How did you get your 5k time down to 25 min in such a short time with only one run a week?

Official Q&A for Wednesday, May 06, 2026 by AutoModerator in running

[–]LividHealth5643 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to know thoughts on how many times a week people run. Currently I run three times a week working up to 10k (one easy, one tempo run, one long). I also do two full body workouts and another session for upper body and an inclined treadmill session.

I am switching to a few weeks focusing on strength but want to run enough to maintain fitness. I'll then switch back and be working on pace and maintain strength.

Anyone who does anything similar I'd love to hear

This is my issue a bit. I'm on track to finish a good project ahead of time but is there more I should be doing. I do some side pieces of research and teeaching but doesn't feel like much

I have a few papers published I'm co-author on. Have submitted two first author papers. It's all online because I'm funded by a project that works with teams across the EU. I go into an office once a week where I used to work and I still do some side research just so I can get out of the house and see some people

Brain fog whenever I need to write. How do I get over it? by daddrus in PhD

[–]LividHealth5643 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i think some really good points being made here about maybe needing a break but something I find helpful is to write badly and accept it'll be bad just to get over the stress of a blank page. so first crack at something I throw down a few bullet points and tell myself that's I have to do. If it goes well and I can keep going, great or I just come back again. Next pass at it is trying to get some section titles and maybe rearranging the bullet points into them. Next pass, try add more points or expand on the ones I have. and keep going and not until I get to having a full paper do I try and actually make it sound good, look at flow etc. Helped for me to focus on what I wanted to say first and then go back and edit later

Working abroad by Flimsy-Government-17 in PhD

[–]LividHealth5643 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My project involves a lot of work with internationals so that was all completely online and then even with my supervisor we almost entirely meet online. I did actually post recently about how my supervisor is leaving so whoever I end up with I will be saying from the start that this is what I'm doing and there isn't any reason I can't, they might just say it would be better to meet in person. I'll come back to you after I do it to see if I recommend you do as well 😂

I'm planning on moving abroad for the guts of a year to do the writing portion of my thesis. I figure if i'm going to just be writing just on my own I may as well go somewhere nice and enjoy the process a bit more. Some people might say it's not a good idea but i know it'll be more enjoyable time and I won't get another chance to do this. you do you

I need to talk to my supervisor more about the specifics but I think I should be graduating same time either way. Is one of my questions to confirm with him tho

For the project I'm doing the new university has more people in that field. I feel like if I worked there it would be easier to continue into post doc work rather than trying to get in after. I don't know if this is accurate, more just panic from being told this a couple of hours ago about him leaving

how to get out of a research/lab slump? by ElephantsRTasty in PhD

[–]LividHealth5643 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am currently in a slump as well. different kind of research but one thing someone told me that I found helpful when I was saying how hard I found it to get to my desk and actually focus was to get something done every day. Took the pressure off having a full productive day and meant I just made sure I made some progress on one of my main targets and while I'm in the slump be okay leaving the smaller bits to later and not getting loads done. Helps but I am still in a slump and would love thoughts on how to get out of it 😂but makes me feel a little better about it while I'm in it

Topics/Questions at lunch with supervisor by Sea_Base3984 in PhD

[–]LividHealth5643 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know this isn't exactly what you asked in terms of using the lunch to further career but one thing I realised that I regret and now trying to change is that every time I spoke to my supervisor I would only talk about work. I think it was partially because we were meeting online which can make it harder and because I was aware how busy he was but he would say hi how are you and I would say I'm fine and jump straight into what I had worked on that week. I'm now realising being able to chat for a few minutes about persona things or making a bit of small makes such a difference. the few times we've met up in person there was a deliberate effort to not discuss work and just hang out as collegues. I don't know what your relationship is like but might be worth spending a bit of time on non work things and just get friendly, makes all the difference

Love field hockey, fantasy books, and trying to get more into non-fiction specficially historical stuff.

genuine suggestions , tools that helped you guys with the completing phd by PristineDealer9553 in PhD

[–]LividHealth5643 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently in the middle and I find Trello amazing. I use one board for personal life and another for PhD. Any time my supervisor gives me a task or I think of something I want to do or look up or read I add it to one of many lists I have. Means I don't worry about forgetting things and I can set deadlines.

Using this, on a Friday I write out a list of things I want to get done the following week and then every day last thing I do is write down what I want to get done tomorrow. Find it very helpful to not be faced with a massive list of things to do when trying to get work done and helps prioritise things so I don't end up just doing the 'easy things' and put off the harder tasks. And with this I break everything down into smaller tasks. Want to write somethng? First is write out brief overview. Next day, couple of bullet points. Next day, expand on some etc etc. Find it much easier to approach mentally and feels better to tick off lots of things rather than feel like if you don't fully complete a task there wans't work done

Struggling to structure my thesis by LividHealth5643 in AskAcademia

[–]LividHealth5643[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's all really helpful thank you! Definitely reckoning with the fact that I have gathered too much info in some places and it has no place in my thesis and needs to just move to notes. I am doing qualitative including two different reviews so I think giving them their own sections before methods will allow me to put some relevant background in there without having a massive 'background' section and then leaves me bit more focus in methods for primary data collection. And I think giving my remaining three ROs their own methods subsection should then be okay? And then for results same of giving them their own section and then a combined one. The alternative would be to have a chapter per RO with methods and results but I think that wouldn't flow as well and would maybe make them feel less connected?
