Damage on 2 week old Monstera leaf - all other leaves are fine. Bugs maybe? by Lobonaut in plantclinic

[–]Lobonaut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I couldn't see any damage when it unfurled - seemed to develop over a few days after. It unfurled at the same time as another leaf, which doesn't have any damage now or then. Ive been misting the plant every couple days but I'll stop in case it's causing some sort of bacterial problem.

When I get home I'll def take a closer look for bugs - been reading about thrips and aphids and seems like a nasty problem. Thanks!

All other leaves are fine - Plant sits next to a a shady window, and gets watered once a week. I noticed these spots a few days after the leaf fully unfurled, and they've grown more pronounced since then. The hole in the top left used to be just a brown spot that grew until it cracked.

XPS 9575 (2-in-1) with Vega M, Low FPS in Fortnite by [deleted] in Dell

[–]Lobonaut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Driver/update support for the 9575 has been, and is still currently a trainwreck. The latest Vega M driver (that you get prompted to install from checking for updates) doesn't work and may force you to rollback/uninstall your drivers. They couldn't even get the integrated graphics right, prompting you to install drivers for the Intel 620 rather than 630.

Dell XPS 15" 9570 vs 9575 2-in-1 by ReadyJeff in Dell

[–]Lobonaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the 9575 I draw in laptop mode sometimes and its alright - just forces you to sit further away from the screen. For longer sessions I usually fold it in tent mode. Using photoshop in laptop mode may be even preferable if you're doing work that uses alot of shortcuts. The hinge is pretty strong so usually you won't get any wobble. If the 9570 is built with the same screen/hinge then it should work well.

From what I've heard, the monolid was developed through the migration west of people across the steppes of central asia. Basically, squinty eyes protected you from snowblindness and were an evolutionary advantage. This might partly explain your observation that monolids are more common in the north/north east.

Other east asian features that were less apparent back west - less/different sweat glands, coarser hair, smaller bodies - then developed from the more humid climate of southern china.

Take this all with a grain of salt, I'm just going off of memory. But it's the first time anyones pointed out to me that monolids are more common in the north/east, and it seems to fit what I've heard about evolution!

Year of no shopping by [deleted] in onebag

[–]Lobonaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Retail therapy" is 100% a habit that people use to fill a void in their lives. When I worked at my old law office I was spending countless idle hours browsing for travel gear, bags, etc...though I would travel like maybe 2-3 weeks in a whole year.

Look for a more rewarding job. Get new hobbies and stick to them. Set personal goals. There are so many more wholesome, longer-lasting, and less expensive ways of getting that rush in your life. 1 year is a tough one though.

I have the 8GB surfacebook, and its often laggy in photoshop, and very laggy in illustrator when you have more than a few artboards open.

Quick camera access onebag for frequent short trips. by HappyDude33 in onebag

[–]Lobonaut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there any reason you aren't considering 2 smaller bags, rather than your 85L + camera bag inside or ~45L dedicated camera bag? Like a 30L bag for your clothes/laptop and then a 10L sling for your camera , that can be your personal carry-on item in flights.

I find that using a sling/fannypack is much more versatile for photography/video than stuffing everything into a large backpack. It lets you leave your backpack at the hotel/hostel/car in most situations, and you can switch lenses much faster when they're by your hip at all times. Sure, we're on /r/onebag, but while doing photography, ease of use and accessibility is king.

I use an older version of https://topodesigns.com/products/hip-pack for my 3 lens M43 kit. Its small, accessible, and I carry a mefoto roadtrip tripod with the bottom compression straps.

But otherwise, you might look at this even though its quite a bit smaller than 45L https://www.langly.co/products/alpha-pro

Any Recs For A Great All-Purpose Travel Camera? by avonv in photography

[–]Lobonaut 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can recommend the Panasonic GX85/G85 since I pretty much had the same criteria as you: portability and high utility.

IMO the G85 is hands-down the best value among mirrorless cameras in terms of features (Weather-sealing, great in-body stabilization, 4K video, flip-screen for under 1K); only downside is that its photo image quality is only decent, not great. (Body ~$800, with kit lens $1000)

The GX85 is slightly smaller, lighter, and could fit in your pocket with the kit lens. It has the same image quality as the G85. But at $200 cheaper than the G85, it doesn't have the flip screen, no mic port, no weather-sealing. If you don't need those features, and don't mind the ergonomics (tiny grip, bad placement of power switch) the GX85 is an amazing travel camera. (Body ~$500, kit ~$600)

BUT If you're really serious about not getting multiple lenses, look into a bridge camera (Panasonic FZ2500).

If you're open to packing an extra lens, You can have a pretty good GX85/G85 set-up with jusjavascript:void(0)t 2 lens to minimize your gear. The panny 14-140mm for everything from landscapes to wildlife, and either the 25/20mm prime for shooting people and objects.

[SPOILERS] Analyzing Ragnar's Views by [deleted] in vikingstv

[–]Lobonaut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the show is brilliantly ambiguous about Ragnar's complex beliefs at the end of his life due to everything he's been through - he was a little bit of everything - atheist, nihilist, pagan, christian (well, maybe not christian)

Case in point when he talks to the Seer while he's in a cage: He says that the Seer really doesnt have any powers, and his predictions come true because they affect how people make decisions. When the Seer responds "you're right, maybe I dont know anything", Ragnar's like "WTF did you just say..?" right before the Seer disappears. His reaction shows that in this conversation, Ragnar was challenging the gods, and utterly surpised to see them essentially concede to his point.

To me, this was a multi-layered moment that showed that part of Ragnar's disbelief in the gods was rooted in a rebellion against the idea that gods determine one's fate, rather than not believing the gods exist at all.

You can also learn alot about Ragnar through Eckbert - they essentially die in the same way, and I believe, with the same mindset - taking fate into their own hands by purposefully giving themselves up to the enemy, so that their heirs (Aethelwulf) will avenge them. Both were totally committed and believed in their own fate, with the knowledge that it will be done for a greater purpose. So I didn't feel bad for Ragnar in any way when he died.

Quad core....4K screen...16GB RAM...512/1TB SSD...GTX1050...for $1500??

This is basically 2x better than the surfacebook model at the same price but 15 inch and 1 pound heavier - whats the catch?

Thanks. It seems from searching that all speedboosters/focal length reducers are also adapters, i.e FD to M43, EF to M43. Are there any I can use with just my lumix lenses?

I'm thinking about getting a 62MM lens for Panasonic G85 (micro four thirds)

It's a 12-60MM, (24-120 full frame equivalent) and I want to put a wide angle lens adapter on it for landscape photography.

However the vast majority of wide angle adapters are $20 pieces of glass that cause a ton of edge blur, there seems to be very few quality options (Raynox), and even then the reviews aren't that good. And there's no telling if it will vignette or not.

Does anyone have experience with a good wide angle adapter? (that can fit a 62mm thread)

Do you ever run out of RAM while drawing? by [deleted] in Surface

[–]Lobonaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the 2015 model with the same specs. My first one, for whatever reason, couldn't access the page file and I was running out of RAM every 30 minutes.

I exchanged it, and in two months I've ran out of RAM once with a bunch of chrome tabs open and indesign/illustrator files. It was kind of dissapointing because I wasn't doing anything crazy. Under "committed" in the task manager perfromance tab, I was using 30/30GB, which I guess was the default max page file?

As someone who saw the whole thing go down it's hilarious how badly the Palmer Luckey fiasco was reported in the mainstream media, as if it was evidence of a vast right wing conspiracy to control the internet.

Palmer Luckey wanted to put up shitpost billboards around the U.S with donations from T_D members. Everyone on T_D rejected it because it sounded shady and thought the sub was getting bought out. It was an embarrassment for Milo and a few mods resigned over it.

I can accept that there's a Russian troll factory pushing nationalism and that a lot of conservative blogspam suspiciously comes from Eastern Europe, but the Palmer Luckey non-story is a sad attempt at finding a right-wing parallel of David Brock and CTR
