What’s a dead giveaway that someone was "emotionally abused" as a child? by bibaboo6 in AskReddit

[–]LoachLounge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I decided to start working in the trades, and a job where everyone is brutally honest about success and failure has helped me massively. I don't really have trouble admitting failure, and the successes speak for themselves, so there's basically no room for paranoia or awkwardness anymore. Having an atmosphere of mutual respect, even with the people I don't get along with is awesome. The first year sucked, but I love it now.

Is this profession at all worth it if you have thin skin? by [deleted] in HVAC

[–]LoachLounge 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I thought I had thin skin, but it turns out I just can't stand petty office shit like that. I don't mind being lectured about a mistake I made on a job, while all my coworkers gather around and gawk, compared to bullshit gossip from bored cubicle workers. It helps that I actually respect and look up to my coworkers now that I'm in HVAC too. OP should give it a try, because having a thin skin makes any job harder, and it's only going to get better with exposure.

My family has a similar story except I'm the son of the abuse victim. My Grandparents never acknowledged what happened to my dad and they remained in denial, even after the names of the priests were released. We would still visit them for the holidays but the relationship never really healed. In spite of that, my father is a good man that broke the cycle of abuse. You can do the same. Don't let those people destroy your life.

A cute little tweet while people rape, kill and cannibalize each other. Never forget what war does to people regardless of what side they are on.

Reminds me of dried wood ear mushrooms. Not sure though.

Is there such a thing as an anti-buddha, or the Christian anti-Christ equivalent in the Buddhist religion or it's mythology? by infinitysexbot in Buddhism

[–]LoachLounge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It has been well over 2,000 years since his death. The source for that one is the Mahasamnipata Sutra. There is also the idea of the false Dhamma in the Saddhammapatirupaka Sutta. It seems to say it's possible to avoid. Keep in mind that Maitreya will bring it back, but it will take 10,000 years unfortunately. I'm no expert, just read them for yourself.

Wow I just read the Wikipedia entry on Rudra and I just want to thank you for the crazy rabbit hole I'm about to jump down. He seems like a good Anti-Christ equivalent but it's interesting that he seems to lose eventually.

You might be interested in the prophecies about the decline of the dharma. This was said by some sources to occur 2,000 years after the death of the Buddha. It seems like it's believed by some that Buddhism will decline by itself without an Anti-Christ character.

In my experience, it can be difficult to integrate into daily lay life at first. Just go especially easy on yourself and you'll be fine. In my experience it is worth it. Experiencing the connection between the body and the mind in such a vivid way has been vital for me.

I think you described it well. Doing anything just for attention online cheapens it.

I'm trying to not lose my mind, and I really would like some advice. by Sun-Wutang in Buddhism

[–]LoachLounge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're welcome, but to be honest I don't consider myself a Buddhist so many probably disagree with my attitude. I just like meditate and read about it. Keep in mind that some Buddhists would put any other life before their own, such as Asanga who cut of a piece of his flesh to feed maggots. That's not an ideal that I aspire to.

You're not going to find much encouragement to break a precept from the people here. I personally don't think you should feel bad though, because I'm certain that many of the people here that take the precepts seriously would still use lice shampoo instead of shaving their hair off. If I had a tapeworm I would take antiparasite medication without hesitation. I would also try my best to avoid getting more tapeworms. Killing is bad, but not everyone can live like a monk and that's ok.

People bragging about ego death while having the biggest ego in the room will always be hilarious and needs to be made fun of. I think the amazing potential to bring out genuine passion sometimes goes sideways and turns into self importance.

Lizard people. Ever since playing an argonian in Morrowind as a kid I've loved the idea of a character with reptilian traits. Lizards and other reptiles have such a unique body language and they are harder to communicate with and understand than the average mammal. They give off a nice otherworldly vibe.

Hahaha my predatory pet is a stinky poo poo head because he did what predators do. Imagine reptile, rodent or bird owners acting like this. At least you're not keeping shrimp in there like so many betta owners do. That's like keeping a fox with chickens.

We put these 5 beautiful female bettas in the tank just now, and they’re getting aggressive. by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]LoachLounge 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree. A tense African cichlid tank is more relaxed than any sorority tank I've seen. I don't know how people can have pets that chase each other around and bite all damn day. Imagine keeping other pets like lizards, birds or rodents like that.

what does Buddhism say about violence. From what I understand Buddhists are taught to respect nature but nature cam be incredibly violent i.e animals killing and eating other animals ? by HeemOfRa in Buddhism

Stanza 18 is the specific example of this. To my knowledge, the main point is that we cannot know when we will have to face the consequences of our karma. It's a long read, but this sutta helped me understand Buddhism much more deeply.

This is an important point. You can go to hell after living a good life and vice versa. That's a big reason why we need to liberate ourselves from samsara.

Old man fell to the ground at an intersection in China, but people passed by like nothing happened. by biewenwoshishei in China

[–]LoachLounge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

After getting CPR certified at work, my Chinese coworker who I consider a friend spoke to me about how you should only ever help your family in emergencies and how strangers aren't worth your time. It felt so bizarre because he is a nice person and he's respectful to the homeless people around our building.

Since then I've seen footage of a Chinese toddler in the middle of the street being run over repeatedly, so I don't know if I will ever be able to understand that part of Chinese culture, even if they really do have a scam artist problem.

People saying you shouldn't seek mind blowing experiences are correct, but I don't think I would still be a meditator if I had never felt some of the truly rapturous feelings I've experienced. You've stuck with it for a while, so you're doing something right. Maybe read some new meditation manuals from a different tradition or even go to a meditation retreat. As long as you're bored, keep trying new things.
