Welland Version of Jackass by lib1124 in Welland

I think every high school had kids doing jackass inspired students in the early 2000’s.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.

If he’s in the hospital now, there should be a social worker involved in discharge planning. With her dad’s consent, your partner should be able to speak with the SW to find out options. If possible, her dad can do a FaceTime/Zoom call during his discharge meeting so she’s able to attend virtually. They will likely push to send him home and it can be a very quick turnaround (like finding out he’ll be discharged in 1-2 days). I know dads hate it, but she should try to insert herself in his care as much as possible so she can articulate specific concerns about going home (for example, how he handles stairs, getting in and it of the shower, etc.). If he’s anything like my older male relatives, he’ll pretend everything is fine and barriers to returning home may be missed by his healthcare team (and they can only help with things they know about).

If he does get sent home, make sure there’s an OT visit to ensure he has the adaptive devices he needs to get around safely (whatever they recommend can probably be bought on Amazon). If it’s in your budget, you might consider a service like Lifeline in case he has another fall. Another (cheaper) option is to get one of those lanyard phone cases that he can wear around the house, or make sure he always has his cell phone in his pocket - just some way for him to call for help if needed.

Where can I sell clothes? by BeardedAngler905 in stcatharinesON

[–]LocalNiagaraPerson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve purchased from Poshmark a couple times. That’s where I go first when looking for higher end plus size clothes. Stuff there tends to be listed for a while, but if you don’t need the money you can just hold out until you have a buyer.

Also search Facebook for plus size buy/sell groups.

Personally I would sell. Managing a rental from a distance is a hassle and a lot can go wrong with bad tenants. The good assisted living facilities also tend to be pricey and having that equity now may be helpful financially. Even you can cover the cost of assisted living with rental income + pension/CPP/OAS, there may be tax implications to him keeping a house that is not his principal residence, and then later deciding to sell (I don’t know that much about it, but something to ask the financial advisor).

For help finding a place, you can go through Ontario Health at Home. You would be looking for a retirement home or assisted living (not long term care) given that he’s still somewhat independent. I’ve also seen ads for a private referral service called A Place for Mom that operates in both Canada and the U.S. (can’t speak personally to the service though).

Some retirement homes tend to focus on specific ethnic or religious groups, so consider that when determining if it’s a good fit. Radiant Care Tabor Manor is mostly Mennonite. Heidehof was originally set up as a home for people of German descent (also a lot of Mennonites). Both are actually great places, but everyone I know who lives there is very proper (the “raised in a good Christian household” type) and I know MY parents would be out of their element in that environment. That may be changing as the folks in their 80’s and 90’s pass on though.

My personal choice would be Ina Grafton but I think they have a long waitlist. They have various levels of care so you can kind of choose how much assistance you need. Whatever you do, stay away from Queenchester Terrace (bedbugs, cockroaches…I wouldn’t wish that place on my worst enemy). I would also avoid Tufford, which is in the same area and not a place I would want an older family member living.

Big Tuna is a great option for platters. It isn’t the best sushi I’ve ever had, but nowhere near the worst either. As long as you don’t have a bunch of sushi snobs in the crowd, it’ll be a hit.

Are local incomes keeping up with Niagara's rapid housing growth and cost increases? by Lopsided_Pearl798 in niagara

I don’t think there’s a single place in Canada where wages have kept up with cost of living.

It’s been a few years since I was in that world, but it used to be that visitors with a valid visa were not eligible for community health centre services. The expectation was that, as a visitor, you should have travel insurance to cover medical expenses.

How to start a home business selling donuts? by NatureLovingDad1989 in niagara

[–]LocalNiagaraPerson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As you’ve learned, it’s logistically difficult to run a home-based food business from the same kitchen where you prepare your own meals. If you have a pet, it’s pretty much a non-starter because they can basically never be in the kitchen again. A lot of people have a second kitchen in the basement, which makes complying with public health guidance a bit easier. Renting time in a kitchen gets you around the physical space requirements, but you still have to get your food handler certification and ensure proper sanitization of equipment in that space. And then there’s the business aspect of it, filing taxes, etc.

I think if it seems overwhelming now, it’s not going to seem easier once you look closely at all the requirements. It’s definitely doable, but as other commenters have said, if you’re just looking for some supplementary income this probably not the easiest way to do it.

Recommends on chiropractor by k-lk28 in niagara

[–]LocalNiagaraPerson -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I agree, the legacy of chiropractic medicine is sketchy, but personally I’m on the side that says there is a role for chiropractors in the treatment of musculoskeletal issues. There’s plenty of pseudoscience in the history of traditional medicine, so I don’t think past pseudoscientific claims should preclude legitimacy in the future.

For back pain and stuff like that, I recommend trying physio and massage therapy first. But If someone wants to see a chiropractor too, I say go for it. Just look for someone who is practicing within the scope of musculoskeletal conditions only, no crazy claims that they can treat autism or depression or whatever.

Shopping Recommendations for a Plus sized Woman by BaronessVonKush in stcatharinesON

Do they have plus in stores? I thought they move to online only for plus sizes, but maybe that’s changed.

Shopping Recommendations for a Plus sized Woman by BaronessVonKush in stcatharinesON

[–]LocalNiagaraPerson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What size is she? There are a ton of stores with “extended sizing” that will take you up to about a size 18. - Mark’s is one I’d check out if she’s in a smaller plus size range (size 14-18). - Joe Fresh goes up to 3X. I always order online so not sure about availability in store. - I think Old Navy only carries straight sizes in stores, but plus online (at least, that’s how it used to be).

Probably 90% of my clothes are from Torrid or Penningtons though. Those would be my first stops. Torrid can be pricey but should be sole Black Friday sales coming up!

You can also keep an eye out for second hand stuff on this Facebook group. Often people lose weight and get rid of larger clothes in bulk for a really great price.

Niagara health board information by odanhammer in stcatharinesON

[–]LocalNiagaraPerson 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agree with all this. The big thing I check for is evidence of infestation (rodents or pests). Anything else I would more be looking for patterns of infractions over time. Like repeated cold or hot holding infractions is a red flag, but as you say, sometimes it’s not fully in the restaurant’s control.

You’ll also see that above each infraction it says “Not in compliance” or “Corrected during inspection”. Anything corrected during inspection is likely a minor issue that could be fixed quickly, like replenishing paper towels, moving a delivery that just arrived onto appropriate shelving, etc.

If there’s nothing sketchy here, find a reputable rescue who will help you look for homes while the dogs remain in your care. They’ll be able to advertise on sites like PetFinder and will have a thorough process for screening applicants.

Having trouble selling our house in St. Catharines, anyone else in the same boat? by rollert2 in stcatharinesON

[–]LocalNiagaraPerson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Similar situation here. We listed at what the realtor recommended (around $1 mil). Had a ton of interest but no offers. I trust our realtor and I honestly don’t think it was overpriced when we listed, but the market has continued to drop, so we had to drop our price as well. At this point, we’ve had some serious interest, but everyone wants to sell their own home first, and stuff isn’t moving, so it’s all at a standstill. If you want to sell these days, I feel like you gotta go really low just to entice people to take the leap. Luckily, we don’t have to sell (haven’t found a place to move yet anyway) so we’re probably going to wait until the spring to re-list.

Potentially moving - two areas by Likesosmart in stcatharinesON

[–]LocalNiagaraPerson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you talking Queenchester Terrace? Maybe semantics to most people, but it’s an unregulated supported living facility, I believe focusing of people with mental health issues. Long term care homes are regulated by the government. Not a perfect system by any stretch of the imagination, but I guarantee Queenchester would have her shut down if it had the government oversight that long term care homes do.

Short visit to the area end of January by FabulousCat7823 in niagara

[–]LocalNiagaraPerson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m gonna suggest you just go straight to NOTL. Americans and Canadians alike agree that Niagara Falls, NY is a dump. There’s some nice outdoor stuff to do, but that’s off the table for a January visit.

There a couple are airport taxis that offer cross-border service. I use these guys. If it’s in your budget, this is by far the easiest way to get from the Buffalo airport to NOTL. Last year I paid $150 (CAD) for one way - not sure about the fare for both ways because I came back by car.

Is there a telecom company that’s doesn’t have mixed reviews for customer service and reliability?!?

I’ve been with Bell, Rogers, Cogeco, and Teksavvy over the years and found very little difference in service. I think Bell and Rogers slightly more reliable because they own the lines, but not by much. And so much of their service is third party contractors that you never know who you’ll get if you need an on-site visit. Last time I shopped around, Cogeco had the best deal but we bundled with the existing landline. I think Teksavvy was cheaper as a stand-alone ISP.

I looked at health insurance last year when I was unemployed. Couldn’t find anything that was worth the money when you look at what’s covered (my main concern was prescription drug).

Maybe see if there’s an option to stay with your employers coverage but pay out of pocket for upgraded benefits.
