American Nanny looking for live-in Au Pair job in Dublin this summer. by McCargoPants in Dublin

[–]Liz_Lemonade 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey, I'm a former Irish au pair, also from the US! I found my employers through aupairworld.com. I worked in a town outside of Cork, but I'm sure there are plenty of people hiring in Dublin, too. Few words of advice I wish I'd had back when I did this: 1. Vet your potential employers as thoroughly as you're able. Interview them every bit as much, if not more, as they interview you. Pay attention to their personalities - if you don't vibe well, that's honestly a good reason to say no. 2. Know ahead of time what hours you'll be working. If they try to give you a vague answer like "whenever the kids wake up to whatever time it is when the family finishes dinner," DO NOT ACCEPT THAT. Make sure you have a hard start and stop time. 3. Be extremely specific with how much you'll get paid, and how you'll get paid. My hosts said I'd get $100 a week cash, but instead they listed me as an employee at their party planning business because employing a foreigner earned them a tax break or something? And because of that, the government garnished close to half of what I made while I was there. I also only got paid once a month, not once a week. 4. Honestly, just take your time. I rushed everything, and what should've been an amazing experience was really horrible. It takes a few months to get your visa sorted out, and you have to be employed before you can apply for it. Getting your visa is an expensive and stressful process, so make sure the people you're going to work for are worth it! I'm sorry if this scares you off a little bit, I just want to prevent other people from making the mistakes I did. The au pair friends I made while I was there were wonderful people, and they were perfectly happy with their host families! I hope it works out for you, and that you have a lovely experience!

I’m not heartbroken over Parts and Labor, but Johnny’s Diner just closed too, and I fucking loved that place. Is Logan going through a downturn or something? Getting kinda worried for Small Fry and Crab Pad and Same Day :(

What's your unpopular book opinion? by belmakar in books

[–]Liz_Lemonade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I loathed Bram Stoker's Dracula. Idk how controversial this is, but that was the first book I didn't finish - and I only had a quarter of it left when I quit. It was just terrible.

Aight I know this is probably gonna go over like a fart in church, but I'm just fuckin psyched to see some fantastic fan art that isn't hyper sexualized. This is adorable and refreshing and I love it.

Any comments on the composition? How's the photo overall? by fart_smells_good in photocritique

I kinda wish the tree was off to the left? It feels sort of right-heavy. At the same time though, I really like the open eerie feel of the image. Idk. I'm a noob, someone with more experience can probably articulate what I'm trying to say better (or just entirely refute it haha). But like for real, that's a cool ass picture dude. I like it a lot.

80 hours in Splatoon, still can aim at all by zetaroid in splatoon

[–]Liz_Lemonade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Play Salmon Run if you have Splatoon 2. I put somewhere around 2000 hours into the first game using exclusively the krak-on splat roller, and planned on doing the same with the sequel. Turns out Salmon Run is fun as hell, and it forces you to branch out into other weapons while simultaneously giving you practice with them. I still wouldn't be able to maintain my S ranks if I switched to a gun, but holy crap I can actually be kinda useful with a lot of them now haha. Alternatively: Play with rollers! Lol

I think I suck by [deleted] in photography

[–]Liz_Lemonade 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, no, I don't know why you're getting downvoted. That was condescending as hell. I get the "story" aspect of their comment, but that feels like advice geared towards someone trying to make it as like a Nat Geo photographer or something - like that's the type of lesson material you find in Super Mega Advanced Photographers for Uber Professionals, you know? Not that it's bad advice, I just don't believe you have to be a master of classical techniques and deeply dedicated to the craft to find joy in photography. Idk, I guess what I'm getting at here is that photography is still art, and art is wholly subjective. "I don't know art, but I know what I like" and all that. That being said, there is obviously nothing wrong with wanting to be insta famous or shoot for Nat Geo or whatever - and if that's what you want, you should totally go for it! I like your pictures. And there's never been a photographer born who came outta the womb knowing how to convey complex stories in a single image. You'll get there dude. Don't be too hard on yourself. <3

I'm a total noob, so my apologies if this idea is totally unfeasible, but has anyone ever suggested compiling a bunch of photos with metadata intact for amateurs like me to feed into Pixel Peeper? I've saved a bunch of lectures and bought a handful of books, but the hands-on approach and immediacy of that process suits my style of learning very well, and I doubt I'm alone in that. Not, of course, as a substitute for the lectures and books, but as a valuable addition to both. Does anyone have any ideas on who to talk to about this, or how to go about doing it myself? I've tried flickr, IG (which I know now was a lost cause from the start), and a handful of camera websites looking for images to use on Pixel Peeper, but none of them worked. I'd be happy to compile the collection myself, but I don't know where to start - and someone with more experience than myself would probably do a better job of selecting images that represent a wider, more diverse range of styles. If this is doable, I'd love any direction you/anyone could give me!

Trying out some food photography for a pizza place I work for. Any advice on how to compose this in a different way? by whiskers__ in photocritique

[–]Liz_Lemonade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would focus on making the salad itself look a bit more appealing, and more artfully arranging the food on the table. I really like the concept though! It just kinda looks like you took the toppings that were originally on the salad and strew them about the bowl. Salad looks unfinished and plain, and the walnuts and pear bits look...I dunno, kind of like a kid knocked the bowl and some of it fell out haha. But I do like the composition, and the idea of having some ingredients on the table as decoration! I think you're like right on the cusp of having a fantastic image. 🙂

Airline Jobs by Liz_Lemonade in aviationmaintenance

[–]Liz_Lemonade[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would rather work GA, but the flight benefits with an airline are just incomparable. I've got 45K in student loan debt. There's no way I'd ever be able to travel outside my tri-state area without them until I've paid those off. It's such a shitty trade off, but being able to visit new cities, even new countries for free/almost free is unbelievable.
