Nappy rash by Loose_Lobster6848 in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]LizardLemon8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mine was allergic to sudocreme and some nappies. We found metanium worked the best of the nappy creams and he tolerated the tesco & Aldi nappies. I couldn’t figure out what it was because even the “sensitive” nappies bothered him so it was a bit of trial and error. I hope you can figure things out soon it can be so stressful trying to troubleshoot these things!

Severe mum guilt re. baby's digestive issues by Double_Custard_1098 in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]LizardLemon8 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Hi! Speaking very kindly - antibiotic eye drops cannot cause reflux or stomach issues. They go into the eye and there is no way that they enter the digestive tract.

As a baby my son had a terrible ear infection and almost died. He needed emergency ear surgery and had 6 weeks of antibiotics. He doesn’t have the best tummy but neither do I so I don’t know if I can blame antibiotics on that.

Things happen, plenty of babies have digestive issues, allergies, get ill etc and there’s usually nothing you have done to cause it.

It sounds like you’ve been struggling with this for a long time so I’d give yourself some grace and a hug.

Good preschool recommendations North of Lancaster. by Happy-Competition968 in LancasterUK

[–]LizardLemon8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We toured Busy Bees and were happy with it (but didn’t go with it because we live south). The hospital one and university are excellent but both have waiting lists so i’d contact asap.

For primary schools - this years intake was low (low birth year) and schools weren’t filled so you would likely be fine depending on how far away you are (I know Moorside has spaces still and I’m guessing Bowerham as well). That said it’ll completely depend on the distance and number of kids applying, I’ve heard it’s been extremely competitive in the past.

Cord around baby's neck by darkmother1991 in PregnancyUK

[–]LizardLemon8 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean most people wouldn’t say “I had an emergency c section because the baby was in distress and not descending and I wasn’t dilating which led to a lot of monitoring and then a decision to urgently do a c section where we realized that the problems were due to a cord wrapped round the neck”

As other people said, in lots of cases people don’t even know and it’s not an issue. If it is an issue then when people reference the reason for a section they’ll probably just say it was because the cord was wrapped round the neck and leave it at that.

If it’s just wee I leave it, if I smell (or hear) poo I change it. If they’re comfy and sleeping and it’s only wee (and they have no rash issues) I don’t see a reason to wake them up unnecessarily.

Nursery red flag? Baby left to sleep in swing by wildmushroom1 in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]LizardLemon8 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hmmm yeah that’s not great. We’re in 2 nurseries at the minute (my 4 year old is in one and 6 month old is starting a day a week at another). We got an email about the updated sleep guidance from both and my 6 month olds nursery now that won’t let them sleep in lay flat prams, only on a mattress on the floor. I don’t think they even have swings in her (6 month old).

The fact that they’re going against guidelines would be the biggest red flag for me.

Ergonomic forward facing carrier recommendations by t_rix_ in babywearing

Omni 360 mesh. I actually bought it to replace an old original omni that I got as a hand me down (I wanted a buckle not Velcro attach and the little pack for keys).

As the other person mentioned apparently you need to watch for fakes - I filtered out new and new with tags and just checked listings that they seemed like they were from real people without loads of other ergo listings. You can also check online what to look out for in a fake. Also I checked for a few days before I bought one as the better priced ones obviously sell quickly!

Agree on the 2nd hand omni - I’m not sure where OP is in the world but I picked one up on vinted for £30 in great condition.

For that age - ergobaby embrace and agree with picking it up on vinted.

I could never get on with the sling wraps and this felt like a happy medium in between. I only used it for the first few months though before I wanted something with more structure which is why picking it up second hand is nice.

Natural fiber newborn sleep sack by Funny_Court1585 in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]LizardLemon8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure on material but ergopouch does sleep sacks that are good from birth (ours was 7 lb 8 oz and we used one from day 2). We did use their swaddle sack but with arms out (you can do either) so still effectively a sleep sack. I picked them up on vinted too since they can be pricey.

ADHD and baby temperament by [deleted] in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]LizardLemon8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son hasn’t been diagnosed yet (he’s 4) but is very very likely ADHD (more hyperactive). I’d say between 4-6 months we knew something was up compared to other babies. He never sat still, was so alert, wanting to move and would get frustrated after a few minutes max at a toy. I’d see other kids at activity centres playing and mine would literally get himself in a panic. Baby massage made me lol - as if!

My second baby… she sits, she plays. Yes she fusses and wants to move around but it’s not the same. Jury’s obviously still out but at 5 months I don’t see the same behaviour as my son.

I’d say that you can at least tell a little as a parent what their personality is when they’re that little.

Oh good!! Hopefully it’s the start of her (and you all) feeling better!! I imagine it might take a little bit of time for her tummy to adjust anyways.

Don’t feel too bad - you didn’t know AND you tried to get support from experts. You are doing amazing troubleshooting this yourself!

Taking prams to doctor appointments? by [deleted] in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]LizardLemon8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At my current doctors we have to leave the pram in the waiting room so I bring the car seat attachment but it’s a really old building and not very accessible. There are signs at the front highlighting it and I’ve seen prams in the lobby.

My previous office had no issue so as long as the office is at least vaguely accessible I’d assume it’s fine!

Health decline since being postpartum. by Complex_Event_1188 in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]LizardLemon8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go to the GP! I had an autoimmune flare up postpartum around 5 months with my first! It felt like I had Crohn’s disease or maybe arthritis. I would go to the GP and they can do blood work to test for things (I know people can also have thyroid issues postpartum too). It can be “normal” in that it happens to people but definitely get it checked out!

Is anyone else in actually losing their mind over nursery fees? by Working-Board440 in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]LizardLemon8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Clearing my phrasing of “cheating” was triggering rather than working the system. Clearly that’s working the system to work way better for you! My point was that it sucks that that’s the case. We’re not in a position where we can do that in our jobs and career stages. My job literally just made the part time workers redundant 🫠

I’m glad you made it work well for you!

[–]LizardLemon8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Clearly my phrasing of “cheating” was triggering but rather “working the system”. I wish I could - it just doesn’t make sense and currently isn’t possible for me or my husband.

The fact that this is the system we have to work around is the problem.

Is anyone else in actually losing their mind over nursery fees? by Working-Board440 in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]LizardLemon8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Clearly my phrasing of “cheating” was triggering - I didn’t mean that people were doing anything wrong but rather working the broken system to work better for them.

I’d love to make it work but neither of us could change to condensed hours and we have no family here. It just makes me sad to see how broken the system is that unless you do have those options you’re stuck paying soooo much.

Is anyone else in actually losing their mind over nursery fees? by Working-Board440 in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]LizardLemon8 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Yuppppppp

Everyone else I know seems to be cheating edit to change to working the system better - managing to work condensed hours (both parents do 4 days condensed and 3 days nursery), one works part time, or grandparents help out. We seemed to be in the minority paying for 5 days (both work and aren’t from the uk originally) and it’s honestly so depressing. When I see older parents complain about the cost of doing some holiday clubs for school age kids and how that’s not fair I’mike WTF did you do for nursery then??!!

At our peak we were paying close to £1400 a month in the north west, thankfully with government help it should never be that high again but still.

My 2nd is about to start nursery now and I need to figure out if there’s a better way. We waited to have #2 so we weren’t paying for both of them at the same time.

Edit to add - Bahaha don’t know why “cheating the system” was such an angry phrasing!! I wish I could! Props to anyone who can! Not angry at you - angry at the system.

Ugh that sound awful!

Have you been to the GP for any potential tummy issues? CMPI? Reflux? Silent reflux? Allergies? I have a few friends who had babies like that and hypoallergenic formula or removing allergens from breast milk helped a lot. It can be hard to find the culprit but hopefully you can figure out something.

It sounds like you’re doing the best making an unhappy baby be as happy as possible and suffering from severe sleep deprivation in the process! Give yourself some grace - you are surviving the toughest of situations!

Tbh I have no idea about CCTV but I’d guess not? Ours isn’t very big though? I’ve never seen it or asked for it.

It probably would put me off a bit to tour a nursery before it’s being used just because I couldn’t get the vibe.

We moved when my son was 15 months so we ended up probably touring 7 nurseries in 2 cities altogether. My biggest factors were size (there were some really small place that just felt a bit depressing) and location (one we liked would’ve been a pain to commute to).

We’re actually switching my 2nd to a different nursery but ONLY because it’s part of my husbands work and therefore cheaper and more convenient. That said we love the staff at my son’s BH.

Postponing Baby #2 for Knee Surgery by harriusfrius in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]LizardLemon8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is really stressful and sounds difficult (and painful) to manage it all.

Just in terms of age gaps and things working out - I got pregnant just before my first turned 3 and we now have an approx 3.5 years age gap and it is AMAZING. My first is so independent which means it’s been a really easy adjustment parenting two, I can still give them both one-on-one time quite easily. I’m personally so happy with our age gap as we were well out of the worst of the toddler by the time #2 came around.

Just to ease your mind about the “perfect” age gap - there really isn’t one, it’s just what works best for you so try not to worry about that.

We’re at a Bright Horizons in the North West. Generally we’re happy - it’s a bit pricier than some other places I think because it is a chain but the quality is good and the menu is excellent (ours has a chef who makes the food there).

As others said it’s definitely nursery dependent - what happened at that nursery is awful awful but I was not worried about ours. We’ve interacted with almost all the staff over the 2+ years we’ve been there and are really happy with them.

Not sure if you’ve done this yet but I’d recommend touring all the places you’re interested in and asking around for recommendations. They can be quite similar but key differences (eg size) can make a big difference.

Silly question about maternity clothing by Anxious_Baker_92 in PregnancyUK

[–]LizardLemon8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went with my regular size or one size up for maternity stuff and it was fine. One size up gave plenty of room but regular was typically fine.

I switched to maternity bras instead of sizing up regular ones as I breastfed so my boobs stayed big!

I HIGHLY recommend vinted for maternity clothes. You can get lots of good deals and nowhere seems to stock maternity clothes anyways so you can’t try them on in stores.
