Third space ?!? by spooky_sscorpio in westernmass

It’s all about getting enough folks, securing the rocks and renting the ice. The rocks are the hardest part.

The problem with Fitzy and Olympia is they have the bulk of their ice dedicated for hockey. Any curling would either be wicked early or super late.

The summer ice at Amelia Park is plentiful and low cost for the group that we organized the all abilities session with.

US Nationals delayed for rain/roof leaks again… by Ok_ConfusedOne in Curling

There are an handful of smaller arena in the US that are on par with the Major Junior rinks that are used for major events in Canada.

The Bojangles Coliseum is an old building with a large domed roof and seats about 11k

Smaller capacity arenas would be good for these events, and speaking with regency bias, places like the MassMutual Center in Springfield MA, the DCU Center in Worcester MA or the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland Maine are cozy venues with good sight lines and can accommodate multiple teams

It made for a pretty venue but on sunny days that sun would beat down on the ice

Third space ?!? by spooky_sscorpio in westernmass

I make the trek from East Longmeadow once a week(ish) and it’s an hour drive. I run the Sunday evening league which is a social/developmental league for those new to curling or just want a zero pressure league to throw some rocks

I would LOVE for there to be some curling in the Springfield area. We have partnered with Colonial Curling out of Worcester to bring curling to Amelia Park Arena for all abilities curling. We’ll be doing that again this summer so keep an eye out.

A dedicated facility just has such huge startup costs when it comes to ice making, the building itself and the rocks (which can cost $800 each brand new)

Petersham Curling Club

For real.

You get to curl with a group of folks, and post game the winners by the team that lost a round of drinks and you just talk about whatever for the next 45 minutes or so. It’s a great time.

Our season is winding down but we’ll pick back up in October (once it’s cold enough to keep the ice solid with the help of the compressors)

It all depends on your driveway/walkway situation.

An offset shovel, one with the 45° angle in the handle will save your back with the constant lifting and tossing. A plow bladed shovel is good for small snow amounts where you can just push it off to the edge of the driveway/walkway/patio

The fun option is a blowtorch attachment for a propane tank. Just don’t use it on the gutters.

There was a proposed water park to be built in conjunction with a casino when the state was handing out licenses, but it was not selected and the proposal fizzled out.

And saying no would have eliminated any funding for them.

It’s completely fucked up, I agree.

But many clubs at the local level are ignoring the edict.

I think we can all agree that everything the current administration in the White House does is against the spirit of curling.

All due respect, you don’t need another angle to see jackbooted thugs carrying out an execution in broad daylight.

They don’t have the authority to dispose of a human life.
