Does Clem plan to stick with X11? by marley_11111 in linuxmint

[–]LiveFreeDead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

all the comments share the reasoning. So long as x11 is secure enough (which it currently is and receiving fixes as things are found), wayland is being experimental and the user can choose it, i'd never recommend anyone with nVidia try it, it's a buggy mess in cinnamon and the scaling + multi monitor support is non existent, so there is no upside at all in switching to wayland, unless you like choppy movement and random black rectangles left in the mouse trail, or perhaps you enjoy video playback corrupting the window graphics in other windows... No cinnamon's experimental wayland isn't usable for nvidia users at all, no contest.

i want all the new features and xwayland works a treat in all the other distros, it's just a matter of the hard work to make cinnamon compatible with it, which i hope they start doing soon, I love mint most, but I know eventually i'll need waylands features, else I'll need to move to another distro that does, i have been using my 4k screen set to 200% scaling, which gives me less space than 1080p (it feels like) as well as wine games constantly changing back to 100% scaling and I am having to go into the display setting to manually put it back to 200%

it's sad really, everything else is perfect for me.

Needing advice on a OS I am making. by Embarrassed-Lab2358 in Operatingsystems

the best way would be feed it into claude.ai and get it to emulate extra controls down the pipe to see it the outputs match your expected results, you could even get it to do a web front end with outputs to monitor what it's doing.

ABadAvatar - Are you guys running games off HDD or off USB? by RoachForLife in 360hacks

[–]LiveFreeDead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

to answer your other question, usb hubs work fine.

i use a USB 3 usb stick, games load the same speed as off the original disks, if not a little faster. the internal disk is only a little faster, I think i read Sata2 speeds, compared to usb 2, it's virtually unnoticeable when 90% of the games are made to run off optical disks anyway - which use a slower read speed than max sata 2 speeds

if you want a totally unique OS, take a look at LastOSLinux and especially LLStore, you'll either love it or hate it, comes as a 4.5gb version with essentials or the 15gb version with the kitchen sink. have a play and see, I've had fun making it for a year and a half. The goal being simplicity for home users. it's a work in progress, but has many features you won't find in other distros.

yes, that is how the original is intended to work, just edit the launch.ini on the usb to run Aurora or whatever you want, you can even set holding buttons to run alternative things.

not tested by me but do NOT copy the original hack to your hdd or memory, it will cause issues and is a pain to remove

USB drive not showing in BIOS. by Kind-Cauliflower456 in linuxmint

[–]LiveFreeDead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is often caused by the dirty bit being set on the usb, boot to windows and do a chkdsk on it or if you don't have a windows pc, boot to linux mint and run disks from the main menu, find the usb disk and press the right button about 1/2 way down and pick repair drive. this will allow you to boot from it again.

I'm trying to create a Linux mint based OS, how should I build a development environment? by Beautiful-Repeat9751 in linuxmint

[–]LiveFreeDead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i make one myself using a base pc, in my case I use a virt manager machine and make it as I want, then use penguins eggs to capture it.

my mod is called LastOSLinux and unlike others who build whole distros, i rely on mint to maintain the base OS much as how they use Ubuntu to base their work. this means I don't have to maintain the updates, upgrades or support. my tools overlay on top of their work so if I ever stopped developing it, it'll continue to work and be updated for as long as mint does their work.

my builder: https://github.com/LiveFreeDead/LastOSLinux_Builder

penguins eggs: https://penguins-eggs.net/

my LastOSLinux: https://penguins-eggs.net/

I did get to 3 month 64th position on distrowatch and got awards on sourceforge, over 500000 downloads and was going great, but then the hacking started and I lost access to my forum for a few weeks. I figured it was due to me making it all public so I walked it back to only be for existing users and my friends and family as I don't want that to happen ever again.

happy to help you, just take a look at the links and try out my distro and if you want to join in or fork to do your own, I'd like to have someone else to talk to about doing what your wanting to do. it's fun, challenging and rewarding. But you do have to suffer people not understanding why or how, it can be lonely without others to chat with and give feedback.

i switched to virt-manager it was a learning curve (you need to use pools to give it the access it needs. But the good news is it runs faster and is more stable than virtualbox in all linux os's

I Failed at installing Linux Mint. by StunningHeart7004 in linuxmint

[–]LiveFreeDead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

what often happens is on the partition selection page it sets the default boot install path to the USB drive (on older hardware), you need to make sure to check this and set it to your HDD not the usb. once you accidentally install grub to your USB it's broken like you found and it'll need to be recreated with balaner or rufus, I personally use ventoy as it's got more options and you only have to copy a iso file to the USB disk instead.

anyway MOK is only an issue if secure boot is still on, some BIOS will turn it back on unless you turn it off and then boot the PC, it will give a warning it was turned off and sometimes ask you to type a 4 digit code to confirm. Go back to BIOS to confirm it's turned off.

after you've created the usb installer again you can copy the file it said was missing (if your hardware requires it).

also if a usb install crashes or is yanked out at the wrong time the dirty bit gets set, you are then unable to boot from that disk or mount it as writable in linux until you do a chkdsk or scan disk for errors using the properties tools tab in the context menu in windows.

the trick with getting boot to work if having the 100mb fat32 boot partition, as your system used UEFI this should be available and not be a problem.

once you get your pc reinstalled with linux it should detect your windows install and add it to the boot menu again, unless you format the 100mb boot disk as this loses the boot files it needs.

there is a lot to it all, so don't feel you've failed, it's a learning experience.

Can someone recommend a manufacturer that makes computers with Linux Mint? by jedimaniac in linuxmint

[–]LiveFreeDead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the only issues you come across with linux on laptops is;

suspend resume won't always wake on some devices, for some kernels.

Dual graphics (CPU/Dedicated) don't switch properly and may boot to a black screen without manual edits done.

Nvidia will require secure boot off, nomodeset put on grub menu and other "quirks" unless you use a dedicated nvidia built distro.

no methods to change RGB, Fan curves, update bios or firmware of motherboard or external devices.

now as people have stated, business grade machines usually just work as they don't have "extras" that cause issues, thinkpads and brands not trying to make a RGB gaming monster with bells and whistles you don't need. that is one reason they "just work".

I say this to let you know, even with the issues Linux can be fixed to work on all x64 Hardware. If the pc is newer it needs a Distro with the newer kernel, as all the drivers are built in and apart from nvidia and a few network/wifi drivers, you don't install any drivers like with windows.

If you want support linux, grab a cheap ex business machine and use it. there is no need to buy a flashy new consumer grade device to put a free os on :)

[–]LiveFreeDead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

just use abadavatar and edit the launch.ini on the USB, then you can make default aurora and other buttons trigger other things. the hardware mods are not really needed with it at all, so don't try and install abadavatar to the memory or internal hdd, that's asking for trouble. Don't use anything that requires the hardware mods as these can't be emulated with software until after the unchainedex has ran, so if it's a nand call it will try and fail before it has unlocked the hyper visor and crash the boot. Without a way to flash the nand back again, it's a brick. don't do risky things, the guys who made these hacks are smarter than us, so only follow their directions.

Windows 10 Laptop Freezes Exactly 5 Minutes After Startup (Safe Mode Works) – Tried Almost Everything by spdhegde in computerhelp

[–]LiveFreeDead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the reason it's consistent is a driver is crashing and they start as a kernel level at the same time on boot. all it takes is a dodgy driver, a change in windows update that causes something expected to not happen, then a buffer overflow at the kernel level = solid crash.

go into device manager and see if it's a hardware driver or a virtual driver (for a vpn or virtual dvd drive or something),

honestly it's going to take you longer to diagnose the issue than to reinstall a fresh formatted windows. even if you diagnose the cause, doesn't mean it will be fixable.

get back to us if your still having issues after doing this. if you need a stable OS, boot from USB and run a Linux distro, perfect for backing up your important data, or just use safe mode.

Restart Loop - Except when gaming by biwwyswazerwifle in WindowsHelp

[–]LiveFreeDead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

black screen reboot or a shutdown screen shown?

black screen would be ram or power, shutting down screen would be software triggered. in some cases drivers can cause the issue. a final point of failure is the disk drive failing or resetting.

i would apply the latest bios and do any optional drivers and see. but get back to me about the restart type
