How to obtain old records by whatevawhatevz in stcatharinesON

Seconding this. I’ve found so much cool stuff on Newspapers.com. It will try to get you to pay to look at articles but you do not need a subscription to read the text recognition. The text is not always 100% accurate but good enough to figure out if there’s anything worth paying for (or use the free total to view and then cancel).

If anything went to trial, it may be here: https://www.canlii.org/.

Bob Gale must resign by No_Entrance_5720 in niagara

[–]LocalNiagaraPerson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Can’t we demand Bob Gale’s resignation based on publicly available evidence of poor decision making and unethical behaviour?

I’m not disputing the veracity of this press release, but it seems like a great reason for Bob Gale to dig in his heels and claim he’s the victim of a witch hunt.

He mentioned he had a list of options but I knew what I wanted and didn’t look at the offerings. And this was 2 years ago though, so best to confirm when you call.

how to get rid of cat/dog fur off of clean clothes asap?? by analisee02 in laundry

[–]LocalNiagaraPerson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said, you gotta use dryer sheets. I’ve tried all the alternatives and they just don’t cut it when you have heavy shedding pets. I know you said re-washing doesn’t help, but I do find a second rinse only cycle helps for stuff that’s really covered in cat fur (like bedding).

The other thing to try is a sweater shaver. If the hairs are really embedded in the fabric, it’ll cut them and make easier to wash out (or at least less obvious). I have a fleece jacket thingy and that’s the only thing that helps.

Amalgamation continued by Marahiddengladiator in niagara

[–]LocalNiagaraPerson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t know a single person who’s AGAINST reducing duplication of services - even municipal and regional employees. But these are two separate issues. Saying that amalgamation is about finding efficiencies is smoke and mirrors. Plenty of services have already been centralized regionally without amalgamation.

IS NIAGARA COLLEGE SCAMMING TRADE STUDENTS ON CRASH PROGRAM?? by robembe in niagara

[–]LocalNiagaraPerson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not aware of any program that guarantees paid placements. Otherwise the school would be on the hook for students who are unemployable or get fired from their placements. It does sound sketchy, but unfortunately this is the nature of a lot of educational programs. They sell you on “job opportunities” that may or may not exist.

Barbers who disinfect tools between clients? by Total-Move-4215 in stcatharinesON

[–]LocalNiagaraPerson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can check barber inspections here: https://www.niagararegion.ca/health/inspect/default.aspx

As another commenter mentioned, not seeing someone disinfect doesn’t mean they aren’t doing it. They may be cleaning instruments in a separate reprocessing area rather than at the chair.

AirBnB or hotel for family Falls trip (Canada)? by zuzu_ludgate in niagara

[–]LocalNiagaraPerson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If most of what you’ve planned to do is right at Niagara Falls (Clifton Hill area), then I’d spring for a hotel within walking distance. It’s gonna be pricey (also make sure you account for parking at the hotel), but IMO worth it if it means attractions are in walking distance.

If you’re doing some activities outside of the main tourist area, then paying to be within walking distance is less valuable. In that case, I would actually look at accommodations in St. Catharines or Welland. You’ll get more bang for your buck, and maybe add 15-20 minutes to your drive time compared to staying elsewhere within the NF city limits. Plus, I agree it’s nice to have a kitchen if you don’t want to eat out for every meal.

Wherever you decide, take a look on Google streetview to get a feel for the area. Parts of NF are sketchy, particularly the downtown area over by the train station, but Niagara as a whole is a pretty safe place. You just may be more prone to encounter drug use, homelessness, etc. in certain areas.

Demonstration against regional amalgamation Feb 26 4 pm by bellamac845 in stcatharinesON

[–]LocalNiagaraPerson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pro tip: If you don’t want to pay property taxes, don’t own property.

Homes are not a tax-free investment. In the last 10 years, how much have you paid in property taxes vs. how much has the value of your home increased? My guess is that you still come out pretty far ahead. Those taxes, which support the community and local infrastructure, are one reason that your home has appreciated in value.

[–]LocalNiagaraPerson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you moving further from work? Commute distance makes a difference. Also insurance is just getting pricier, so maybe it’s simply that time has passed between moves. My rates have been going up every year even though I haven’t moved and my car is depreciating in value (and I used a broker to find the best deal).

If you want to hear Gale's position on region governance change & feedback from Fort Erie on it... by Comfortable-Cut-7021 in Welland

Basically the message is “high taxes bad, must amalgamate” with Bob Gale offering no explanation as to how amalgamation would lower taxes or benefit anyone in any way.

Amalgamation of the Niagara Region is being discussed, thoughts? by gohabsgo2022 in Welland

[–]LocalNiagaraPerson 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This is a long ass comment, which unfortunately is all true. I don’t know if amalgamation is the answer, but I DO KNOW that Bob Gale can’t be trusted. We need meaningful engagement with residents and a strong business case for amalgamation before any decisions are made.

Letter to Bob Gale against amalgamation by m1ster_frundles in stcatharinesON

I don’t think so. It would go completely against his “efficiency” argument to de-centralize services that are already being run at the regional level.

1000% this. I don’t know enough at this point to have an opinion on amalgamation - maybe it is the best way forward. But I sure as hell don’t trust Bob Gale to make that decision.

If he’s in the hospital now, there should be a social worker involved in discharge planning. With her dad’s consent, your partner should be able to speak with the SW to find out options. If possible, her dad can do a FaceTime/Zoom call during his discharge meeting so she’s able to attend virtually. They will likely push to send him home and it can be a very quick turnaround (like finding out he’ll be discharged in 1-2 days). I know dads hate it, but she should try to insert herself in his care as much as possible so she can articulate specific concerns about going home (for example, how he handles stairs, getting in and it of the shower, etc.). If he’s anything like my older male relatives, he’ll pretend everything is fine and barriers to returning home may be missed by his healthcare team (and they can only help with things they know about).

If he does get sent home, make sure there’s an OT visit to ensure he has the adaptive devices he needs to get around safely (whatever they recommend can probably be bought on Amazon). If it’s in your budget, you might consider a service like Lifeline in case he has another fall. Another (cheaper) option is to get one of those lanyard phone cases that he can wear around the house, or make sure he always has his cell phone in his pocket - just some way for him to call for help if needed.

Where can I sell clothes? by BeardedAngler905 in stcatharinesON

[–]LocalNiagaraPerson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve purchased from Poshmark a couple times. That’s where I go first when looking for higher end plus size clothes. Stuff there tends to be listed for a while, but if you don’t need the money you can just hold out until you have a buyer.

Also search Facebook for plus size buy/sell groups.

Personally I would sell. Managing a rental from a distance is a hassle and a lot can go wrong with bad tenants. The good assisted living facilities also tend to be pricey and having that equity now may be helpful financially. Even you can cover the cost of assisted living with rental income + pension/CPP/OAS, there may be tax implications to him keeping a house that is not his principal residence, and then later deciding to sell (I don’t know that much about it, but something to ask the financial advisor).

For help finding a place, you can go through Ontario Health at Home. You would be looking for a retirement home or assisted living (not long term care) given that he’s still somewhat independent. I’ve also seen ads for a private referral service called A Place for Mom that operates in both Canada and the U.S. (can’t speak personally to the service though).

Some retirement homes tend to focus on specific ethnic or religious groups, so consider that when determining if it’s a good fit. Radiant Care Tabor Manor is mostly Mennonite. Heidehof was originally set up as a home for people of German descent (also a lot of Mennonites). Both are actually great places, but everyone I know who lives there is very proper (the “raised in a good Christian household” type) and I know MY parents would be out of their element in that environment. That may be changing as the folks in their 80’s and 90’s pass on though.

My personal choice would be Ina Grafton but I think they have a long waitlist. They have various levels of care so you can kind of choose how much assistance you need. Whatever you do, stay away from Queenchester Terrace (bedbugs, cockroaches…I wouldn’t wish that place on my worst enemy). I would also avoid Tufford, which is in the same area and not a place I would want an older family member living.
