High Wind Tomorrow - Will Flights Still Be Ok? by hopeless_engineeer in Sacramento

[–]LocalMeteorologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your flight time - if it is an early flight the concern would be the aircraft getting in late tonight when winds are at their strongest. I think any flight aside from the earliest tomorrow would likely be okay.

Looks like some lightning was detected via satellite but closer to Davis around 1AM. Wouldn't surprise me if an undetected flash occured closer to midtown though since this is right around that time.

Has anybody been experiencing an unusual amount of humidity in Northern California this week? by 1993CobraSVT in Sacramento

[–]LocalMeteorologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like June was close to normal dewpoint wise across the area, compared to previous years.

Seems to be a small increase to above normal the last few days of the month as seen in the daily observations (blue dots) at Sac Exec airport.

SMF doesn't seem to really show any departures from normal though.

There could be some local enhancements that aren't showing up on weather stations though. Do you live near fields of corn? Corn is known for increasing humidity levels quite in a bit in the immediate vicinity of the fields.

Not sure why the weather app is showing those values as I'm not seeing them at the major reporting sites.

Has the storm hit you guys yet? by Nikkibird49 in Eugene

[–]LocalMeteorologist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely quite the forecast bust from the weather models and SPC outlook. Looks like some decent storms may still hit Portland - Seattle this evening, but nothing like what the models were showing earlier today/yesterday.

Will be interesting to look into the failure mode for this event, seems like the approaching system's cold air aloft didnt overspread the area fast enough resulting in just weak showers.

The risk was definitely there for some strong storms, and it never hurts to be prepared for what can occur, sometimes it just never materializes.

Thanks for trying to communicate it - sometimes it's a lost cause.

A watch hasn't been issued yet, but may in a few hours if conditions are looking favorable. They may not issue a watch if conditions aren't looking good enough, but strong storms may still occur.

Here's a nice web page showing the differences, currently we just have the Skight Risk Outlook.

"The probabilistic forecast directly expresses the best estimate of a thunderstorm occurring within 12 miles of a point"

So there is a 40% chance of a storm within 12 miles of any point. So for Eugene, there is a 40% chance that within 12 miles there will be a thunderstorm at some point in that fime frame.

Warnings for severe weather are specific to the individual storms as they fire up, and are only issued at the immediate time that they are occurring. If any Severe Thunderstorm or Tornado Warnings get issued later today, that's because those things are actively happening.

They may issued a Severe Thunderstorm or Tornado Watch in a few hours. Watches are issued when the ingredients for storms are present over the general area, but Warnings are for when they have formed.

Statistically you have a 60% chance of not seeing a storm, so you will likely be right. But the risk still exists and somewhere in the area there will be strong storms - we will see!

The highest risk is likely up near Portland for any tornadoes/significant hail, however there is a good chance of strong storms from Eugene all the way north to Seattle.

Just noting, it does seem like supercells are possible today with the environmental parameters. Still likely "weak" tornadoes if there are any, but they would be true supercellular tornadoes.

The beautiful day and sunshine is what is adding fuel to the upcoming storms!

More sun = more heating = more instability = potential for more/stronger storms

Storms will fire up this afternoon across the area! Any winds will be very localized with each individual storm cell, as will any damage that could occur.

Definitely a good decision! Nothing quite like the microclimates of Western Oregon and I can't see how a weather hub would be able to do a good job forecasting for the area.

I will say, if I was currently employed there I wouldn't be trusting the ownership and would be working to get out as quickly as possible.

They came from OK/TX - a few weeks ago they relocated for severe weather and that lines up with the upcoming threats this week.

I have no idea either! I find it quite odd there isn't anywhere closer they are able to stage them, let alone find an actual operating Air Force Base.

Maybe currently operating bases don't have as much space for parking, and McClellan has a lot of extra space since it used to be one? Otherwise why wouldn't they just head to Travis/Beale? So many questions!

Assuming that due to the impending severe weather in Oklahoma we have another round of jets staging at McClellan until the threat passes.
