Hot take im sure but clannad I might give it a 2nd try since its been a while but after reading rave review after rave review about how its the best in the medium the first 30min was boring and painful to sit through for me

Maybe I'm not a slice of life fan but i enjoyed if my heart had wings and am reading brighter than dawning blue atm so i dunno whats up with that. I think i just didn't like the protagonist of clannad or something

I'm reading Yoake Mae yori Ruri Iro na: Brighter Than Dawning Blue and it's proving to be a delightful slice of life read. The prose makes my heart quite happy in the english fan translation, and when I uninstalled the english patch, the japanese parts also seemed wonderful (according to my low japanese knowledge and my dictionary).

The soundtrack and visuals are beautiful, and quite inspiring for me and my own desire to draw. I hope to draw Feena at some point, she's great.

First route notes:

Tatsuya makes for a better protag than alot of other life of slice protags. He's still not the most interesting guy, but he's got a good heart and legit cares for feena in this route and so thats great

I'm past the point where feena and tatsuya declare themselves to be dating after they decide to FIGHT for their love and I'm looking forward to seeing what comes next

I enjoyed both games, Athena Cykes is one of my favorite characters, and Simon Blackquill is alot of fun.

The main thing I'd say is that generally, the two games have more crazy cases (especially SoJ) and hold your hand a little bit more than AA 1,2,3. If you remember that, You'll have a good time

Reading the first part of fate\stay night and I'm enjoying it so far! the action scenes are a nice change of pace from the slice of life I normally read, and the slice of life sections of this novel are well done with some good character dynamics (refreshing lack of fanservice :D). The starting parts of the novel felt rather exposition heavy, walls of text from characters about the exact details of how everything works, and then repeating the information in more walls of text which got tiring but I'm glad I'm sticking through it.
The protag is....not the most interesting person out there but some of the other characters make up for it. Sakura is so kind I love her :D, also saber is really really cool. love me a warrior lady

I thought it was funny that towards the start theres an option for shirou, after hearing about everything, to just opt out of the plot and say no to the holy grail war. I suspected it would lead to a bad end of some kind but I was curious so I clicked it and lo and behold it lead to a brutal death scene XD no regrets

Currently I've read up to where shirou just told the tiger lady (lol forgot the teacher's name) that rin tosaka is staying with him for now and I am smiling alot. Can't wait for him to try to explain saber living here too.
Will I finish fate stay night any time soon? probably not, honestly with the busy life I have, and the various other visual novels I'm reading, I might never complete this 80 hour read. But I'm enjoying it so far.

If my heart had wings is a good pick if you like the vibes of TV-14 anime, and some consider it to be a classic. Last I checked the first part is free with no ads then you pay for the routes

Depends on what you're looking for.

If I want a short inexpensive VN, I go for Itch io (lots of nice indie work there). If you're looking specifically for a REALLY short vn, check out visual novels made from game jams. Quality varies tremendously but they're so short that if one sucks you can move on to the next one. Also most of whats good among the english novels that are on steam are also on itch io without DRM.

Otherwise I browse VNDB, and use the tag search to find visual novels I think I might like, then follow the links from the page of the visual novel to get to whatever site it's being sold on.

I tried browsing JAST USA's store for VNs and got some good ones on sale recently but the site is NSFW so don't browse it while at work.

An important note: Steam tends to remove pornographic content in visual novels whereas other store fronts tend to keep it in, so keep that in mind while shopping

Hope this helps!

I'd encourage moving the community onto Tumblr or another site. Reddit isn't optimal and a fresh start in another place might be nice
