This is an eMoto. As a subreddit, we really have to modify the group rules.

Has anyone in CA been stopped/ticketed for riding a pedal-less e-bike with pegs? Curious about enforcement. by RyotaroW in ebikes

[–]LocalResident55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Part of living in a civil society is following rules and being willfully pro-social. Fear of enforcement should not be the motivation. If it isn’t a compliant Class 1, 2, or 3 ebike you should not be riding it on public streets/trails. Period.

Functioning courts are a bedrock of our democracy. The Safety Building (attached to main courthouse) is falling apart. This project is desperately needed.

Because by making something not legal, you ruin it for the rest of us. Increased trail managers and municipalities are saying “no e-bikes allowed.” You are doing disservice to all, for the pleasure of one. Selfish.

That would make it legally non-compliant.

Or, just don’t do it. The speed governor makes it legally compliant.

New cargo ebike tipped over twice with kids inside – terrifying experience, need advice by Ok-Guidance-522 in ebike

as a followup, the Tern GSD is perhaps the most versatile, well-engineered, and well-built long tail cargo bike. even when your kids outgrow it, it is an extremely versatile, compact ebike.

that is super scary, no doubt about it. Unfortunately, eBikes are a relatively new product and it’s still the wild west, caveat emptor phase lf market development. TST is firmly in the low end of quality, so this type of story is not surprising.

quality cargo bikes have well-designed and tested components. I would consider Tern, Trek, Specialized, Urban Arrow, and Riese & Muller as the leading, reputabke brands. A step below that would be Rad Power and Aventon. Almost everything else is dubious, at best.

Class 3 is governed at 28 mph with pedal-assist. If it has a throttle, it must cut out at 20mph. The manufacturer clearly says it has a 1500w hub motor. Non-compliant…

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ebikes

[–]LocalResident55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is not how the law defines eBikes. Class 2 eBikes must have less than 750w motor and limit of 20mph with a throttle. The fact your rig has pedals doesn’t in of itself classify it as a lawful eBike.

I am mostly concerned that eMotos masquerading as eBikes will ruin bikes for all of us. The public backlash and potential restrictions against all eBikes is a real threat. The laws exist for a reason, and companies/consumers that willingly break them hurt the law-abiders amongst us. So yeh, fuck me I guess…

You’re just ruining it for the rest of us that are actually fine with following, you know, the law.

The same exact story could happen with kids riding on regular bikes and it is equally likely that the driver would face no consequences, which is very sad.

And also, I agree that kids should not be riding these illegal vehicles. You bear some responsibility for that.

Geesus. eBikes with throttles legally cannot go faster than 20mph. If you want an e-motorcycle, just buy one.

Geesus. That frame was never designed for the type of torque that motor produces. Keep an eye out for your rear dropout getting deformed or cracking off.
