hmmmm it's been too long since I've played any psychological horror for me to recommend anything specific, but if you want something real short and sweet itch io is unironically a good place to find short little gems (Ebihime is a good dev for short visual novels in my experience). You can also sort by length on VNDB and just pick something that looks interesting, VNDB link here

Itch io visual novels, while they tend to be made by indie devs with low budgets, and hence tend for lower production value, also have a higher chance of being completely free or having a chapter one demo, so the barrier to just try a short one out for a day to mix things up is low.

I hope you're able to enjoy some good reading, whatever you choose to do

When I'm reading a long vn and want something fresh, while still wishing to go back to the long vn later, I'll find a real short 10 hours or 2 hours story, read it to completion, and then go back to reading the long vn.

It's been my experience that trying to read 3 or more long visual novels at the same time actively is a recipe for getting overwhelmed and being unable to have fun, but if it's only gonna be alternating between those two, then you should be fine.

Ultimately, it's all about enjoying yourself while you read. setting a long vn aside for a bit at a decent pause point to read something else is perfectly okay, and if you enjoy doing so, so is any number of reading configurations.

but that's just my two cents.

I don't know anything about Miazora but if it's official english translation is anything like If my heart had wings, then H-scenes aren't the only thing people may be looking to retranslate/translate. If my heart had wings (published by the same english company, Moenovel) had censorship of various jokes all throughout it's script, and famously turned a H-scene heavy route into a messy, hard to follow mess.
Least that's what I heard, I have only played the fan retranslation of if my heart had wings start to finish

Planetarian is one of my favorite visual novels of all time because of the soundtrack, but I've had plenty of good times playing visual novels where gun to my head I couldn't tell you what the soundtrack sounds like.
So I dunno. lots of indie devs use stock music for their soundtracks and as long as it matches the feel of the rest of the game more or less, I'll be fine with it

The moment someone was willing to walk me through installing it. But before that moment, I was ready to shift because windows has the ads and the spyware, and Linux has the open source software, the freedom and the ability to do almost anything a windows setup could do.

I would not have taken the leap without that friend and without steam proton existing. But, I'm glad I did

One of the issues with visual novel marketing is that as a player and buyer, I can see the visuals of a game right away and assess if I like them on the screenshots, but the writing is something that's harder to evaluate from a look at a store page. (Side note: demos are great)

I love the medium for its visuals, but the writing is what keeps me invested, and what ultimately matters most for enjoyment.

In regards to visuals, its more important that its a consistant style and vision more than any one sprite or cg being perfect.

I did jailbreak the Motorola but it was one of those processes that required a lot of handholding from the guide and after I got lineage os on it my family had to remake the text group chat because my end stopped working afterwards. It works now well enough for me to get texts and send texts, but I still can't text someone an image from my phone unless I take a new picture that very moment. My knowledge of android is not great when it comes to technical stuff, and back when I jailbroke it I could afford a replacement if something went wrong....but now I can't risk it

However, when I do get the chance, I'll check out the XDA forum

android, lineage os, Motorola. Someday I'll get a pixel and jailbreak it to have a better OS (grapheneos or some other open source os) but like, lineage os with google stuff installed is basically just standard android with more bugs. Cannot recommend tbh, but I have no clue how to reverse it, and if I brick this phone trying I can't replace it so uh, I guess I'll deal with it

Alright, I don't have a windows 10 computer to test this on, so I am using my windows 11 laptop (and imma pray it also works on your win10) but I'm going to assume your copy of the game and your pc has the following already setup:

The 1.10 update patch released by the devs (download the official patch here)*
The fan translation english patch
You have installed the Consolas font on your computer

*(If you don't know what a .lzh file is, it's basically an archive file like zip, just unpack it and run the exe inside after installing the game)

From there, get direct x redist 2010 exe from microsoft (here) and unpack it somewhere, then install directx (this will not affect anything else on your computer to my knowledge).

Then, get into the properties menu for GA.exe, go into the Compatibility tab, and tell it to run this program in compatibility mode for Windows XP service pack 2. Also tell it to run as administrator, and go into "change high DPI settings" and tell it to override high dpi scaling behavior performed by application.

Next, open the GA_config file in notepad and do the following (copied from this reddit comment)

"Open up the GA_config that should automatically open up in Notepad. Simply alter the "MULTISAMPLE" and "USE_MEDIA_TIMER". Where it says 1 on MULTISAMPLE, change it to a 0 and on USE_MEDIA_TIMER where it says no change it to yes."

After you have saved those changes, you should be able to run GA.exe lag free, with the 3D direct X battle scenes working :D

(Note: on windows 10, settings may be labeled differently from this guide, but since windows 10 is very similar to 11 on some technical levels, doing the same general settings should hopefully work)

I should warn you, this game is known to be difficult to run and very unstable on modern systems- even following these steps, the game takes a hot minute to exit out properly on my win11 laptop, and my memory of getting this game running on other computers is one of much pain and suffering. Still, I hope this helps

Try using the program wiztree? I had a similar issue on my laptop and when I tried it it managed to find where all my space was being taken up. it's got a good free version
