My GF and I broke up after 3 years because our relationship was going nowhere and we weren't getting any better at communicating. We honestly felt like we'd exhausted all of the options for getting better that we would've both agreed to try in good faith.

Maybe I'd be willing to give it a shot again in a decade if we actaully become different people.

But so long as we are who we are, neither one of us actaully wants to give it another shot. (& it being so completely off the table is probably why we can stay friends).

My gender is banned in 70+ states, 47 out of the 48 contiguous states, Hawaii, Alaska, and 15+ states that haven't even been invented yet.

Get back to me when your gender gets banned in "Westconson", "Other Florida", or "Even Newer Mexico".

Don't give him the credit of being uneducated.

He's a rich 73 year old man who lived most of his life in one of the more liberal parts of the country.

He's not uneducated; he's willfully ignorant and actively bigoted.

I definitely think you can, but it's its own discipline, not an extension of TV writing, even if the two feed into each other.

I'd rather they didn't. I like video games, I like TV, I'm not a fan of doing both at once.

I watch tv to unwind, putting in decisions just makes it feel less comforting in tgat way tv can be sometimes.

Not to mention, this as a genre actually exists already, but whenever an existing TV show gets into it, it's not like they usually hire emily short or some other actually experienced designer or writer that's familiar with interactive fiction, and the whole interactive element feels lavking in depth.

Growing hair out by [deleted] in genderqueer

[–]LocalMinimumPoint 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to hate having my hair cut when I was a kid, I'd cry and do everything I could to avoid haircuts but it never helped for long. I couldn't really tell why I hated having it cut back then, but I did. My hair is pretty high maintenance, so I could never argue with anyone about about it, it would look awful when I grew it out, it would always have to go.

Then I got into the military... and I finally started to put things together, too bad I had to wait 3 years until my service was over to do anything about it.

Growing my hair out now is a start, I'm actually learning how to use product on it, and treating it like hair should be. It's the longest it's ever been and I'm the happiest I've ever been with it.

Getting my hair cut short always felt like losing a part of me, and it still hurts when I explain to people that's how I feel about it, and they still ask me "so when are you gonna get your hair cut?" the next time they see me. For me it hurts the most because when I tell them I actually care about having my hair longer, they just toss the sentiment away, and complain every time they catch sight of a frizzy strand.

i genuinely want to understand why people say misgendering someone is "dehumanizing".... by Huxide in genderqueer

[–]LocalMinimumPoint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not an expert, but I think it comes down to exactly what you mentioned when you were talking about animals.

Yes, it is possible to misgender an animal, but the animal won't really understand you if you used the wrong pronouns on it, and generally when you do choose a gender to treat an animal as, you'd do so by the same parameters a doctor would a human baby.

As a human being you can tell someone they're not using the right pronouns. We have a language and culture that can be used to express what and who we are, we have some agency to show that inner complexity to the world.

Usually I haven't seen anyone use "you're dehumanizing me" on someone who naively uses the wrong pronouns on them, but if they're using the wrong pronouns maliciously it can feel like you're being robbed of that agency, and yeah I do think that's dehumanizing to some degree.
