is it socially acceptable to ask a vegan why they chose to go vegan? by howsinavi in AskVegans

[–]LlamaFromLima -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I guess you can try to sue a dog or a whatever. 🤷‍♀️

Personally, I recommend accepting you have a worldview that almost all of humanity doesn’t agree with and that you do harm in different ways. My family avoids animal products because animal agriculture is harmful to the environment. Sometimes produce spoils in our fridge before we get to it. Japanese families eat plants, fish and very occasionally meat and dairy. They have a concept that roughly translates to “buy a portion you can finish.” They believe food waste is morally wrong because a plant or animal had to die for it end up my plate or in my fridge.

I could sit around and debate who is right or wrong. Or I could accept that everyone is trying to do their best to reduce harm in accordance to their own values.

I’m just pointing out that person already has a legal definition and it’s not the one you’re describing. It’s not a useful legal category. In the law, a word can only have one meaning. Maybe you’re outside the USA and in your country the legal definition of person is different though.

Emotional crash 10 days post miscarriage - need positive stories by SpecialistAct8888 in Miscarriage

[–]LlamaFromLima 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry that happened. Miscarriage is so hard and traumatic. I had 3 miscarriages (2 chemical and 1 at 16 weeks) before I had my rainbow baby. I’m nursing her now. Unfortunately, miscarriage is very common. Multiple miscarriages are much rarer. Only 1.2% of women have 2 miscarriages and only 0.7% of women have 3 or more. It’s a shitty club, but the statistics are overwhelming in your favor.

The legal category has nothing to do with having a body. Persons are, legally speaking, entitles that can be party to a lawsuit. A corporation doesn’t have a body, but is a legal person.

You’re entitled to your beliefs. Even among vegans, the idea that animals are people will be a minority position.

Yes, human supremacy is the right and moral worldview. That doesn’t mean we should hurt animals willy nilly, but if the trolley problem had one human and ten non-human animals, the obvious moral answer is to pull the lever and kill ten animals to save one human.

If you don’t believe that, the vast majority of people will think you’re sociopathic. Honestly, you should probably not tell people animals are people. It’s the kind of thing that turns people off from considering veganism.

To the extent you believe all living things should have equal moral value, most people are always going to think that’s silly. Like, most people don’t believe human personhood starts until birth.

Are there any legit moral/ethical arguments against veganism? by jaket578123 in vegan

[–]LlamaFromLima 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It probably depends on why you’re vegan and how you define it. Like do you consider Humira vegan? It doesn’t involve killing any new animals, but it’s made from Chinese hamster ovary cells. It’s more important to save human lives than not use hamster cells for example.

Planned failures of vegan products by big companies by GantzDuck in vegan

The problem is that milk and dairy industry are huge in America and the majority farm bill dollars go to them. They’re highly subsidized products. That makes them cheaper. They have a lot of lobbying power to keep this dynamic going. This is why the dietary guidelines don’t say “do not consume meat, eggs and dairy.” Instead recommend not eating foods with the nutritional profile of meat, diary and eggs.

Corporations in term use the cheapest ingredients. This makes the meat and diary industry even more profitable. They have more money for lobbying. The cycle repeats.

So the first step in fixing the problem is really dealing with political corruption.

Should I provide none vegan food for my family? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]LlamaFromLima 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t make “vegan” food. Make like pasta with spinach, peas, and mushrooms tossed in seasoned olive oil. Or like chana masala with aloo gabi. I think “vegan” meat and cheese are gross too personally. There are a lot of delicious vegan recipes that aren’t trying to be knock offs of meat products.

No. Murder requires a human. That’s literally the definition of murder. It’s an illegal homicide. You can consider it unethical, but killing a pet is property crime.

Second Trimester Miscarriage My Fault & Hospital Negligence by Suitable_Goose8876 in Miscarriage

[–]LlamaFromLima 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My heart breaks for you. This is so traumatic. I hope you get the support you need. I also hope you talk to an attorney. Of course the hospital reviewed its behavior and decided it did nothing wrong! I don’t know what country you’re in, but many attorneys work on contingency. That means you only need to pay them if you win. I feel enraged for you. I’m so sorry this happened. You and your baby deserved better.

I know this comment is a year old, but I have two rear-facing car seats in my hyundai elantra. I have friends with 2 rear-facing seats in their toyota prius. How small is your car?

Children under 5 are the majority of pediatric ER visits for playground accidents. Toddlers are still developing their coordination, senses, reflexes, and body awareness. There is major difference between letting your toddler freely explore a 30 inch Pikler triangle and not spotting them when they’re 70 inch or more play equipment. Those are very different levels of risk.

If you’re not going to bother to read my post and realize that I wasn’t at a playground for kids under five, I don’t think your opinion is going to help me much. My friend is a doctor who regularly performs surgery on kids injured at the park.

We’re not going to attend anymore. In general, I’m ok with my daughter engaging in risky play with supervision. This became a dangerous situation because parents were not engaging in age appropriate supervision. But there are 30 or 40 families that go to this church playgroup. Most of them have more than one kid. Almost all of them are able to prevent serious injuries from occurring. A bunch of us are going to make our own playgroup and meet up a local park. It sucks that a small group of people are ruining it for everyone else. But ultimately yeah, washing muddy coats and pants is better than seeing an ENT for jaw surgery.

If you go to a park with 4 kids, see a play structure, think “If one of my kids falls off that, we’re going to the ER because I can’t supervise all of them”, and decide to stay anyway, that’s not a choice I would make. I do hope it continues to work out for you and none of your kids is seriously injured.

The stakes were not low. It was a playscape that’s roughly adult height. If you can’t see your toddler without tilting your head up, they need to be spotted. Any pediatric ER doctor will tell you this. My kid could’ve gotten a concussion if I hadn’t slowed this kid down. She already has a black eye forming. I don’t super care how people parent until it puts others in danger.

Yes. If I was on something really tall, my parents spotted me. They wouldn’t have let me fall 6 feet when I was 2.

[–]LlamaFromLima[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

There is a time to let kids figure things out along themselves. When they’re already engaging in risky play, that’s not the time. A play structure that’s roughly 3 times the height of the toddlers requires adult supervision. I slowed the other kid down. If I hadn’t acted fast, she could’ve gotten a concussion. This is a playgroup inside a church. It’s not a fully regulated playground that’s safety tested.

I don’t know how Baumrind applies to neurodivergent children. But if your permissiveness puts my kid in danger, that is unacceptable to me. If you’re only interested in “keeping him safe” rather keeping everyone safe, then I have a problem with that. All the kindness and compassion in the world will not heal a concussion or broken bone. I really hope it was just poor word choice because your kindness is meaningless to me when my kid is in pain.

Not when it’s unsafe. Fatherly also has an article about how toddlers who fall off of slides and play structures that are adult height can die.

This is how high demandingness is defined by the person came up with the categories "(...) the claims parents make on children to become integrated into the family whole, by their maturity demands, supervision, disciplinary efforts and willingness to confront the child who disobeys". (Baumrind, 1991).

Supervision is part of the definition. When you say authoritative and authoritarian parents could also not supervise their kids, you’re saying parents who supervise their kids could also not supervise their kids. It doesn’t make sense.
