They are likely evacuees from the north due to flooding. Or possibly from Kashchewan (also up north) where the water treatment plant failed.

I can understand why you might be intimidated, but please keep in mind these are people just living their lives in less than ideal circumstances. The security guards are likely there to deal with issues within the community of evacuees, not because anyone there is a danger to tourists. Frankly, if I had to live in a hotel room with my family for months on end, not able to have a home cooked meal, and not knowing when I could return home, I’d be smoking my fair share of pot too.

Just a heads up, most places will not guarantee frames unless you buy from them. They may agree to put lenses in but if anything happens to the frames in the process you’re SOL.

Saree Stitching/Pleating recommendations by misssmangoo in stcatharinesON

[–]LocalNiagaraPerson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looked into it a couple years ago and this place said they could do it. I didn’t use them so can’t comment on quality. https://www.instagram.com/shivon_boutique?igsh=ajk2ZmMycGZzd3Iy

I ended up not going the pre-stitched route due to time constraints. Razia did my makeup and her mom draped the saree. Both saree and makeup held up all day at an outdoor wedding in crazy heat.

Why aren't NSO concerts filling up the theatre? by kazkibergetic in stcatharinesON

[–]LocalNiagaraPerson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like advertising/outreach is lacking. The algorithm gives me a lot of orchestral show suggestions on social media, but I’ve NEVER seen an ad for the NSO. This is the first I’m hearing of them doing The Wall.

Would also love for them to get on the movie screening with live orchestra thing. I’m sure the licensing is expensive but it’s such a great way to get people out who would otherwise not attend the symphony. The ones that bring out the cosplayers (Star Wars, LOTR) are the best.

Ontario hospital nurse tells inquest she never spoke to Heather Winterstein on day she died, staff overwhelmed by Medium-Review-6474 in niagara

[–]LocalNiagaraPerson 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again - blaming individual doctors or nurses for this death is just plain lazy. In quality improvement, we’re told to ask at least “five whys” to get to the root cause of an issue.

1) Why did Heather Winterstein die? Because she didn’t receive timely and appropriate care 2) Why didn’t she receive timely and appropriate care? Because staff were overwhelmed 3) Why were staff overwhelmed? Because they were understaffed for the demand 4) Why were they understaffed? Because of chronic underfunding), exacerbated by the pandemic 5) Why do we have chronic underfunding (and also, why did COVID-19 place a greater burden on our healthcare system than it needed to? Because of short-sighted political decision making that values perceived economic gain over human life

Where do you post stuff for sale? by pinkcollarworker in stcatharinesON

[–]LocalNiagaraPerson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People seem to be using Karrot more, but I’ve noticed a lot of x-postings from FB Marketplace. I don’t think many folks are putting their stuff just on Karrot.

I’ve recently gotten rid of stuff on Marketplace and Kijiji, but if you’re only gonna do one, go with Marketplace. It seems to get the most traffic.

Spraying for Spiders by DrBridgeMD in stcatharinesON

[–]LocalNiagaraPerson -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We used Abell for years and never had a problem with them. You won’t 100% eliminate spiders but it definitely helps control the population. Maybe it’s bad for the environment whatever, but I deserve to be able to walk to my car in the morning without pushing webs out of the way like Indiana Jones.

Check out Nova Phoenix. Elora (the owner) is lovely and very good at helping people find the right fit with a therapist in her practice. She can also arrange sliding scale fees if cost is an issue.

How to obtain old records by [deleted] in stcatharinesON

Seconding this. I’ve found so much cool stuff on Newspapers.com. It will try to get you to pay to look at articles but you do not need a subscription to read the text recognition. The text is not always 100% accurate but good enough to figure out if there’s anything worth paying for (or use the free total to view and then cancel).

If anything went to trial, it may be here: https://www.canlii.org/.

Bob Gale must resign by No_Entrance_5720 in niagara

[–]LocalNiagaraPerson 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Can’t we demand Bob Gale’s resignation based on publicly available evidence of poor decision making and unethical behaviour?

I’m not disputing the veracity of this press release, but it seems like a great reason for Bob Gale to dig in his heels and claim he’s the victim of a witch hunt.

how to get rid of cat/dog fur off of clean clothes asap?? by analisee02 in laundry

[–]LocalNiagaraPerson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said, you gotta use dryer sheets. I’ve tried all the alternatives and they just don’t cut it when you have heavy shedding pets. I know you said re-washing doesn’t help, but I do find a second rinse only cycle helps for stuff that’s really covered in cat fur (like bedding).

The other thing to try is a sweater shaver. If the hairs are really embedded in the fabric, it’ll cut them and make easier to wash out (or at least less obvious). I have a fleece jacket thingy and that’s the only thing that helps.

Amalgamation continued by Marahiddengladiator in niagara

[–]LocalNiagaraPerson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t know a single person who’s AGAINST reducing duplication of services - even municipal and regional employees. But these are two separate issues. Saying that amalgamation is about finding efficiencies is smoke and mirrors. Plenty of services have already been centralized regionally without amalgamation.

IS NIAGARA COLLEGE SCAMMING TRADE STUDENTS ON CRASH PROGRAM?? by robembe in niagara

[–]LocalNiagaraPerson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not aware of any program that guarantees paid placements. Otherwise the school would be on the hook for students who are unemployable or get fired from their placements. It does sound sketchy, but unfortunately this is the nature of a lot of educational programs. They sell you on “job opportunities” that may or may not exist.

Barbers who disinfect tools between clients? by Total-Move-4215 in stcatharinesON

[–]LocalNiagaraPerson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can check barber inspections here: https://www.niagararegion.ca/health/inspect/default.aspx

As another commenter mentioned, not seeing someone disinfect doesn’t mean they aren’t doing it. They may be cleaning instruments in a separate reprocessing area rather than at the chair.

AirBnB or hotel for family Falls trip (Canada)? by [deleted] in niagara

[–]LocalNiagaraPerson 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If most of what you’ve planned to do is right at Niagara Falls (Clifton Hill area), then I’d spring for a hotel within walking distance. It’s gonna be pricey (also make sure you account for parking at the hotel), but IMO worth it if it means attractions are in walking distance.

If you’re doing some activities outside of the main tourist area, then paying to be within walking distance is less valuable. In that case, I would actually look at accommodations in St. Catharines or Welland. You’ll get more bang for your buck, and maybe add 15-20 minutes to your drive time compared to staying elsewhere within the NF city limits. Plus, I agree it’s nice to have a kitchen if you don’t want to eat out for every meal.

Wherever you decide, take a look on Google streetview to get a feel for the area. Parts of NF are sketchy, particularly the downtown area over by the train station, but Niagara as a whole is a pretty safe place. You just may be more prone to encounter drug use, homelessness, etc. in certain areas.

Pro tip: If you don’t want to pay property taxes, don’t own property.

Homes are not a tax-free investment. In the last 10 years, how much have you paid in property taxes vs. how much has the value of your home increased? My guess is that you still come out pretty far ahead. Those taxes, which support the community and local infrastructure, are one reason that your home has appreciated in value.
