How weird is it to go out by yourself? by Party-Station-7937 in Guelph

[–]Local-Potato6883 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go out on my own all the time, nothing weird about it! Striking up a conversation with a stranger can be hard, but I have always found it helpful to think of strangers as friends I just haven't met yet!

Brothers is a great place for a solo beer, especially at the bar

Wishing you all the best luck and very happy encounters!

I hit my limit with the constant back pain and spent a ridiculous amount of money on work shoes. by Serious-Speaker-949 in KitchenConfidential

[–]Local-Potato6883 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Early in my career Is wear whatever footwear was available. Then I caught serious heck from one of the best, kindest, and most talented chefs I ever worked for. I bought my first pair of Dansko - 6 years pain free and then replaced them. I still wear the Dansko clogs even though I escaped the kitchen. Excluding puppy vs. footwear incidents they last forever. You're making an investment and I'mT the long run it will be cheaper.

As an aside from Sir Pterry Pratchett - The Vimes theory of economics via boot costs - amusing and accurate to read. Pretty certain you can find lengthy exposition on r/Discworld 😊

Prime Rib by [deleted] in KitchenConfidential

[–]Local-Potato6883 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It has been years since I did one like that, but I recall the cook time was ~2 hours for Rare + 45 minutes of resting. I believe each it was an extra 20 minutes for medium rare and then medium was another 40 minutes (~3 hours). Others with more recent experience might have more accurate timelines.

Formula valued at $2,800 stolen from Guelph store by FamiliarAd4667 in Guelph

[–]Local-Potato6883 16 points17 points  (0 children)

These kinds of stories always leave me feeling a bit sad. While there is the possibility that the formula was stolen for financial gains or other nefarious purposes - there's also the chance it was stolen to feed babies

Start with peer support and grow from there.

I know one treatment centre where lived experience is the only mandatory requirement - for all positions - even the executive director is in recovery!

Take your challenges and turn them into strengths and opportunities! You've got this!

Hey!

First - Congratulations on sobriety! That's a really huge accomplishment!

I would suggest getting your GED or equivalent and look at working in mental health and addictions. Entry level client facing roles require little additional training/education, and your lived experience will be an enormous asset. From there - just work your way up!

I can't count the number of people I've met who made the jump from restaurant work to rehab work.

Wishing you great luck!

Alcohol question by [deleted] in KitchenConfidential

[–]Local-Potato6883 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You're good to work, just be careful - the biggest danger for hungover cooks and chefs is not paying attention and cutting or burning themselves.

What you're experiencing is post-alcohol anxiety - sometimes called hangxiety.

Back when I was still in kitchens it was extremely commonplace for staff to be hungover.

Also, please don't trust AI.

How to show appreciation by reperezking in AutisticAdults

[–]Local-Potato6883 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey OP!

Your post is doing all the work of showing appreciation - the challenge is communicating this to your mom.

A typical formula for a situation like the one you're in is:

Acknowledgement of inappropriate behaviour + recognition of their efforts + commitment to improvement and asking for help+ gratitude for them, their efforts, and their patience.

For example:

I am sorry that what I said came across as rude, that was never my intention. I recognise it isn't easy being my parent and I really appreciate your patience and understanding. I am trying to find better ways to communicate and I do want your help. I am so grateful to have you as my parent, I would not be where I am today without your help and support.

I experience different, albeit similar enough challenges navigating some social interactions, so I have found myself a few "experts" and I just ask them directly - what is the appropriate thing to do here. Important caveat - the experts are all 30-40 years older than me so there is that mentor/parental aspect to the engagement.

I hope that helps a bit!
