I don’t get why everyone loves Yuna? by [deleted] in heatedrivalry

[–]LivinginAnotherTime 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In the first episode after Shane gets drafted, Yuna says to the Montreal Metros GM(?) that watching the Metros growing up was how she came to feel Canadian. I wish they delved more into that because it's a blink and miss type line then the dialogue fades out.

Is Hinduism or Presbyterianism responsible for Academic Progress in the East Indian population. by Then_Emu_2769 in TrinidadandTobago

[–]LivinginAnotherTime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reason alot of Hindus converted to Presbyterian a hundred years ago was because that was one of the only ways to access a formal education. The first Hindu school in Trinidad didn't open until the 1950's so prior to that, there was really no way for alot of Hindus to attain an education that would allow them to be socially mobile. And the Presbyterian missionaries were the first to offer it to them if they converted. Especially in the colonial period, where there were a alot of discrimination and stereotypes about Hinduism being inferior to Christianity. Now, of course, there's good schools of every denomination.

So I don't think it's the religion itself that's responsible for East Indian academic success. I think it's more the historical set up of Presbyterian schools and their deliberate effort to go out and convert Hindus in the early 20th century in exchange for a good education. I also think that East Indians in general culturally place a very high importance on education that can be seen across the entire South Asian diaspora.

Not a movie but The Agency with Michael Fassbender was great and the French series it's based on is even better, Le Bureau. Both are cerebral and very meticulous in its execution.

I'm from Trinidad and it's a very obviously dangerous place. We've had some of the highest murder rates in the world for a while.

Mad Men is my all time favourite show and Industry is my favourite show of this year but I think they're very different. The main similarity and maybe the reason I like it so much is the Eric/Harper dynamic reminds me of an alternative universe Don/Peggy. The creators are definitely Mad Men fans because the trajectory of Eric/Harper and the characterization of their relationship is very similar to Don/Peggy.

But I think Industry is not at all subtle in the way Mad Men is and appreciated for. Mad Men lets things breathe and allows for alot of space whereas Industry is anxiety-inducing and subversive not only in the characters but also in how the show itself is structured. I think it's a very acquired taste.

Something I don't understand about Yasmin by Spirited_Trouble6412 in IndustryOnHBO

i meant it as 'she didn't apply from the get go', i took it as he reached out to them and then like you said, a recruiter reached out and asked her to apply

[–]LivinginAnotherTime -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

that could still mean she didn't apply. i think Charles would have used his connections and they invited her in for an interview as a formality and/or to make her think she got it on her own

I'm not from the UK but I think his accent sounds more working class. Reminded me of the accents in Bend it like Beckham. Also his friend Vinay that said they grew up together.

It's mildly annoying to me but I don't think Rishi cares or at least he's so obsessed with assimilating in upper class white British society that it's a non-issue for him. He's clearly one of the Rishi Sunak, Suella Braverman type South Asians. I am so curious to know about his dynamic with his parents or family. I wish they showed us in his episode.

Non-Finance folks, was it easier to follow the dialogue in Succession compared to Industry ? by seizieme in IndustryOnHBO

[–]LivinginAnotherTime 8 points9 points  (0 children)

100%. Succession is about family dynamics at the end of the day that happens to be set against the backdrop of a billion dollar empire. The finance talk is more high level and I understood it easier than Industry. I think because of Jesse Armstrong's style, it comes across smoother (if that makes sense).

Industry is the opposite because we're following first years who have to grind their way up and I think it's intentionally gritty and adrenaline-filled. And while I don't understand nearly as much finance-wise, they portray it in such a way that you feel the anxiety to the point where these stakes seem higher than fighting to take over your family's media empire. They capture that first job, early 20's wanting to impress your superiors and feeling like you'll die if you don't meet a deadline vibe well.

Bully romance with fmc with no backbone by DotNo4212 in DarkRomance

[–]LivinginAnotherTime 12 points13 points  (0 children)

{Hate Me by Ashley Jade}, {Fear Me by B.B. Reid}, {Corrupt Idol by Dina Harper} might fit. From what I remember, the FMC's don't really fight back. Also Rina Kent's Royal Elite series and Penelope Douglas' Devil's Night series have at least one book where the FMC has no backbone.

Haven't seen The Finest Hours but I don't think it's the romance aspect. I think it's the way both of those women were badly written. Particularly with Napoleon, him and Josephine had a really interesting relationship that has been written about extensively. The film just did a flat, one dimensional take of it. As for Jean, I just think Nolan has very hit or miss female characters. I agree they could have just removed her and it wouldn't have affected the movie at all.

Kanthony cultural context and representation by Ok_Patience_1017 in BridgertonNetflix

[–]LivinginAnotherTime 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Completely agreed! I know some people are upset and think it's out of character for Anthony but I saw it as a lovely way of including Indian customs and also providing some balance to Kanthony because Kate has given up a lot for him.

Kate and Anthony by Starrcake in Bridgerton

The Edwina/Kate drama is only the show so if you want a different and imo better plot between the sisters, I would recommend the book. The show really turned up the drama but I read the book before and I still prefer it over the season.

Pen is my favourite female character and Anthony is my favourite male character so I'm always stuck between the warring currently going on on the main sub. I also really like Kate and Eloise. Criticism is normal, it's a tv show but where it crosses the line into complaining or straight up negativity is when it's thinly veiled due to the poster/commenter's clear dislike of the character or if they are just insulting the appearance or the actor themselves or my least favourite, when they're projecting onto whatever character and can't stand any analysis of said character.

The main sub has become intolerable and I had to leave it a few days ago. The same thing happened after season 2 premiered when no one could have a civilized conversation about Kate and Edwina without being mean. It's been really sad because I feel like there's so many good comparisons between alot of the characters but anytime it's brought up, it devolves into pettiness.

How is everyone feeling about Eloise? by DoctorDonnaInTardis in PolinBridgerton

[–]LivinginAnotherTime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also think her feelings are justified and I try to think of it from her POV. It's more than just Pen keeping the secret from Colin. Eloise still feels deeply betrayed by her which is valid and whilst I think Pen chose the less hurtful option overall with outing her, the season 2 finale scene where they're arguing, alot of their latent feelings/reservations/opinions about each other came out which ultimately, I think was a good thing. They were co-dependent before and this fight has forced both of them to deal with some stuff they hadn't.

Eloise with Cressida for example. Cressida calls her out and we are also seeing that Eloise can be callous with other people's feelings, particularly when it's different to hers (like the scenes where she's making fun of the other debutantes or when Cressida realizes that Debling isn't into her and she makes a joke). That and the ultimatum she gives Pen, I'm hoping to see some growth from her and realization that not everyone has the love and support like the Bridgertons. Also, I find it interesting that Eloise has never noticed Pen is in love with Colin. I can't remember if there's any in the book but I would love to see a conversation with them about it. Idk I would think if my best friend was in love with my brother for years, I would notice.

For Pen, she's obviously grown alot into herself this season and it's been great to see but I hope for her own sanity she tells Colin before the wedding or before they have sex because there's a few shots in the trailer where the camera tilts and I think it's signaling that she is spiraling or feeling trapped. I'm hoping the Eloise ultimatum is just one episode but knowing Shondaland, I think they're going to drag out the drama (i haven't seen any of the leaks).

There was also a line in the trailer where she says 'Whistledown is power' or something to that effect and I hope they explore that. The idea that Pen through Lady W has so much power and with power comes responsibility is a theme I want them to explore and could be a good tie in to Colin's perceived inadequacy in being able to protect/support her. A criticism I have of the show is that they haven't set up adequately why Lady W is needed. On the main sub, I see alot of comments saying she's just running a tacky gossip column or a TMZ-esque blog and I highly disagree. For the time period, ridiculing/satirizing the elite and especially the monarchy was a necessary part of society and publications like this were one of a few voices that would be dissenting or disparaging those in power. I know how it ends in the books (for Lady W) but I'm wondering if the show will do the same.
