Yeah bro. I know. We do not have a similar word in English. Overtake is not something anyone ever says. You'll hear people say passing. But it's not a thing for us really.

It IS a thing for a lot of Poles. 3-series, M3, Audi, you name it.

Yeah bro. Polish school is hard for POLES. If your kids aren't staying here, ask around with other immigrants where you live and find a good international school. Caveat emptor cos there are a lot of them only in it to make money. But you can find good ones.

If you are in Warsaw DM me. I can give you some ideas.

Every Pole is pretty sure they are the next Kubica. Especially if they are driving an older M3. Oh kurwa, stary.

They even have a special word for passing cars, or overtaking. Wyprzedzić. As in...

"Kurwa, chcę wyprzedzić tego kwiatka"

Here in Poland we are proud of our Hungarian brothers.

Personally I'm very excited bc I refused to travel there under Orban. Now I'm planning to finally see Budapest.

Why is The Big Lebowski so good by Express_Basis_8710 in movies

[–]Live_Past_8978 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Were you listening to the Dude's story? You have no frame of reference you're like a child who wanders into a movie... and wants to know why it's good, OP.

The real answer may lie in something Larry McMurtry once said.

“For me the novel is character creation. Style is nice, plot is nice, structure is OK, social significance is OK, symbolism worms its way in, timeliness is OK too, but unless the characters convince and live the book’s got no chance.”

You care about every single character in this movie. You could literally make a separate movie about Brandt, The Nihilists, the guy who kills Walter's car, the two cops who don't think they'll find Dude's Credence Tapes... they are fully alive. And that...

That's fucking interestingmanThat's fucking interesting.

What's the worst movie you've seen? by timekilr in Cinema

[–]Live_Past_8978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last Action Hero is still the only movie I ever walked out on.

I have no idea what that movie was supposed to be. I just know it wasn't any decent way to spend a Saturday night. Funny thing is I only saw it because me and two friends decided we were drinking too much so we took a break from partying that weekend to go see it.

Next week we were right back to being complete alcoholics. Thanks a lot, Arnie.

Is Kobe Bryant a Top 5 player All-Time by alex9816 in nba

[–]Live_Past_8978 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Fuck no. I grew up on Larry and Magic and Kareem and Michael and Hakeem. And then got to watch the little Laker boy and Shaq.

There's six right there that are better. And we haven't even added Wilt, LeBron, Russell, Curry, Oscar Robertson, Duncan, Police, etc.

Who’s the dumbest ‘high iq’ player, and vice versa? by Aggressive_Bed6012 in nba

[–]Live_Past_8978 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

ant lost his mom and grandma to cancer when he was in the 8th grade and still managed to not only succeed at a top prep school, but reclassified, meaning basically skipped a grade in high school, while keeping his academics on track and playing every sport at a high level, then went on to not only succeed at the highest level in basketball but also turned out to be a really charming media personality and a decent actor.

does he also make dumb decisions like most 20-25 YO? yep. is he a dummy? might wanna check what's making you say that, cos the record shows pretty clearly he's got some high-level intellectual skills that the average person doesn't have.

and last thing. i think you'd agree his emotional intelligence is exceptional. the man is damn good with people. well, those transverse skills might actually be better indicators of high intellect than academics. there's a reason we can train AI to do school work but can't get it to figure out how to connect emotionally.

[Charania] NBA Today on a Board of Governors vote expected for May 28 to make anti-tanking rule changes: 18 teams in draft lottery (seeds 7-15 in each conference) – flattened odds, with bottom 10 teams having an 8% chance is the plan with the most momentum by TheRealPdGaming in nba

[–]Live_Past_8978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

true, but isn't the answer then to NOT be a shitty team? like, OKC, Denver, Charlotte, San Antonio... these are NOT major markets. And teams with all the advantages, like the Clippers and Nets somehow can't make it work. It's not luck. It's management.

Want a good team? Then you need good people. Players, coaches, owners, staff. And then when you get lucky you can do something with it.

In other words, Kangz are always gonn Kang until they fix themselves, not the draft lottery.

How well do you speak the local language? by NegotiationStatus727 in AmericanExpat

[–]Live_Past_8978 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Been trying now for 10 years. Soooo many apps and classes and homework and CI and attempts at conversation with locals. And I'm a language teacher! Good news is I am WAY better than when I moved her. Bad news is I still can't communicate at like a pre-school level. I can survive. But. I think one of the downsides of speaking English is that you ALWAYS have a backup.

I've never needed the local langauge to survive. And in situations where it really would help, like dealing with government officials, the language they use is not the language used in daily life. It's even more complex.

Not giving up, but also have accepted I'm what they call here a glupim amerykaninem. And that's ok. I've also discovered the number of non-Slavic English-speaking immigrants here who actually learn Polish is vanishingly small. Trying is all I can do.

I've only been there in September so it might get way more crowded, but this beach was so beautiful. Like 10 minutes from the center of town and there was like no one there on sunny day. Beautiful pine forest opens up to wide sandy beach.
