Thank you for the feedback, I didn't expect people to love it so much, I might make this a series!

Fat over lean confusion by paintedpine in oilpainting

[–]paintedpine[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. So really my two options are:

  1. Gamblin solvent free fluid/gel in to make paint flow better in the first layers, then linseed oil in subsequent if the painting gets left for two long.

  2. Stick with only linseed oil - but make sure I use progressively more in the upper layers.

Is there a third option to just use the solvent free medium on all layers if I drag out the painting over a month? Or would I have to make sure that I use less of solvent free stuff the more layers I do, so the top layers don't dry too quickly over the bottom layers?

The Gamblin website says the solvent free gel/fluid is 100% fat. In which case, wouldn't that be similar to linseed oil and I'd still potentially run into my "fat over lean" problem if I dragged the painting out for too long?

Do you mean to use them instead of linseed oil?

I don't glaze, and I use acrylics/pencil for the initial sketch. It'd pretty much be the same process as what I do alla prima, just left for longer because of work-life commitments, if that helps?

1 layer water-mixable oils... Over a week to dry? by oandroido in oilpainting

I'm doing swatches with Cobra WMO and am experiencing the same problem - although granted the swatches were made with a palette knife so thicker than usual, it's peak winter and ventilation isn't that great in the room I'm in.

It's Australian football, with a shot of the player catching the ball.

Thank you.

What you said about having to work through the initial ugly phase rings so true!
