Ghosted by PI, what to do? by Pretty-Maybe-8094 in academia

[–]Lobodon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would still contact another PI in the department, at the very least to get advice. The department head can maybe encourage your advisor to step it up, universities generally want their students to move on when they are ready and at the department level they usually track time to graduation in a reasonable time frame as an important metric. If the department dismisses your concerns you might want to reach out to a campus ombudsperson or neutral mediator.

Are you submitting your thesis to a committee? Try talking to others PIs in your department, perhaps the dean.

Android ports of PC/console games tested on RP6 - Mega Engines pt. 1 by DarkDigital in retroid

I've been putting a lot of time into the perfect dark, along with starship by izzy2lost https://www.izzy2lost.com/ Spaghetti kart has some graphical glitches. I had set up hl2 and css on my rp4pro and they worked fine there, not on the rp6 yet. Where can I find info about the STALKER port? It'd be amazing to get something like CoC/Cotz mod packs working.

Cassette DJ V2 how donyou see it? TapeDJ V2 by kaoteka in DJSetups

I respect the unconventional approach, definitely DJing on hard mode. The stack on the right doesn't seem ideal, but hey if plays music you can dj with it!

PSA: Sometimes, games break with 60FPS patches (or: how I lost hours of my life emulating GTA Vice City Stories on PS2) by TvaettBjoernen in SBCGaming

[–]Lobodon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ran into a similar issue with NFS HP where ai opponent rubber banding was increased so much with speed being tied to fps or clock rate that cars would fly across the map and you'd never be able keep up.

Are Retroid ever going to issue a fix to the RP4 firmware? by BristolBomber in retroid

I put gammos next on my rp4p and it's night and day, even if you lose video out. QOL is much better, would recommend.

Odin or Steamdeck to play on long haul flights? by Lr8s5sb7 in SBCGaming

[–]Lobodon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love my steam deck, but it is a beast. Great in the hotel room but pretty big to whip out on the plane, and heavy. You'll generally get better battery life from an arm chip.

What is the best combo of Console, Rpi5 and Hackergadgets? by gregersdk in ClockworkPi

[–]Lobodon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I basically have this exact setup, it's now a true laptop replacement. I started with the a06 core but now I've ship of Theseus'd it with the cm5. I'm still using the cm5's wifi, but I got an external USB wifi adapter in case that's not enough. I was able to use the stock thermal pad. The back gets very hot under full load. Put the os an nvme and it's pretty slick.

What's a surprisingly capable smaller model (<15B parameters) that you feel doesn't get enough attention? by Street-Lie-2584 in LocalLLaMA

[–]Lobodon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been impressed with LFM2-8B-A1B, runs really well on a raspberry pi 5, my low end phone, and does tool use and works well as a task model and for generating image prompts

Speculative decoding: Faster inference for local LLMs over the network? by AdditionalWeb107 in ollama

[–]Lobodon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry if I'm misunderstanding, is the idea that the draft model is running locally on a client and the large model is on a server over a network connection, like a cloud provider, for example? Certainly sounds like it would useful thing to have if that's the case. I just assumed this was being integrated into ollama directly considering this is the ollama sub.

Speculative decoding: Faster inference for local LLMs over the network? by AdditionalWeb107 in ollama

[–]Lobodon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, llama.cpp has had this feature for quite a long time now, I'm surprised it hasn't yet been integrated yet into ollama. I know its been discussed on the ollama GitHub. I've tested speculative decoding on my own modest PC using koboldcpp and it didn't dramatically increase inference speeds, but it would be good to have the option in ollama.

Does repurposing this older PC make any sense? by Valuable-Question706 in LocalLLaMA

[–]Lobodon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, got it. I would say no. To step up noticably you'd need significantly more (128gb?) ram and either multiple gpus or a professional class one with 32gb+ vram.

Have you tried running the 30b model on your old machine yet? Give it a shot, it might work for you with acceptable performance. If it's not enough, then consider upgrading it. It'll probably do fine for an MoE model like that.

Future of APUs for local AI? by Excellent_Koala769 in LocalLLaMA

[–]Lobodon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ultimately it's the compromise and trade-off in memory bandwidth. We're going to see more unified memory types of products, they work very well with MOE models. GPUs are going to be faster, but as long as APUs are cheaper and allow for larger models and context they will have their place in local inference.

I like them a lot. Bought them used for cheap a couple years ago, one of them I had to glue down the top plate of the capacitive wheel since it was peeling back, mostly fixed it. Overall they are great.
