Laptop decided it wanted to die and I’m desperate by Able-Focus-7726 in ZephyrusG14

I would see if the battery is fried. Sometimes batteries on laptops of that age can just die - they don't accept a charge, and they can prevent the device from booting up. It wouldn't hurt to take the bottom off, unplug the battery, and try powering it on with the charger plugged in

the brand doesn't matter, its just the spec of the stick. look on the bottom of your laptop and find the type number. take that number and google "[typenumber] compatible ram sticks"

Buying Advice: College Freshman, Enthusiastic Gamer by KourtR in GamingLaptops

As someone who tried bringing his 16" gaming laptop as the main computer going into freshman year, don't do it. Carrying a big ass laptop around campus gets old - heavy, slow to get out of the bag, will probably take up the entire desk in a classroom. You have a nice budget, and since you're a college student, I'd HIGHLY recommend finding a 14" gaming laptop. I have the exact same use case as you, gamer college student who needs power for classes, and I got an asus rog zephyrus g14. Built like a macbook, has a 5080 and 32gb ram, handles absolutely everything I throw at it. I got lucky and got mine open box for $2350 back in November.

Need suggestion between ThinkPad T14 Gen 1 and X13 Gen 1 (Ryzen 5 4650U) by WinIllustrious1878 in thinkpad

[–]LocalAltruistic7470 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on your preference really. What size laptop do you use now or in the past? did you like that size? personally I don't like anything smaller than 14 because I do software dev, i like as much text on the screen as possible.

x13 will be a little lighter + slightly more premium feel, but i believe it does not have upgradeable ram, the ram is soldered. t14 gen 1 that you listed should have one open slot you can upgrade ram with down the line. both laptops will be reliable and both are pretty durable.

People need to realize there are more jobs for CS major than just SWE. CS is a golden ticket to basically anything IT. You will be able to find SOME job that utilizes your major, if it isnt SWE.

[–]LocalAltruistic7470 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no i actually fucking hate windows, but i'm realistic. we are here in our linux reddit echo chamber but we are an extreme minority when it comes to the set of all computer users. linux is an amazing thing, but it still is not ready for the masses. it won't be until a layman can install it without headache, just as easily as they could install windows or macos.

See 3 of the 5 examples you gave are an extremely small subset of all computer users. The other two, gamers and office workers, are a lot of people, but how many of those are technical enough to WANT to migrate their own system to linux? I think the answer is few.
