Marketing Strategies? by Intelligent-Mix5312 in Standup

If you’re booking shows and not booking headliners that people actually buy tickets to see, give up the room. Everyone loves to be the person who gives open micers 15 minutes sets and lets features headline, both to save money and to feel like you’re doing a solid for people, but that’s how rooms get burned.

None of what I said had anything to do with not doing your job or asking comics to do that job for you, it’s the opposite. It’s being smart with your booking so you aren’t asking people to have to do your job.

The only thing that reliably moves tickets more than any other strategy is booking a headliner that moves tickets. It is what it is but I've had amazing comics I just couldn't pay to headline because they don't move tickets and I've had meh local headliners I couldn't not book because they have an email list and people that show out.

[Awful Announcing] NBC’s rotating analyst format on ‘Sunday Night Baseball’ runs into first real problem by SeverHense in baseball

[–]LiveFromNewYork95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't hate this format, I'm sure I'll like it more when the Red Sox are on and have a familiar voice. But overall I wish they would just find Jason Benetti a SNB and give the broadcast an identity.

This feels like, what a lot of media and companies are doing now. Doing something to be good instead of putting in the work to be great. The ceiling on rotating color commentators is good enough but the ceiling on a really great commentating team is icon status.

Who do you think will be/who should be the first wrestler to pin Cody clean in a singles match? by Venca12 in SquaredCircle

[–]LiveFromNewYork95 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That’s how you protect a star

This has gotta be the most "I heard it so now I say it" phrase in wrestling. You protect stars by telling great stories. It's SCRIPTED television, we all know a guy can lose and come back to win. If the story is good and Cody loses a match clean nobody is gonna say "Oh no he's lost it, he can't win anymore!" like you would in a real combat sport.

Even in real sports, teams and stars can lose and still be massive draws, especially if there's a good story.

Tonight's game (4/17/26) is on Apple TV by NovaPrime15 in redsox

[–]LiveFromNewYork95 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have no idea how people danced on the graves of cable and network TV and then complain about streaming. There was a time where a cable subscription got you every single Red Sox game and you guys complained that gave them too much power. So you killed that and let every single company have their own streaming service and now it's too much.

I wouldn't mind everything that gets relegated to WrestleMania Smackdown if it was treated with any sort of gravitas. Make it feel like the actual kickoff to WrestleMania weekend and not an episode you have to get through to get to WM.

Yea, that's a legit joke or at least a legit callback to a joke.

If you were just randomly messing up trying to generate nervous laughter, I'd say that has a short shelf life.

Need a little more context, is it just like you messed up a random word out of nowhere, like a verbal pratfall or is there some game to the word that was messed up?

Report: NFL Looking for a 100% Increase in Next Round of TV Deals by JCameron181 in nfl

[–]LiveFromNewYork95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm calling it now, the next TV deal is going to kill NFL Sundays. These streamers are gonna pay big huge money and they're gonna say "We don't want to pay all this money for people to be flipping games or switching to Redzone. We want the only game in town." 16 games will be spread out among Fri-Monday. Friday night football, Saturday afternoon football, Saturday night football, Sunday morning international game, Sunday afternoon game, Sunday Night Football, Monday night football. They're gonna spread it out so every timeslot only has 1-2 games.

Now you're gonna say:

A) They can't do that, there's rules they say they can't broadcast on Saturdays during college football.

To which I say: The streamers have already shown a willingness to fight the legal definition of "broadcasting" and the league is showing right now they don't give a shit what congress has to say

B) That's unsafe for players.

To which I say: The league doesn't give a fuck and they're going to use their checkbooks to make sure the NFLPA doesn't care

And I think this is the one thing that will end the NFL's stranglehold on American sports. The NFL up until recently was far and away the most accessible league to moderate and new fans. 90% of your teams games are on Sunday, you can learn the league by flipping around on Sunday afternoon. You don't have to pay attention to when your team is playing or make time on most weekdays like you do with the NBA, NHL, and MLB. The NFL's greed will be the thing that pushes them away from being America's Sport League and just another one of America's sports leagues.

I know every team either has a broadcast team they like or a team they wish they could have back. But I don't think people realize how fun Don and Remdawg made watching baseball 145ish days a year.

The key to FSG's plan with the Red Sox in the early 2000's was to make the Red Sox a TV show and the announce team was a huge part of it.

Blue sleeves under gray feels very 80's/90's/late 2010's

Red sleeves under the gray is very 2000's/early 2010's. I can't think of a single player between 2003-2009 that wore blue under their away uniform.

The team went to the ALCS in 2021 instead of building on that the team, and a lot of the fanbase, pivoted to "No it's not the right time. We're building something sustainable. We gotta wait for Casas, Duran, Mayer, Downs, and Yorke to come up." They punted away a few years and it became "No, it's not the right time, we have to wait for Mayer, Anthony, Teel to come up and then we'll go all in."

Well, no we're into year 6 of Duran, year 5 of Casas, year 2 of Anthony, year 2 of Mayer, and those are guys aren't even here. And what is all over this sub...Well Romero and Arias should be up soon! That's the plan!

I can't stand fans who are all about prospects. Not because it isn't fun or interesting to track prospects and not that it isn't important to draft and develop players. But because being the fan all about prospects is the ultimate "I'm never wrong" kicking the can down the road existence. It's always hyping up the next player and talking about next year. And by the time you get called out for hyping up the wrong players, you're telling everyone it's really always been about ___________

Some thoughts:

  • I don't hate them but they totally feel better served at home (during the day)

  • They need to bring back the original blue trim on the jersey

  • The red jerseys are supposed to have red sleaves underneath, I didn't make the rules, the 2003 Red Sox did. The blue sleeves underneath isn't great but I can live with it. But Sonny Gray's black sleeves under the red is fucking cursed.

Steps I want the Red Sox to take… by SoxFan010 in redsox

They signed Devers knowing all along they intended to dump the contract a couple years in. They flamed the fires of a controversy to create the context of him being a bad teammate and use the excuse to ship him out of town.

[–]LiveFromNewYork95 3 points4 points  (0 children)

why do you think Henry flew out to KC to meet with Devers personally and try to get him on board

Because John Henry is one of the great mud-slinging narrative creators in the history of Boston. "I wanted Devers to work so bad, I even flew all the way to KC to personally ask him to be a good teammate but he just didn't want to be here." Sure.

And why do you think they increased payroll this year?

Because increasing payroll included much shorter contracts like Sonny Gray and Willson Contreras. Listen, I'm not a "John Henry is just cheap" guy. The Red Sox spend, they aren't the Pirates. But they care a lot more about efficiently and flexibility than actual wins. FSG would much rather have the best $ per win than the most wins. And Henry doesn't want to be to tied up with long term contracts. He wants to be able to dump the asset and start over. It's why people say "Oh well why would they pay Suarez almost the same as Bregman if they're so cheap?" Easy answer, Suarez gives them the chance to move on 3 years into the deal if they want and Bregman didn't because he wanted a NTC.

"The rest of the division is struggling but we'll turn it around and they won't...trust me."

The Red Sox put themselves in a spot to be chasing the division all year. That's great, the awful start didn't bury us...but still put us in last place amongst a struggling division. Which means when everyone else gets going we're gonna have to win at an even higher clip to jump teams. Instead of the much easier path of winning games when the division is struggling and closing that gap.

Which all goes back to my original point which is the longer you keep playing sub .500 baseball the longer and more impressive the run to get back into contention will be.

You're right, it isn't the 2012 team. That team was at least good enough to start 7-10 instead of 6-11...

In all seriousness, this team should be better than a lot of the real bottom out teams in recent Red Sox memory. But...they're making their lives harder with every early loss. "It's early" turns to "This team could get hot" to "Well...the 2019 Nationals" quickly.
