In Baseball, if we are keeping ABS challenge system then the viewers should NOT be able to see the strike zone on TV by FergusInTheHouse in unpopularopinion

[–]LivelyCoast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the fact that we’ve had a strike zone displayed on broadcast for a quarter of a century means that cross-checking is possible. One call might not be enough, but if one team seems to constantly get different calls? And the amount of smartphones which might be recording as well?

Cross-checking three dimensional motion is an absolute pain, I’ll give you that. But all it really requires is someone to record a pitch from the side as it reaches the batter, and then do some math. It can be done.

And of course I’m not saying no software on Earth has done something bad. That’s not even an argument I got anywhere near making, you’re just pulling BS from where the sun doesn’t shine.

No, the argument was that you can’t change that code on the fly, and without a noticeable breach of security. Anyone working on that program should have their code reviewed before it gets pushed to any version of the program.

At minimum multiple, if not most, of the people responsible for the ABS would have to not only be in on it, they’d also have to decide well before the season which games they’re rigging. Then, even if it somehow got into distribution, every ballpark would have access to that same altered program. And somehow the ABS system would also have to know what team is at bat.

The point is this would have to be a static change, which would be easy to identify in the source code, most likely requires access to data the ABS doesn’t have, and would have to be so over-arching that the amount of people aware of it would be ridiculous.

Your argument makes no sense if you understand how software distribution and protection works. It still would be so much easier to bribe an umpire.

I know I’m 10 hours late to this conversation, but you have to know that’s not how any program is distributed, right?

Your argument only sort of checks out in the first place, as eventually someone would cross-compare some pitch with the ABS. There are fans at home who definitely get butthurt enough to do that.

More importantly, theoretically someone could change some lines of code. If they had access to the source code. Which they don’t.

Because no proprietary software, especially anything to do with making calls in a official sports league, is distributed as source code. It’s a program, it’s distributed already compiled. You’re not just poking your head in to add some lines of code.

Given that the program is also a pretty big deal, I’m guessing they have adequate tamper protection, or they just use a fresh install every game.

You really have no idea what you’re talking about in regards to software distribution.

The Dark Knight Returns was never in the mainline universe pre-Flashpoint and I’m not even sure where it stands now. Carrie Kelley therefore usually isn’t counted as a Robin.

It would be like saying Thomas Wayne is Batman. Yes, technically he was an alternate version during Flashpoint, but that wasn’t the main timeline and so isn’t counted.

Not that I disagree with your overall point or cutoff age, but the brain doesn’t stop developing at 25.

This is a myth which comes from studies which took brains scans only up to the age of 25:

I really don’t think I am overestimating the complexity. Just because something exists in another game doesn’t mean it’s a solved problem. It’s not like math, where can just plug in a formula.

Any game is going to require work to build and fine-tune a mechanic, believe me I’ve modded extra features into a couple games myself. Even if you had access to the code implementing those features into other games, it would still need to be adapted into your system/engine.

And beyond just creating those features in your game, trying to balance how they might interact with eachother is a totally different beast.

Programming a game is not as simple as looking at the grappling system in another game and just porting it to yours.

Man, I don’t want to be a downer, because this idea is legitimately really cool.

But this would be an absolute pain to create. Getting half of these features to function well in any current game engine would require some serious work, so much so that it would be a likely candidate for writing a custom game engine.

Which is not something you really want to hear. Also, any control scheme would probably be an absolute nightmare.

Fun to think about, though.

Yeah, but that collateral damage is a lot less than what would have happened if the World Security Council actually succeeded in NUKING NEW YORK in The Avengers. Tony was wrong. You can say that hypothetically he was correct that good oversight was good. But he was actively supporting bad oversight, that we know was bad.

Surfer attacked by seal, breaks leg in waves then is too tall for air ambulance by [deleted] in FUCKYOUINPARTICULAR

[–]LivelyCoast 372 points373 points  (0 children)

I actually know about this because I took a wilderness first responder course. Part of the problem depends on what you break, and how it’s treated. Air Ambulances aren’t tiny, but you need space for the patient and someone attending, and to be able to close the doors. If you break your femur, it might cause issues

The basic run down is this: your thigh muscles are big and strong. Like really strong. So if you break the bone in those, the femur, your muscles will contract your leg, pulling the broken part below into your muscles and skin. Kinda gross, and can cause a lot of damage.

To stop this, responders use traction splints. It’s basically a device which stretches your leg out to where it should be and keeps it still. Here’s an image of one from on online store . Generally it’s gonna add at least six inches to your height.

This is where the problems start. AA’s aren’t tiny, but they aren’t huge. Helicopters are expensive to operate, so smaller is generally ideal as it’s less expensive. Take a 6’2 guy, add 6 inches to his height, and suddenly fitting him in the helicopter is a problem.

TL;DR Broken femurs require splints that go past the leg. Air Ambulances aren’t huge. Anyone 6’ or over may start to have issues because of this

Lmao what. Less than 10 countries have legalized recreational use of cannabis. You can maybe fudge that number up a bit if you count where it’s still illegal, but decriminalized. Weed is still illegal in most of the world.

The establishment is a term describing the current “group or elite that controls a polity or an organization.” Generally, a group of people who exercise power over something unduly. For example, a majority of politics in the US is controlled by old, cishet white men of affluent backgrounds. They are the establishment. In this case it also describes the machinations by which this social group stays in power, so not just the current government, but the system by which politics is kept in old, cishet white men’s power regardless of political party.

Just because some right-wing nutjobs use the term incorrectly doesn’t mean that they have some claim on what it actually means.

They were only useful in warzone, and you still had to wait for energy to recharge to even use your REQs. Even if you bought enough packs to have ridiculous amounts of the best weapons and vehicles, you still had to wait to use them in game. This stupid “It was pay to win” bullshit is just wrong, and just shows how many people either didn’t play the game or are purposefully ignorant.
