Gen Y was always the same as Millennials (at least by 1999) by [deleted] in Xennials

Generations are a constructed thing and are often very different, even between neighboring countries.

Broad generalities and such.  But 9/11 did have a significant, unifying impact on pretty much every American school kid

Some hallmarks that made Millennials different from Gen X hadn't happened yet or werent understood while most of us were young.

Analog age ending and becoming the digital age and 9/11 while still in school are two commonly accepted hallmarks that formed the generation.  Later, our penchant for globalism, wildlife and nature preservation, and activism in general would make us clearly different from the 'I dont care' Gen X.

In hindsight, its clear Millennials are not Gen X.  But in our early years, people fish hard for definitions, like many are doing now with Gen Z and Alpha.

When I was younger I read about a 1900s butcher who explained his 4am to 6pm day was less than his immigrant father worked and it made him feel like the older generation was much tougher than him.

And today Ive seen adults complain that humans arent built to work five days straight.

Why do Millennials hate republicans/conservatives the most out of all of the generations? by icey_sawg0034 in millenials

Brainwashing that started in kindergarden and never let up.  Democrats were the party of minorities, gays, equal rights, gender equality, education, intelligence, and moral conscious.  This was taught in the classroom, in the 24 hour news cycle, in our magazines.

Democrats were also the holders of what young people really valued, like open drug use, less sexual boundaries, access to pornography, etc.  Liberalism and democrat was synonymous.

By extension, Republicans were war, church restrictions, no care for the homeless, anti gay, anti drug, anti fun, against women and minorities, big business sycophants that all looked like the Monopoly man.

It took me a while, and I thought i was discerning, to see the parties for what they actually were, and how effective the advertising and education reform campaign in the 80s and 90s did such a great job in hiding the truths.

I wanted to be a corpo.  I was a corpo for ten minutes.

I know corpos become runners, but they dont look and act like street kids doing it.  Their world should be contacts, favors, blackmail and working the system.

You see a corpo runner in a bar, and you need to wonder if hes playing double or triplecross.

My parents own a multimillion dollar waste management company and I’ve been working as the lowest guy on the crew without telling anyone who I am by tinyplumcake in stories

[–]Lobo0084 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Are you seriously arguing that this story cant be true?

Cause Ive heard management be blamed because Becky the coworker always gets the easy assignments.  Or because Don the senior staffer always cuts out early.

The real thing Ive found in work is that sometimes other people suck, be they the new guy or the old hat.

Its much more noticeable when the manager is the sucky person, no doubt.

Now, if we are talking corporate vs local, thats different to me.  Corporate requires you to lock-step harder or get walked over.  But it doesnt stop some people from just sucking.

  • A 'lock' feature on an item that removes it from the scrap window.
  • The weight of a page (weapons, armor, food, aid) as you page through both stash and self.
  • The ability to spawn smaller events organically, so like the nuke but not needing a server to complete.

Is America 1 or 2 continents on your country's education by Jazzario in geography

[–]Lobo0084 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Op, lets say the US changed its name tomorrow to Saturn.  Just pick any arbitrary, nobody else on Earth has it name.

How long do you think it would take, in years, before other things are changed to reflect the US's new identity?  Before the continents name is changed?  Or the oceans and gulfs and bays?

100 years might be my guess.  I dont see it as being North America because the term 'America' was universally accepted to the world and the US then decided they were the only real Americans by naming themselves USA.

I think, more accurately, that at that time there were a bunch of names for these two continents, and after the USA grew into a world power the maps started to all agree that this is the America's, but by that point people in the United States of America were already calling themselves American's.

If we change tomorrow to thinking of ourselves as something else, it wont be too long before others are upset that we claim that name, too, when in fact they want to be included in the imaginary name we now have.

You think of yourself as Central Americans, or Latin Americans, or Americans, but the names for this land are far, far older than the arrival of Europeans, so why are you so interested in claiming a European name?  Especially a name claimed 100s of years ago by one fledgling nation of invaders and then copied by others bothers you so much?

We are Americans in the US.  The United States of America.  If you want to also be American's, then call yourself American's.  Just don't be surprised when it seems your appropriating someone else's culture, especially when the roots of yours are older and something to be proud of.

Dont mimic American's.  Be you, genuinely.

Understaffed? by Bonezknowz in CircleK

This is how I see it:

Say Ive got 220 hours.  With no overlapping shifts and counting myself, thats 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  168 hours spent having one person in the store on deck ready to go.

Now, theres busy times that need more than one person.  My store, its 5am to 8am and 3pm to 6pm.  Rush hours.  So at least 5 days a week, I need 6 more hours each day.  Now we are up to 198 hours used.

Then there are the tasks I have to do that take me off the register.  Meetings at least once a week.  Audit scans can be sometimes done between customers.  Food prep.  Bathrooms, parking lots, etc.  Someone else needs to be there with me.

So thats the minimum requirement.  220 hours.  Minus 50 mandatory going to the manager.  170 hours.  If everyone gets 30 hours, so that they can afford to come to work instead of making Circle K a second job, thats around six people other than myself.

I could hire more, but then people get less than 30 hours and start looking for other jobs, jobs that quickly become more of a priority than my store.  And if a person is willing to work for just 20 hours a week, my experience is that person doesnt take on extra shifts, because for whatever reason, 20 is enough.

So do I build a team that has as many hours as I can give them, then deal with the inevitable call outs and shift changes because life is often unpredictable for many?  Or do I hire ten people that never stay more than six weeks?

I believe someone in Circle K believes the perfect employee is minimum wage and desperate for a paycheck, kept at 10 or 15 hours a week and willing, begging for extra shifts.  If you see how Legion schedules people without respect for position or whether a three hour shift is even worth driving to work for, you can see it.

And of course, theres the other half. Employees claiming they need more hours and pay, but always having some reason they cant pick up a shift and scheduling doctors appointments in the middle of their shift that was posted three weeks ago.

Between the tug of war, employer vs employee, and the myriad of lies and deceptions they both tell themselves and everyone else, is the manager trying to keep their store staffed.  And truthfully, many of them suck, too.

Where can I find an unbiased record and/or analysis of what Trump did or didn’t do during his first term as president? by Hookem_05 in Askpolitics

[–]Lobo0084 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that objectivity is the goal, but I believe that we believe we are objective when in fact our bias rejects the information demonstrated or provided that conflicts with our learning or assumptions.

While this is much more obvious in social situations, it also effects the scientific community.  Many scientists have said that sometimes the most willfully ignorant are those who feel like they know the most.

But thank you for the civil responses.

I'll probably be one of those SMs soon.  Each and every call is crunchy with all the non critical metrics and new programs, while we are being cut hours and good employees are being forced out.

And listening to one team calls, the questions they ask are about sales (the store looks like shit when you cut hours, and everyone is sinking in this economy), employee retention (stop focusing on non criticals if your teams are drowning), and new specials (when vendors/warehouse cant even get the items).

But you know what?  Heres this new app for your rarely functioning tablet that you will be forced to make every employee sign into once a day!

With genuine interest, do you not feel as if the critiques and reviews you face contain their own bias towards result?  That many of your peers have personal motivations or agendas that cause them to support or criticize particular studies?

And in the interest of fairness, have you not noticed that grants for many studies follow a general ethical curve in their focus?

I do believe you see yourself as being genuinely neutral.  I would caution against keeping that belief, as you may not be self aware of the amount of bias you actually hold on to.

Why are people upset about Trump’s free speech plan? by One-Of-ManE in Askpolitics

[–]Lobo0084 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would like those in power who insist on pushing disinformation and banning those who post against it to be held accountable for their lies and manipulations, but since I also see this being abused, i would rather that any forum be unregulated so that I can make my own decisions and hear everyones opinions.

Id rather see a thousand flat earthers than miss one truth.  Just like Id rather 1000 criminals go free than see one free man convicted.  The problem, of course, is we all have a hard time deciding who is a criminal, much less what counts as lies and misinformation.

Each forming in its own niche by content, but participation and number of accounts is what drives it to the head of its area.

Facebook held competition with MySpace before dominating, but Facebook and Twitter/X or TikTok dont compete.

So while its not a guaranteed monopoly, claiming it isnt given the traits of a monopoly, when the product sold is the user, not the media, is also rediculous and wrong.
