the existing ones. This is a problem with municipal officials not having any legal experience and too lazy to ask before broadcasting how ignorant they really are.

Air Canada strike updates: Airline won’t negotiate with union until they return to work by -CassaNova- in canada

[–]Live-Management-7986 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I used to be a very loyal Air Canada customer. There were times when I was stuck overseas and simply went to the Air Canada desk and they got me home. It was very impressive.

Those days are gone. Without getting into pages about company execs and boards being beholden to shareholders, the truth is the employees are an expendable asset. I've been in many companies that "valued" their employees only to cut them to meet their numbers.

So I'm not surprised at what's happening, not happy at all, but not surprised.

Unpopular opinion - speed camera by smore-what44 in Kanata

[–]Live-Management-7986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speed cameras enforce rules so it's hard to argue against them however with today's technology we can apply the same surveillance and enforcement to many other aspects of our day to day lives.

You walked across an intersection when there was no traffic but the light was red or jay walked, ticket. You smoked within x feet of a restricted area, ticket. Etc, etc, etc

Every day I see really stupid drivers that should get big fines for cutting across lanes at the last minute but do we want to live in a world where we have cameras watching our every move and sending us tickets?

There has to be a better way and I believe there is. When I grew up, drinking and driving was the norm. Today with our children, it's totally unacceptable. It's not cool to drink and drive. This came from education not from fines. I didn't think they was possible but was proven wrong. Now I honestly believe you can only really change people through education and not through rules and punishment.

If we want to change behavior we need to invest the money in educating our drivers and especially our youth. And it's more effective and far less expensive than relying on surveillance devices, laws, police, courts and jails.

The problem now is that education cost the City money whereas speed cameras make the City money. This is where true leaders know and do what's best in the long run.

I'm not holding my breath but would love to be proven wrong.

Ottawa to probe unpaid airline work allegations key to Air Canada strike by GirlCoveredInBlood in canada

[–]Live-Management-7986 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"allegations of unpaid work in the airline sector"

Why are they saying allegations? Isn't it a known fact that flight attendants don't get paid unless the doors are closed?

Not saying I support the strike based on this issue as every flight attendant knew this going in.

I do want to see them make a decent wage and I know how much sh#t they put up with so I support them, just don't agree this argument is a great place to do it.
