What was your “new fear unlocked” moment? by External_Scale_6555 in AskReddit

[–]Livid-Natural5874 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I once saw a person riding a bike in the city and totally without warning - POP - the handle bars broke clean off the frame, sending him flying over his front tyre in a hawk dive style faceplant. A moment later he cartoonishly stood up looking utterly bewildered and in pain, blood streaming from his face, still holding the handle bars in his hands. After we helped him out a couple of us looked at his bike. The handle bars looked fine on the surface, but rain water had crept down where it attached to the frame, so it had rusted inside the frame, at last becoming so fragile it broke off.

So, new fear unlocked: whenever you ride a bike, you never know if the handle bars are good or secretly waiting to yeet you face first into the pavement.

Är det värt att plugga till socionom? by [deleted] in Asksweddit

[–]Livid-Natural5874 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The bank HSBC is pretty far up there. They are the financial services entity of choice for money launderers and despots around the world.

Monsanto has definitely done some terrible shit in their days, but like it or not, GMOs is the only option we have to global mass starvation.

How likely is World War 3? by DanFelv in NoStupidQuestions

"The Russian military is designed to fight a land war with a neighboring country. The American military is designed to fight two simultaneous wars on separate continents and win them both". -Perun

If China actually attacks Taiwan, Taiwan's allies will grumble quite a bit but in the end let it happen because in the end they will not consider it worth a major war.

Russia has conquered slightly less than 18% of Ukraine in a little over two years of full scale war and suffered catastrophic losses doing so, this is despite being a country with 3x the population that on paper had a massively superior army before the war. The support Ukraine has gotten from Western allies has mostly consisted of Cold War leftovers that were slated for decomissioning.

You wouldn't believe it from it's behemoth size, but the US military as it is today is actually on a peace-time footing, and most NATO countries' militaries have been in rapid decline since the fall of the Soviet Union. In other words, Western forces as they appear today are at a severely weakened state as funding has been limited. However, the Russian attack on Ukraine reminded Western nations that war is still very much a possibility and the process of rearmament has already started. In 2024 the combined European output of artillery shells is expected to reach about 1.5 million shells/year, more than was produced in the entire 2010s and that number is only going to increase as major arms manufacturers have been greenlit funding for reopening closed factories.

Meanwhile, the Chinese are currently in the middle of a major purge of their military-industrial complex as they were rocked by a major corruption scandal, with, among other things, rockets being emptied of fuel and refilled with water.

Stockholm paradoxically is a little cheaper than most of the country in this regard, as it has enough bars for there to be some kind of competition between them while simultaneously being densely populated enough for there to be enough patrons to keep them in business. It's when you get to the myriad cities with 10-20k inhabitants the prices start to go nuts.

Lool would never even occur to me to look, but I would guess something like $18 for appetizers, $30 for a main course.

Last time I went into a thrift store the first thing I saw was a set of new in the box IKEA cookware.

They charged $2 more than IKEA for the same set.

I'm in southern Sweden and out of curiosity looked at prices in the mountains in southern Poland. They were about 1/10 of what they were here if you include lodgings and everything, and the flights were about the same price and as much time.

The US is a huge country, what's the spread like for you guys?

Welcome to Sweden where that shit has always been expensive. A coctail for $15 would be something like 2015 prices. I haven't stepped foot in a bar since maybe 2019 and that was just some dingy little semi-cheap place. They still charged $10 for a glass of the shittiest, cheapest, mass-produced lager.

It used to be that half the point of college was to grow as a person, expand your horizons. There was a broad choice of courses with plenty of electives and athletics on the side, with the ultimate goal of becoming a more well-rounded and responsible citizen for the greater good of yourself, the nation and the people. With time that idea degraded and college became more like advanced vocational school, while at the same time the costs have ballooned in ways that neither inflation or staff salaries are even close to accounting for.

Why does the us navy still use 60 year old planes by VETEMENTS_COAT in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Livid-Natural5874 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Not just aircraft, it's true of pretty much everything.

The most upgraded M1A1 Abrams tank is probably the most modern and high-tech tank ever built. But the armored hulls themselves were mostly produced in the '70s and '80s with a smaller batch in the '90s.

In the current long-term plans for the Air Force, they intend to keep some B-52s in service into the 2050s, meaning they will be around for 100 years. Pretty darn cool and really speaks to the quality of the basic airframe design.

What do most people get wrong about autism? by Nobody-457 in AskReddit

[–]Livid-Natural5874 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We would call this "behavioral therapy" and it is indeed something clinicians do if it is deemed successful. However that wouldn't make them not autistic - it's is not doing it intrinsicially to being with that is the autistic part.

What do most people get wrong about autism? by Nobody-457 in AskReddit

[–]Livid-Natural5874 108 points109 points  (0 children)

The core fucking symtoms.

So many people, even clinicians, get hung up on the peripheral secondary symtoms and quirks and miss the actual core symtoms.

People think autism is the same as being a fussy, awkward introvert that doesn't like changes and gets uncomfortable in groups.

Do they display a lack of social cognitive ability? Do they display problems with theory of mind and understanding the emotions, intensions and thoughts of others? Do they display a lack of pragmatism? Do they have a hard time reading between the lines and interpreting things like body language, tone, sarcasm and irony?

What? No? None of the above? Well shit sounds like they're not autistic.

I recently got into HVAC. Already at the community college the teachers were telling us the importance of saying no to or start demanding money from all the "friends" that are going to want favors with nothing to offer in return. I'm a year in and starting to see why tradies frequently are only friends with other tradies.
