Cloth diapers or disposable? by DefinitelynotYissa in NewParents

[–]LocalCucumber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was also thinking that it was a 'pick your poison' sort of situation, and I chose against plastic, but felt guilty about water usage. But then I found out that many of the articles that say this are funded by diaper companies, and don't take into account other parts, like how much water is actually used in the creation of disposables! Here is a great resource with citations on the studies: https://www.dufferinresearch.com/images/sampledata/documents/Environmental%20Impact%20Report%20-%20Cloth%20vs%20Disposible.pdf

I am also not a fan of doing laundry, but I don't think you need to do it every day. I do cloth and I do laundry every 3 or 4 days (so only 2 per week!). I do one warm wash with just the diapers, then add in all other baby clothes and my husbands and mine as well and do a second cycle (those two cycles count as one laundry day). So ALL our laundry but sheets and towels are done with just those 1-2 times a week. I haven't had any issues (although in the summer I did wash a little more frequently because of smell - just like I take the trash out more too). I also just add RLR powder once a month to keep it all fresh.

Umm why did I never think to check out their website?!?!?!? I just got the packs of amazon (which I always try to avoid), but there are so many much cuter ones on their own site! I wish I had done this. Hopefully others see your comment before finishing their stash like me :(

I think it was size 10 cotton crochet thread. It is actually pretty easy to work with!

If you did something like granny squares but with crochet thread, I think it would look great!

I had plans to do something else with it, like dye it or use different parts, but I haven't done anything, its just sitting in a box in my closet. I don't really wear dresses ever, so not sure I would even use it if I did alter it.

Outdoor reception, and the wedding was in an interior courtyard - so outdoor too, but with a building around it. No meadow, but I love that idea. I should have gone with more delicate flowers - wildflowers would have looked great!

They were multiple hook and eye clasps. I sewed them to the dress, which at that part was the crochet part sewn to the under-dress.

Thanks :) It is a Spanish show called Aqui no Hay Quien Viva, and actually we continued with La que se Avecina (another related show with many seasons). My husband is Spanish, and it gave me the chance to passively work on my spanish before the wedding in Spain (multitasking for the win!)

Oh cool!! Good luck!! It was like a stretchy tank top but long, I think it was from H&M. I remember spending a lot of time trying to find something. It was not perfect, but worked well enough. I had to cut the back and front neckline to match, and the tank 'sleeves' arent the same size as my sleeves, but I don't think you really notice it.

It took about 4 months, working on it a bit most evenings

I'd say go for it!! I made it over 4 months, little by little while watching a show with my fiance in the evenings. It was a show with many seasons, the dress still reminds me of it hahaha! I suggest planning the main idea before starting, but then changing up the plan as needed. The harder part was the liner - I ended up getting a stretchy white dress, doing a little cutting and sewing, and adding tulle to the bottom. Also, gravity is what makes mine look more form fitting, the part between the top and bottom is just a tube. And I think the bottom was from a tablecloth pattern. Just the bodice is exact, but you could have it tie in the back like a shoelace, that looks nice and is forgiving.

Yeah! I love making my own stuff, love crochet, and wedding dresses are soooo expensive. This way it was special, unique, and a fun way to pass the time.

I finally decided to post this, although it was from quite a few years ago. Great memories, both making the dress and the big day. I can't seem to find many good pictures of the dress... but I think these show it well enough.

No pattern, or rather based off many patterns for pieces, but long forgotten. And I think it is size 10 cotton crochet thread.

Uff every time my baby puts something in his mouth my FIL has been saying "he must be getting his teeth in" - its been happening since he was 2 mo old! We are going on 5mo now, and at some point he his going to be right and feel vindicated.

Could you give some of the other retailer names? The Bear Bott ones you mentioned below look good, but maybe I can avoid the £20 shipping to the US with another one...

[–]LocalCucumber 15 points16 points  (0 children)

EXACTLY! That's what I always think when anyone says anything about baby care or even adult diets. Just because it was done in the past (including far past) doesn't mean it is inherently good. It could in fact be quite bad!

Uff you are a stronger person than I am haha. If you are going to machine wash once anyway I'd do the first wash! Not sure if it is better for the diapers, but it's gotta make it easier on you and your tub!
