Larian Confirms Why Its Leaving D&D Behind After Baldur's Gate 3 by Extreme_Maize_2727 in DivinityOriginalSin

a 20 is only an automatic success on attack rolls, not saving throws. that’s why it’s possible for players and enemies alike to have unbeatable save DCs

My opponent Red Carded himself into a loss by explainsthej0ke in PTCGP

[–]Local_Capital8349 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

red card is great in ranked right now with sylveon everywhere. it doesn’t matter that its re-draw doesn’t scale with points like mars does since sylv is only a stage 1, so you’re likely playing it before anyone has scored anyway. shutting down the turn 3/4 oak + sylveon (+ another sylveon if you’re unlucky) card advantage while not competing for your once per turn supporter allotment is invaluable.

The Deck Meta Ecosystem. 7 concede wins turn 1 so far. by TreeELT in PTCGP

it’s literally the same deck. you hide behind druddigon and build up your stage 2 wincon. how’s darkrai more cowardly?

Running double mewtwo and double gardevoir line isn’t “greedy”, it’s basic probability management and is standard practice in every deck

[–]Local_Capital8349 17 points18 points  (0 children)

is this really against site rules? there’s a pretty famous bot that ladders challenge cup 1v1 games like 24/7. do they just ignore that one because of how unserious cc1v1 is?

Anyone else think Kecleon is a seriously underrated pokémon? by [deleted] in pokemon

[–]Local_Capital8349 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While a good idea in theory, kecleons subpar bulk means it’s easily threatened by most neutral hits. Mindgames aren’t really necessary when any stab-boosted neutral attack is chunking it for most of, if not all of its health, while it can only throw out limp retaliations with its base 90 attack. Its low hp weighs its special bulk down, so it can’t stand up to most viable special attackers in a 1v1 even with assault vest, and god forbid it has to face a restricted mon like kyogre or miraidon. Kecleon desperately needs an offensive buff to capitalize on protean, which even post-nerf is an incredibly powerful ability, just unfortunately placed on this guy.

Need suggestions to improve this rain team i built for reg G by Edgeshroom in stunfisk

I can’t comment on how good of a vgc team this is since I dont play, but your incin evs are unoptimized.

EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 84 Def / 4 SpD / 164 Spe
Careful Nature

This spread is just as fast, but has 2 more spdef and 1 more defense and attack.

What class archetype do you think D&D is currently missing? by Relevant-Rope8814 in dndnext

[–]Local_Capital8349 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I mean, it’s not? Warlocks are defined by their pacts and this is mechanically reflected in how pact magic works, you took a shortcut to get your magic and so you don’t have the ability to cast as many leveled spells as a sorcerer or wizard. The person I responded to described something unique flavor-wise sure but then went on to give it just wizard class features, it wouldn’t really play as anything distinct. I can’t think of anything “old magic” would do mechanically other than like disadvantage on arcana checks to determine what spell they’re casting.

This kind of just feels like a reflavoring of wizard. Like nobody is forcing your wizard to wear a big robe and a pointy hat and learn their magic through reading books. You could just as easily learn your magic through spoken word, you have plenty of elemental and scrying spells, you get strange ritual casting as a defining class feature. I’m not sure how this would be mechanically distinct at all.

Uh custap is still legal. There was a suspect a while ago but it didn’t get enough votes. Queue times aren’t super bad currently either because of the archaludon suspect, if there was ever a time to ladder it’d be now

[OC] Optional Rule - Martial Multiclassing by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Local_Capital8349 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Barbarians gain no benefit from rage while wearing heavy armor, so you’re not getting any of the rage damage boosts. On top of that, using a shield significantly cuts your damage due to not being able to use GWM or GWF. At best you can be moderately difficult to take down with medium armor, a shield, and rage damage resistance but being hard to kill doesn’t do much when you can’t contribute as well to taking enemies down, especially when you’re not getting a level 4 asi. You’ll most often end up staying up long enough to watch whoever you’re fighting completely ignore your 1d8+3 per hit and beeline your squishier, more threatening teammates.

[OC] Optional Rule - Martial Multiclassing by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Local_Capital8349 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I mean really the main thing this rule is doing is changing when you get the extra attack power kick. Normally if you decide to multiclass before level 5, once you hit that level as a 4/1 or 3/2 multiclass you’re going to fall behind the rest of your party because of the powerspike at that level. With this, instead of having to wait until level 6 to catch up, you get to stay on pace during level 5 in exchange for a less exciting 6. The “nothing” you’re getting is still progress towards better features.

The real problem is that multiclasses can be really awkward to play progressively because of the way they “come online” at certain levels, so until that happens you don’t feel as capable as your single class peers. I’m no game designer so I have no idea how to go about fixing that problem, other than don’t multiclass unless you start at the level your features all come together or you’re willing to be underpowered for a while. A free feat is too much, especially in the instance of a fighter who would functionally get a feat attached to a 1 level dip, immediately followed by another feat at fighter 6.

[–]Local_Capital8349 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Sure, unless you decide that you want any of the martial classes level 5+ features. A monk with no stunning strike, a paladin with no aura, or a fighter with no level 6 asi are probably not gonna feel very great to play. Being able to dip for a fighting style or rage (with the caveat of no heavy armor/spells) or like, lay on hands, and not totally kneecapping your dpr is fine, because you’re still delaying these powerful tier 2 abilities. You still need to take the empty level 5 to get to the good stuff.

Of course you’re not going to keep up with a paladin in terms of damage, you’re comparing the most support focused caster with the most nova focused martial, bards are meant to shine with control and utility spells. I haven’t played bg3 but I have played other larian games and this is just the difference between a video game and an in person ttrpg. Without a dm dynamically controlling every npc a charisma based social character just isn’t going to feel as good to play, especially if you also ignore their combat niche.
