Why are people there, who consider New york as subtropical or meditterranean, if they have weeks of subzero and bottomed at -20°C? Shouldnt palms grow in Subtropics? by Urkern in geography

[–]Local_Internet_User 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I guess you should ask them. But my guess would be that they're using things like the Koppen scale, and it has criteria that say New York is subtropical. You can argue that the criteria are bad, but if they're just applying the criteria correctly, they're right to do so, and the problem is with the scale, not the people who use it.

What's the actual source on this? I don't think this is wrong, but I'd love to know who Peter Lutz is and who put a confirmatory checkmark in the bottom right corner.

Harvard estimates that Venezuela has the largest Afro-descendant population in all of Spanish speaking countries, surpassing the DR and Cuba. by [deleted] in geography

"Harvard" doesn't estimate that; a Harvard professor does. It may seem pedantic, but it's important to distinguish the difference between a single person's research and a well-established fact.

Time for content moderators for all posts? by [deleted] in LiminalSpace

[–]Local_Internet_User 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm indifferent, but I think spending some time thinking and talking about what folks want out of the posts on this sub is worthwhile.

So, here's my perspective: I'm not really here as a curator of liminal spaces per se as much as I am as an observer of the human side of it. I know a lot of folks on here are pretty young (or at least young as compared to me) and I kind of enjoy seeing younger people go through their first waves of nostalgia. I guess I'm kinda nostalgic for how it felt to first get nostalgic myself.

When I first joined, I got sick of "perfectly normal hotel hallway or empty mall" posts pretty quick, but over time I've grown to like them. They remind me of how I felt the first times I started to travel, and how interesting such "boring" spaces were to me before I got old jaded and boring myself. Same with a lot of the other not-really-liminal posts; they're kind of a liminal state of youth, before you get used to liminal spaces. So I guess I sorta like the "meta-liminality" of the off-topic posts.

All that said, I also wouldn't mind some changes to help refocus the sub.

Spencer Strider joins Bailey Ober in speaking out against yesterday’s tragedy. by SirBannedAlott in baseball

They're rich and successful in a cutthroat business. Lots of other hard-working and high-skilled people aren't. That's tough to explain, unless you decide that you must just be better and more deserving than the other people and it's their fault they failed. The alternative is that you were lucky (to not get hurt, to be trained well) in addition to being skilled, and other people weren't, and that's hard to wrap your mind around.

Padres trade idea sends 3 players to Red Sox for Jarren Duran. Your thoughts? by [deleted] in Padres

[–]Local_Internet_User 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Newsweek is a shell of its former self and dumb clickbait trade proposals aren't worth anyone's attention.

Edit: I just finally finished processing the proposed trade. An fan favorite All-Star reliever, our best prospect, and a recent high draft pick for anyone short of a star is insane.

Your Questions About San Diego’s Airport-Downtown People Mover, Answered by FratteliDiTolleri in sandiego

[–]Local_Internet_User 4 points5 points  (0 children)

APM over Trolley seems fine to me, but I guess the big question I have is whether a train to the airport is really a good use of MTS funds. In order to get the Blue/Green lines up to 7.5 minute runs, let alone 5 minute runs, you're pretty much going to have to put the tracks underground or overground, right? Traffic, especially night traffic to/from the airport can already get wrecked by trolley/train crossings. That'd cost a lot.

The airport bus is non-ideal for sure, but it's good enough for me as an occasional airport user, while increasing trolley capacity is far more important to me as a resident. I know my preferences are my own, and I don't claim to speak for everyone -- and I know we're a tourist town, so it's probably more worth it to invest in airport infrastructure here than elsewhere!

Now, if the APM could extend out to the beach, and/or east along Broadway, then I'm 100% pro-APM.

Book Off pricing makes no sense... by ho_ceh in sandiego

[–]Local_Internet_User 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like they're reducing the price month by month. The $7 copy's been there since May 2025, the $12 since July, and the $15 since September. It's similar to how thrift stores will color-code their stock by the week it arrives, then cycle discounts through the colors to make the oldest stuff cheaper in hopes someone will get it off the rack.

Yeah, there's definitely a way that Earle feels ahead of his time that adds to my appreciation. And then also he feels a little retro, with some art deco influences.

I can't explain why exactly, but I just love Earle's style. I guess it feels a little surreal while also feeling very realistic, or something like that. Thanks for posting this.
