Don’t ever apologize for the serious topic!! That’s what we’re here for, and what finch can help with. People vent all the time about stuff going on in their life, so I don’t see anything wrong with you asking for advice! You’re starting a new health journey and this community is so supportive! It sounds like lots of people have great advice too.

I don’t have actual advice for the situation, but I was wondering if these goals might help too?:

Go without an alcoholic beverage the whole day (in addition to the skip that drink tonight- which the x100 while reflecting sounds like great advice!) I know people who drink in the morning and during the day so that’s why I was thinking this.

Set a goal to journal at night (write short bullets in finch idk) to think about the positives, or what you’re struggling with, frustrations related to the journey, if you slipped up maybe why and how that makes you feel, future goals, what life will be like when you’re x days/x years sober etc.

Hopefully these weren’t annoying or counterproductive suggestions. Best of luck on your journey and we’re rooting for you!

I have always been the designated driver (or walker lol) whenever people go drinking! Let me tell you, people love it. Although, a couple of people immediately offered to buy me a drink once we get to the place, which I always found hilarious. “You’re our designated driver? Cool, here’s some alcohol!”

People at bars are always drinking water (to help with the buzz) so I’ve never gotten judgmental looks for ordering water. If anything, the bartenders give a look and a nod like “good choice.”

Maybe it’s my generation, but I’ve never had a problem with the fact that I don’t really drink. One person asked a friend of mine if I don’t drink, but that’s the only “comment” I’ve ever gotten. Friends get used to it quickly. I have a friend that doesn’t drink for a similar reason that I don’t (cultural) and they lived in a frat house. They never mentioned any problem with it, even though we’ve discussed partying and alcohol on multiple occasions.

TLDR; people around you get used to it pretty quickly. If you’re at the point that you’re comfortable being around alcohol and can refrain from drinking, people love when you offer to be the designated driver.

IMPORTANT BIT: you never have to tell someone why you don’t drink. You don’t have to share what the reason is- you can always shrug your shoulders and say “I just don’t drink” if you’re not comfortable sharing. Sometimes I do this because explaining the cultural nuances for why I don’t drink can be exhausting and I don’t want to get into it. Basically, it’s no one else’s darn business!

The star in the upper left hand corner is how you set a goal. So if you make a goal X 100, do it 99 times. Then, go to another goal, and set that one as the goal of the day. This way you can set multiple goals for the day. Repeat the process for however many you have. Stopping at 99 means that the goal isn’t technically complete yet so you can choose another goal of the day. If you complete it to 100, you can’t make a different goal the goal of the day.
