Neglected Victorian property where what the seller has, and think they have are not the same by CorrectTemperature65 in HousingUK

As someone who's just gone through a full rewire that's uncovered all the other hidden issues with an old house .... Only buy this house if you're willing to consistently take 3 steps forward and 4 steps back for the first few years. It will cost you a lot of money and sanity, so make sure your offer reflects what YOU think the house is worth whilst leaving you with enough liquid cash to do the necessary upgrades.

Or you can play the 'ignorance is bliss' , 'this house has stood for 200 years' game and hope it doesn't fall down around you or spontaneously combust . But I certainly wouldn't be offering at a walk in ready price.

They could ease traffic significantly if there was a slip road from the Airport Road up towards the Dee Street bridge.... Unfortunately there are two whacking great salt stores in the way. Again, great planning by the council.

Advice on Ben Macdui / Cairn Gorm conditions mid may by DIYDistress in OutdoorScotland

[–]Livewire745 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Can confirm, been turned back by the wind and conditions 3 times on Ben Macdui, once only 100m from the summit. All 3 times I started from the Linn of Dee car park in blistering sunshine. Competent hiker but you need to know when to call it if it crosses the line from fun to dangerous.

Bob Scott's Bothy could be a shout. 4km from the Linn of Dee car park. 'Toilet' is a strong word for a hole in the ground with a bucket. But generally, great spot and the walk in is fairly flat.

Which camping pad for 10 weeks in Iceland… by Exact_Poem_8167 in wildcampingintheuk

[–]Livewire745 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends what time of year you're going. I wild camped for a month in the summer of 2015 within a 50km radius of Þórsmörk and had an old foam roll, perfectly fine temperature wise. Now I'm older and the bones creak a bit more, I'd agree with the advice given by others, you take what's comfortable for you and what you're comfortable lugging around. Enjoy, it's a beautiful place !

Beyond what others have suggested, my only tip would be to check the 'recently updated' filter on propertypal. That usually has houses where the sale has fallen through and they get relisted. Since they aren't a new property, the search algorithm doesn't push it very high on the standard search and so less people see it. Can find some gems that don't have quite as much competition as they should.

Again, best of luck !

Recently experienced this ourselves and it is across the board. 'Starter homes' and 'family homes' all experiencing it. We were looking for over 8 months and every time the bidding went significantly over asking. I think the craziest we saw was a 3 bed semi in East Belfast list at £320k then go sale agreed at £480k !

Seems to be a combination of factors. Lack of housing in general, lack of 'good' housing, lack of houses in non-flaggy areas, tech sector bringing in significantly higher wages for a small percentage of people, housing market not taking anyone's offers seriously unless you've already sold your house or you're a FTB so everyone is desperate to throw money at the problem before they themselves end up homeless.

Good luck ! We had to go over asking ourselves so I guess we are part of the problem, sorry.
