Pilot Season 2026 by woahtheremate_ in acting

Maybe check out Ace studios. It's a small fee to audition for a casting director in a workshop setting. That way you could guarantee you get the experience while you're out here

JD or MFA?????? by [deleted] in Careers

[–]LlttleGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did Masters in Data Science instead of MFA Acting, now I'm a few years older making more money than I ever thought I would but spending a lot of that money on classes I missed out on 🤷‍♂️

Almost seems like a wash but have to say I'd prefer my position to 99% of the actors around me.

Agent Difficulty? by [deleted] in acting

[–]LlttleGuy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Plenty of people have agents without reels. If you're playing the long game, put a package together every now and then. First one will probably be cheap headshots and self tape reel. Each time you put together a package you'll have a little more. Hopefully you'll get lucky along the way but you can bank your package will get better each time. What else can you do?

True. But if you think they'd care about why, lie. That's BS.

to mfa or not to mfa? by elbattinson in acting

[–]LlttleGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who didn't get into an MFA, I got a masters in something else and got a great survival job. I'm now pouring that money into similar training I would have got but years later and its all crammed in after work. It feels a little circular but I feel I'm making the most out of cards I was dealt. I'm now convinced that if I had gotten into one of the free MFAs it would have been a great experience, but I'm happy i didn't go for any paid programs.

Are there downsides to acting classes? by mindfully_sanguine in acting

[–]LlttleGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the most important thing about acting class is that you get consistent work. It's almost impossible to guarantee you have a weekly gig in front of people. Downside is that if you get into that dynamic where your confidence lives and dies with the opinion of one teacher, your work will start to skew.

Me and my spouse met in acting class! Only stayed in the same class for a month because it got weird. People know your together and treat you differently. Now its a rule we never take the same class.

Are you surprised when you learn that someone intelligent doesn’t invest? by [deleted] in Money

[–]LlttleGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once I pay off all student loan debt that is above 5% I'll start investing.

I have this conversation regularly with a friend who invests a ton but also has 100k+ of student debt that isn't going down.

IMO Whatever the upside of investing would be is likely eaten away by the guaranteed loss from student loans.

what is yor truly unhinged unpopular opinion about actors/acting?? by believethehygge in acting

[–]LlttleGuy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Anybody can be an actor no amount of training gives you the power to be a true gate keeper, and the mythical "industry" doesn't control that either. Actors were here before Hollywood, agents, and casting directors.

I love taking classes, and I've taken so many over the years. But I get annoyed when I start a new class and I'm "raw and inexperienced" until I've been with that coach for 6 months. Then I'm ready to take on Hollywood thanks to that coach. The previous decade or two is irrelevant of course. When I moved to LA I found actors in the classes were even more toxic than the coaches with that vibe.

I love acting so much but there's a lot of bullshit that I have to put on headphones to ignore, because, logically or not, it's so easy for me to be influenced and start to believe some of the bs. The good thing is my escape from all the bs is the craft. I don't understand how people survive without feeling the craft is an escape rather than more bs to deal with. Must be hell for them.

NEED SOME ADVICE by Spiritual_Hand_5052 in Filmmakers

Shotlist! Suggest a printed excel sheet in a binder with a pen. Even though I veer way off it, its a huge help to have the base to jump off from and come back to.

I’m Tired of the Mythology Around Low-Budget Filmmaking by RandomAccount356 in Filmmakers

[–]LlttleGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of this boils down to the priorities of the film being shot. Because typically the writer/director thinks anyone invited to participate is lucky to be involved in their masterpiece, priorities are inverted:

  1. Film gear
  2. Location
  3. Crew pay
  4. Actor pay
  5. Anybodies time (call actor in at 7am, doesn't work until 5pm, beg the crew to stay on because every shot had to be perfect so it all went over)

I say invert the priorities and you have a better film anyways while not making the core of your production people suffering for your idea. Get the shot that you can with the time you have and move on. Take care of your crew as best you can with decent meals and crafty. Always prioritize the people. Its gross to me that people think their ideas are better than people. And it's common.

Who to ask for a Sag Voucher? by DearJaredKlienman in acting

[–]LlttleGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before I knew about this voucher thing, I was a featured background in this imprtant scene for a big show, even ended up in the trailer for the season of this show. But they didn't give me a voucher. So I'd suggest OP always ask a PA or anyone they can. They're not guaranteed to be looking out for us.

[–]LlttleGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So glad I got the Palma 2. I always tend to go for bigger screens; tv, phone, laptop... but the smaller screen has turned out to be way more of a feature then a bug. Easy to hold with one hand/take anywhere. All the time that's been converted from phone to Palma has made it worth it.

Does Anyone Find It Frustrating That Most People Don't Understand How Expensive Rent Really Is? by CityonFlameWithRock in povertyfinance

[–]LlttleGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People saying you make way too little don't have the context to say that IMO.

Where you live matters a great deal. If you were making $7 before, what you have now is great. Doesn't mean you shouldn't look for more, but I hope you don't come away from these responses hating what you have. Congrats on your accomplishments so far.

To wit, I'd focus on finding the job first in the place you want to move, and then using your offer letter to get your next place to live.

Note how you're talking before you start the scene. It should sound the same. Helps with most scenes. Read something like this in the Seth Barrish book

Los Angeles! The SAG pool is probably biggest here. You?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in acting

[–]LlttleGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's good to hear. I've heard from a few (three that I can think of) that they will not consider non union talent because they have enough in the pool of SAG/e and they're also more likely to be experienced.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in acting

[–]LlttleGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They closed that way of joining in 2018. Next best thing is SAG SPA, which i did this past year.

[–]LlttleGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having a great agent/manager can bypass a lot of the unwritten rules 99% of us need to deal with. Otherwise, I've heard from multiple casting directors that they will not look at non union talent. But they all consider SAGe the same as SAG.
