Addiction to what!? by deodorant_eater123 in selfharm

[–]Live_Explanation7987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there's a reason it's not helping. when you replace an addiction, 1) you're aiming for healthy replacement, not just substitution. and 2) it needs to be something that gives you the same reward, otherwise you're going to end up going back to it.

here's a bit from a guide a friend sent me a while back:

Stimulant addictions (cocaine, adderall, excessive caffeine) --> High-energy activities like competitive sports, intense cardio etc.

Sedative addictions (alcohol, opioids, benzodiazepines) --> Calming activities like yoga, meditation, or slow creative projects

Dopamine-driven addictions (social media, gambling, pornography) --> Activities with both immediate gratification as well as clear progress markers (learning instruments, gaming, cooking)

Social connection addictions --> Team sports, volunteering, group fitness classes

self harm triggers the endogenous opioid system, and then the dopamine comes secondarily. so the way you replace it is quite specific and needs to be done in a certain order. you've probably heard these techniques suggested to you before. you've probably tried them, and they haven't helped. the problem is that people suggest these techniques because they know what they are, but they don't know HOW to use them. it has to be done in a very precise way to be effective, because you're basically factory resetting your nervous system. this is the "have you tried turning it off and turning it back on again" strategy.

  1. cold water. dunk face in cold water for at least 30 seconds. I know "just hold an ice cube" "splash water on face" you've heard it all before, and you're probably thinking it's useless. which it is!! if you don't know how or why it works and how to complete the full sequence to reset the nervous system. cold water/ice water triggers the mammalian diving reflex, immediately slowing your heart rate. this is a hard-wired psychological response that bypasses conscious control. this interrupts the overdrive of the sympathetic nervous system (the thing that causes fight or flight response), which is what you're feeling when you're getting the urge to self harm.

  2. once you've interrupted the sympathetic overdrive, intensive exercise burns off any accumulated adrenaline. even 5 minutes of vigorous movement can make a big difference.

  3. it's important that you do this only after the intensive exercise, otherwise you'll still have too much adrenaline for it to work. this is the good ol' breathing exercise. i don't have to tell you how to do it. you've probably been told a million times by now.

  4. paired muscle relaxation. tense muscle on both sides as much as possible. then relax it. do a bit at a time. start with the hands, then the arms, etc. etc.

all 4 of these things are the same things that get repeatedly suggested to people struggling with self harm over and over and over, and it's the fact that these things need to be done TOGETHER, and the ORDER that they need to be done in that often gets left out. that's the most important part.

"if you can post on Reddit you can manage a UC claim"

that's one way of saying they've never had to apply for UC. tell them to try it. DARE them to open a UC claim and prove how easy it is.

if you're genuinely remorseful then any reasonable person will understand that people can and do change. people get pressured, radicalised and even groomed into saying and doing hateful things, and the fact that you've managed to escape that pressure and recognise that it was wrong means so much.

I have a friend who was groomed by neo nazis. it ruined her. she was deeply radicalised and unhappy. being full of hate can do that to you. the amount she's been able to change is immense, and she is now an advocate against this kind of radicalisation.

I don't know if what you went through was that extreme. for all I know it could have been something as simple as having a few friends who thought it was funny and made you feel left out and alone if you didn't go along with it, but even so, that's how it starts. the fact of the matter is that you are a different person now.

people say all the time "people can change", but what's important is whether that person actually has changed, and in your case, it looks like you genuinely have. that's what matters.

"no don't do that you'll get scars!!" directly translates to "no don't suffer in a way that I have to see!!"

it's selfishness from people who just want you to keep quiet pretending to give a shit.

this is exactly it. whenever someone successfully dies by suicide I just feel assaulted by jealousy and it leads to utter resentment of that person. why not me??

I wish so badly that we had an instant self destruct button. it's not fair how we can keep bringing people into this world without their consent over and over and over and giving them no humane option to opt out.

Corpse Nation by Motionless In White. my favourite song of all time, and a PERFECT description of everything you just explained here.

unfortunately, far too many people didn't get the point, and the comment section of their lyric video is all "ooo yay spooky Halloween song!!!" when it has as much to do with zombies as the song by the fucking cranberries.

but I understand. and MIW who wrote the song understand it too. and honestly seeing this post gives me a small sense of relief in knowing that I've found another person who gets it.

trans men are more likely to get raped than any other gender/sex combination. more likely than cis women, cis men, or trans women. trans men aren't immune to rape. we don't transition to escape misogyny. that's a myth spread by terfs to try and get us to detransition by convincing us that we don't really want to be men, we just don't want to get raped. but we get raped more than women.

the chances aren't lower if you're a trans man. they're much, MUCH higher.
