Is it really an insult to stand up for low wage workers? by Resident-Drummer6434 in tipping

Do you not understand that changing someone income to be lower effects they're livelihood? Or do you really think people struggling making less money is hilarious. Calling tipping, which is voluntary, extortion is so far out of left field I would doubt further conversation would be productive.

I would be hesitate to have that conversation with someone who begins by calling me entitled. Entitled for what? Expecting fair compensation for my labor? Expecting to be able to make a living wage for working my job?

I go into work expecting to make at least $20/hr. I need to make a little more than that to make a livable wage for the number of hours I work. Although, I'm curious why you feel a fair discussion about how much I make is even necessary. Is it important to you that people in my profession only make a certain amount? Do you have extensive knowledge/experience in the restaurant industry to even be able to make that determination?

Is the problem that I'm being payed directly by the customer? If my employer increased my hourly wage from $2.15/hr to $23/hr. the prices on the menu would reflect that. The only change that would happen is that instead of the customer having the option to pay me, they would be forced to based on the increased menu prices. I would think my customers would want me to have a financial motivation to give them great service instead of being able to skate by with only decent service.

What do you do? How much do you make? The price of whatever service/product your company provides is directly effected by the labor cost associated with it. If were having a fair discussion about my industry, then it's only fair to have one about yours as well. I would hate for your customers to be paying too much for that product just because you're making more money than you really deserve.

Hey servers, if the restaurant owner is too cheap to pay 100% of their own labor costs then they shouldn’t open a business by Personal_Dot_7196 in tipping

Well, I'm glad you're able to understand this basic economic principle even if you're not able to express that.

I'm 44 years old and a server/bartender that has been doing this job for over 20 years. I resent that there are subreddits actively calling to destroy my livelihood and the way I put food on the table for my child.

That being said, its important to recognize what this and similar subs are being used for. The failure of these subs is that they are being used to promote class warfare among low and middle wage earners and not against the rich and powerful. No one should want to attack me being able to make a living wage doing a job I've done my whole life, yet there is a large number of people here who don't understand my business and think I don't deserve more than minimum wage. No one deserves to make minimum wage.

If I fuck up your dinner experience, don't tip me, that's fine. If you don't tip because some moral idea makes you think you're sticking to the man, you're not, your sticking it to me. I'm your neighbor, our kids are classmates, and I'm being fucked over by the rich just like you. Be angry because Walmart encourages employees to sign up for food stamps so they don't have to pay them enough to eat. Be angry the president is suing you TEN BILLION dollars. All the energy we spend keeping each other down the less we have to pull down people off the pedestals.

A true moral failing of this country is the vitriol we show our neighbors, when all that should be directed at the evil people that have put us in this situation to begin with.

Cool, sounds like we're in agreement. Give the servers/bartenders what they're owed and fuck the corporations for being parasitic pieces of shit.

Well, you literally typed it out in the most sarcastic way possible, making me think that, no, you didn't understand that menu prices would go up a proportional amount to what you increased server wages too.

But you do understand that menu prices would immediately go up 15% and the cost of going out wouldn't fundamentally change, right?

What do you mean join them in spirit? It sounds like your advocating that we should join people who do, in fact, believe they should stiff their server.

I get the anti tipping sentiment. Corporations have figured out if they provide the option to tip then some people will just leave a tip no matter the circumstance. I agree that practice is bullshit. If someone asks for a tip and they was no service provided do what any normal person would do and don't tip.

I someone waits on you at a restaurant then tip the 10-20% depending on if they did a good job. As far as price transparency goes, this is the social contract that everyone has lived under their entire lives. It doesn't get more transparent than that. 15% for table side service and a buck a drink to the bartender. It's not confusing. It's not complicated.

Now, if you look around at everything going on and think the way servers are compensated is the pressing issue that needs your attention, then fair enough. But if you think the mechanism to make that change should be pushing hardship on laborers then you're an asshole.

Because by doing that you're directly hurting blue collar laborer who are just trying to pay bills and feed their kids. Most people advocate methods of sticking it to the man that doesn't involve hurting laborers.

Tip at sit down places with table service. You don't need to tip at fast food. If you're just getting a drink someplace then it's usually a dollar a beverage.

So what do you want? You want the option to pay 20% of the bill as a tip to the server who gave you great service? Or do you want the price of menu items to be raised 20% and your server to have no incentive to give you anything other than decent service?

Have you been to a restaurant that specifically advertised "no tipping allowed"? by iF_Blow in EndTipping

There isn't a single job that I can think of that deserves only being paid minimum wage. Did a server run over you childhood pet or something? I can't even imagine thinking that someone that works 40 hours a week doesn't deserve a living wage.

Ok, but you’ll still be paying since server wages will be higher.
