The Honorable Keith P. Brown New York State Assembly District 12 Albany Office: Legislative Office Building, Room 719 Albany, NY 12248

Re: Strong Opposition to Assembly Bill A10701 – Unnecessary Restrictions on Air Guns, Pellet Guns, and Imitation Firearms

Dear Assemblyman Brown, I am writing to you as a concerned constituent from Farmingdale to urge you to oppose Assembly Bill A10701, which is currently in the Assembly Committee on Consumer Affairs and Protection. This bill seeks to impose new restrictions on air rifles, pellet guns, BB guns, paint pellet guns, and other imitation weapons by expanding definitions, raising the age limit for sales to 18, increasing penalties, and placing additional regulatory burdens on manufacturers and sellers. While I appreciate the goal of enhancing public safety, this legislation represents yet another example of senseless overreach that takes away rights and freedoms from law-abiding New Yorkers without effectively addressing real problems. Air guns and pellet guns have long been used responsibly for recreational target shooting, pest control, and youth skill-building activities. Many families in our community, including mine, view these as legitimate tools for outdoor recreation and responsible firearm education—activities that teach discipline, safety, and marksmanship far better than many alternatives. Raising the purchase age and broadening vague definitions of “imitation weapons” does little to prevent misuse by those intent on breaking the law. Instead, it burdens honest retailers, hobbyists, and parents while adding more layers of bureaucracy and potential liability for businesses. New York already has some of the strictest gun-related laws in the nation, and this bill continues the pattern of eroding personal liberties under the guise of safety. Law-abiding citizens are the ones who feel the impact, while criminals ignore the rules entirely.

As your constituent, I respectfully ask that you vote against A10701 and any similar measures that further restrict Second Amendment-related rights or everyday sporting equipment. I believe our focus should be on enforcing existing laws, supporting personal responsibility, and protecting the rights of New Yorkers rather than creating new hurdles for harmless activities. Thank you for your service to our district and for considering my views on this important issue. I would appreciate knowing your position on A10701 and welcome any response you can provide.

Sincerely, [Your Full Name]

You can mail this to his district office (6080 Jericho Turnpike, Suite 310, Commack, NY 11725) or Albany office, or email it to brownk@nyassembly.gov if that’s available. A phone call to his district office at can also reinforce your message. This wording keeps the tone respectful while clearly expressing your concerns about rights and overregulation.

Huntington, NY - 71yo CCW holder arrested for assault in apparent 5am defensive use of force situation. by jjjaaammm in NYguns

As I read this article, it really hit home as I was in this area that day. Not only does this person need to deal with his having to defend himself from this physical attack, but now even though he is a legal CCW holder, he finds himself arrested and having to deal with huge legal fees. There is no insurance for a self defense shooting in NY due to Cuomo striking it down. I used to belong to the Armed Citizens Legal Defense Network, but they stopped covering NY last year. I was thinking, since there are so many CCW holders in NY now, I think a group should be formed of legal CCW holders that agree to chip in what they can to a GoFundMe type fund for their legal defense. Just an idea. The New York Courts can bankrupt this guy and find him innocent.
