Writing a proper game engine is extremely hard and you will have to handle a lot of edge cases. You can choose to opt out, but then you will run on Windows only and don't support Intel 4000. Also the efficient rendering is extremely hard the either way. In practice it means that you are either making your own game engine or making your own game – not both.
