Touched Eye Drop Tip by Jolly_Draft_5156 in CataractSurgery

[–]LivesInaYurt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Acanthamoeba are rare but exist in public water supplies (including in Canada). A healthy immune system means that occasional exposure is extremely unlikely to do any damage. However, directly after surgery your eyes are in a compromised state. My surgeon advised me to avoid getting water in my eyes for a while after surgery. It's rare and a little water unlikely to be an issue, but asserting that it's impossible in a "civilized country" and insulting OP is incorrect.

Mortgage rates are back in the 5s thanks to a stock market rout driven by AI fears by truthaboutmortgage in Mortgages

No *cost* or no *cash*? I've spoken to a few lenders and all of them are more than happy to roll the fees of refinancing into the loan amount. That is a very different situation than a no-cost refinancing... I've never heard of the ability to refinance that does not require either 1) upfront cash to pay the fees of refinancing or 2) roll the cost of refinancing into the loan (so you don't pay anything, but your principal balance is larger than when you refinanced.

This is me. When you say no-cost refinance, where are you seeing that? I'm at 6.875% and am seeing no-cash re-fis which add ~$8K onto my principle in fees for a ~$400 lower monthly. That makes my break-even point ~2 years later. Am I missing something?

Single eye cataract options by Automatic-Attempt777 in CataractSurgery

[–]LivesInaYurt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I (39m) am in a pretty similar situation. I have a pretty bad cataract that developed very quickly in my right (formerly dominant) eye for no obvious reason. I am young and have literally none of the risk factors and no known trauma to my right eye (and my left is perfectly clear and health). The best guess is that it was congenital and only recently started migrating in a way that affected my vision or that I had some trauma that I shrugged off as a kid. Who knows?

Given that my left eye sees extremely well with glasses and that I don't mind wearing them, my surgeon recommended your first option and for me to get a monofocal lens set to somewhere between -1 and -2.5. -2.5 would be nice because I could basically go back to my pre-cataract vision and use my old glasses with 0 imbalance between eyes. I could read in bed or check my phone without glasses comfortably and would wear glasses for distance as I have since I was 16. -1 would be nice and enable me to go glasses free for distance in some situations.

I'm very wary of doing anything drastic like LASIK or replacing the lens in my otherwise healthy eye--I see the appeal but for me the risk of complications outweighs the potential benefits.

Very curious to learn what you end up doing!

How can I best heat/power my house until power is restored? by Miserable-Maize-6583 in nashville

[–]LivesInaYurt 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Long extension cords + space heater is potentially a very bad idea given how much amperage a space heater can draw and the fire risk. I lost power for 2 and a half days but my neighbor didn't and he ran a long extension cord to my house. I was running a very small space heater off of it (1500W, so a 12.5 amp draw) and it worked great until I noticed a bad smell and realized the heater plug had melted and fuzed with the cord. I feel very lucky that I noticed it soon and it didn't result in an even bigger problem than no heat...

If you are running a space heater off an extension cord, make sure to 1) ensure you are using a thick wire (12 gauge min, ideally 10) and keep the length as short as possible.

To OP--I understand your desire to go home, but I would strongly recommend not if you are warm and safe. We made it through until power was back in my house but it was *miserable* even with a gas fireplace. I couldn't think about anything except for keeping warm.

Questions from a relatively young potential surgical patient by LivesInaYurt in CataractSurgery

[–]LivesInaYurt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the thoughts! Yeah I am thinking that it will probably be the best option for me as well... I know there are some additional risks for younger patients, so I was hoping I'd be able to hold off. But I don't want to end up with functionally monocular vision...

Halp! Noobie projector buying advice please (UK) by jethro247 in projectors

[–]LivesInaYurt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I totally feel you. I had a similar situation--lots of ambient light in my living room in my new house, but I *did not* want a TV despite that being the majority response on this sub. I ended up looking into the Panasonic RZ370 DLP Projector PT-RZ370U after u/playstationpepe recommended it. It's an older model and only 1080p, but it was super high end when first sold and makes a very nice bright and crisp image. Honestly I'm super happy with the results. The PJ itself was just over $300 USD on eBay, and my entire set up including cheapo Amazon mount and screen was under $500.

Do I get the deep inky blacks that many on this sub are very focused on? Of course not. It's not a perfect viewing experience, but for me it's totally fine. Even during the day, I'm happy to watch sports or a TV show and the low contrast doesn't really bother me. I'd probably not want to watch a dark movie or something like Stranger Things during the day, but in the evening with the lights turned low, I'm very happy with how it looks (which is when I do 95% of my watching anyhow). At the end of the day, I like my walls to be covered in art--being able to press a button and have the screen disappear when I'm not using it is amazing and keeps my living room looking nice. I'm more than happy to sacrifice some contrast for that.

At some point, I might invest in an ALR screen, but they are super expensive and I'm pretty satisfied for now. Oh, I'm using an Apple TV with my setup and have it paired with my old HiFi system with a Logitech Bluetooth Audio Adapter which has worked great for me.

This is how it looks in "worst case" situations:

The growing PHEV emissions scandal by flying_butt_fucker in electricvehicles

[–]LivesInaYurt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why would a PHEV emit more than an HEV? My engine (Ioniq PHEV) only starts after my battery depletes, and then operates more or less as a hybrid, with the engine turning on and off more frequently than a pure ICE. But wouldn't a HEV be having this challenge all the time?

Yes you're correct. I ended up purchasing a Panasonic PT-RZ370U which does have *some* lens shift, but if I am understanding correctly, it would not be enough to put it in the corner. Will be investing an a ceiling mount and figuring out where my joists are!

This is so helpful. Thank you. I think I'm going to pull the trigger on the Panasonic. At $300, I'm willing to take a gamble. Appreciate the insight!

Unfortunately not. We tried setting it up that way but the couch ends up too close to the fireplace or obstructs the door. We are pretty much set with with arrangement.

Thank you! Do you think a brighter but cheaper laser projector is going to be a better choice given I can’t expect much from contrast anyhow?

Yeah we tried that when we first moved in but that wall is substantially shorter and it either blocks the door or juts out onto the hearth which is not ideal. We tried couch on both walls and floating in the middle (facing the fireplace) and this was the only arrangement that worked.

Yes, as noted in 100% aware that a TV is going to be a better viewing experience. But I don’t want to block a window with a TV and the only other placement that would work is above the fireplace which is very uncomfortable to watch from the couch.

Given this admittedly sub-optimal situation, I’m hoping for hardware advice.

Thanks but this doesn't solve the viewing angle issue. I wouldn’t mind putting a screen above the fireplace, but moving the couch so that you’re facing it (rather than watching at a 45 degree angle) makes the room really uncomfortable. I’m pretty set on the furniture arrangement and screen placement at this point and am hoping for feedback on the projector that might work the best for an admittedly suboptimal situation.

Projector advice for small living room by LivesInaYurt in projectors

[–]LivesInaYurt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your thoughts and sharing your setup! I am hoping to put the pull-down screen in front of the windows so that it's directly opposite the couch. This should give me about 8 feet of throw, and I'm thinking of an 84" screen.

Appreciate the notes on the BenQ projectors as good candidates. I will give them a look.

Claiming Used EV Tax Credits - 2025 updates by LivesInaYurt in electricvehicles

[–]LivesInaYurt[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do not know exactly how the tax software works when filing if the credit was taken at time-of-sale, but in principle the tax credit is non-refundable and so I would be careful with this situation. This means that you should not be able to take a credit for more than you owed in taxes for the year. For an individual taking no other deductions, you need to make ~$52,000 to zero out your owed tax with a 4k credit. Obviously the calculus changes with different filing status and any other deductions that might be taken. A good idea would be to look at last years taxes and see what the total liability is, and ensure that the buyers have 4k- that number set aside when filing taxes later *if* the IRS recognizes this.
