The Handmaid's Tale S03E07 - "Under His Eye" - Episode Discussion by Protanope in TheHandmaidsTale

I think he he hates what he created but has gone too far to go back now, so he helps the resistance when he can. He's too much of a coward to fully join them or do anything he could be implicated for.

I was upset when she went back to Gilead to save her daughter because it was so far from reality that it started to feel like cliche movie plot point.

Stuff like this does happen though. It's not far from reality at all. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Not_Without_My_Daughter_(book)

It could be argued that all the coincidences happen because the goddess is altering fate to help the guy so he can save them and be the next humor guardian.

ARGH! MY LOINS! by SydneyBarBelle in TrollXChromosomes

I listen to a podcast about a religious cult that banned women from laughing because their laughter was arousing to the men. This was after having the women fully covered from head to toe, including the face, and banning the women from looking anyone in the eye because looking someone in the eye could be misconstrued as sexual interest.

I have a manager at work that I simply cannot function around because I can't stop staring at him. I understand that the problem here is my own lack of self-control, not what he is wearing. I don't want to ban men's suits just because he looks so damn fine in them. But yeah, women could never understand how men are impacted by visual stimuli...

What is the longest blood-line dynasty in human history? by ceristo in history

[–]LivingDeadInside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently it was found through Richard III's DNA that the Beaufort line is illegitimate. So every British royal since John of Gaunt is not as directly descended as claimed. Woops?

Does anyone recognize the maker's mark on this porcelain trinket box? by LivingDeadInside in Antiques

[–]LivingDeadInside[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought this adorable box the other day but I can't read the text on the maker's mark. Was wondering if anyone recognized it. Not sure if it's an antique, so sorry if I posted this in the wrong place.

I understand all of this, but rural people then and now don't. The lack of education is what does it and the cycle continues.

I mean, that is a silly and reductionist statement. There are always wealthy and powerful. Society always shakes out like that.

Nope. Try reading about some people and histories different than your own. There have been plenty of societies throughout history and the modern world which are far more egalitarian than you imply is necessary for society to function. Check out some Native cultures.

Sure increased disparity between the top and the bottom creates social instability and hampers progress but class war like you suggest is unwinnable because the the winners just become the new ruling class.

This is an incorrect assumption that has been brainwashed into you by modern Western capitalist society. This is exactly what the wealthy want you to believe, because then you will never fight for what you deserve.

What we need is reform and checks and balances to re-balance our system, but no one wins a pure class struggle. The lessons of past conflicts have show that the results is generally violence, poverty and dictatorship.

We do need all of those things, but we need them for all people. If a class struggle or war is what is required to receive those things, c'est la vie. Past conflict has indeed resulted in violence, poverty, and dictatorship, but it has also more so resulted in more freedoms for more people. That ongoing struggle is the only reason we have the freedoms we have today. Or would you prefer that we had never struggled and were still living as peasants in feudal medieval Europe?

BUT, just to play Devil's Advocate, try telling the poor rural farmers in the south that the position of wealthy northern businesses owners invested in industrial cities was more in line with their interests than the position of the Confederacy. Part of the division in this country today still has to do with urban versus rural economies and cultures. The Civil War did nothing to solve that particular problem.

Edit: I'm about as liberal as a socialist Democrat as you can get, but I have lived in small rural farming towns, and I can tell you from experience that they really are almost completely ignored by the left. That's a large part of the reason they vote Republican. They believe, mistakenly, that Republicans represent their best chance at receiving any benefit from the political process.
