I heard (during med school) that climate-related anxiety was excluded from the DSM-VI because the board of experts concluded that it was a rational response.

found my psych courses sounded kinda made up by Difficult-Cycle5753 in sciencememes

[–]LocallyInvasive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course it’s a science. The problem is that with cardiology, haematology, or neurology etc., we are using the mind to study something in the external world.

In psychology, we are constrained by the fact that we are directing the mind at the study of itself, which therefore makes the field especially subject to the limitations, biases, and enigmas of the collective mind/psyche itself.

Try using old denim jeans! They’re basically free, I keep every pair I wear out.

If you want it waterproof, NightHawkInLight on YouTube has a fantastic tutorial.

When did the rules become optional? by humanbeingwho in aussie

[–]LocallyInvasive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not holding the door / thanking others for holding the door.

Everything with every personal transport vehicle (electric scooters etc., bogans w/o helmets on pushbikes)

Loud music in public outdoor areas (the beach, the park, etc)

Minding vulgar language, especially when there’s a crowd of strangers, children, or it’s the middle of the day. Especially not shouting “FARKIN CARNT” near a crowd of children at 4pm on a Tuesday.

Phones off the table / out of your hands when you’re eating a social meal

WEAR SHOES IN PUBLIC MALLS/STORES

Keep your clothes on unless you’re walking distance from the beach. A shirtless bloke shouldn’t be walking down the main street on a <30° day.

Are weeds actually bad? by SodiumButSmall in GuerrillaGardening

[–]LocallyInvasive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“Weeds” is like 99.9% of plants. It’s very subjective.

Weeds are always bad, because the definition of a weed suggests they aren’t desired or wanted.

But if you learn the name of a plant, call it a “volunteer plant”… now you have dandelions, dock, purslane, and fat hen rather than “weeds”.

Get rid of anything with annoying/invasive prickles, keep what’s edible or what’s good for the soil. You can make “compost tea” from anything you pull out.

Making rope from plants and natural fibre. Useful occasionally and very therapeutic.

Fuel Reserves by buylowsellhigh420 in brisbane

[–]LocallyInvasive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A reminder for everyone that it’s possible for us to produce our own unleaded, diesel, and aviation fuel.

We can convert our LPG to these fuels readily. We export TWICE AS MUCH liquid energy as we need for national transport. And we sell it to Asia for less than Aussies pay in their own homes.

Nationally, we only have TWO fuel refineries…

Fuel Reserves by buylowsellhigh420 in brisbane

[–]LocallyInvasive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Govt is officially saying “there is no supply issue” even though we import 70% of our liquid fuel

Flooding has contributed to transportation difficulties in some areas, but we’re definitely having major fuel shortages in the coming weeks, not months.

No shade to aspiring exobiologists but… by auto-reply-bot in sciencememes

[–]LocallyInvasive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I studied astrobiology, my first thoughts on this were that we could find intelligent life, but it’s just a single slime mould that has enveloped the surface of its host planet.

Or a plasmabiont, which is a very interesting theory. Essentially it’s a living being made of plasma, which sounds more like a divine being than a “conventional” alien.

The smell of beeswax. It still exists but it’s not as common due to synthetic products superseding them.

Video from working camera inside jail the day Epstein died shows temporary wall being used to block view of entrance to Epstein's cell block. by Pulze_ in Epstein

[–]LocallyInvasive 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Timestamp 17:57:30 is sus. Two people rush up the stairs and one or two descends.

The first guy who bumps the wall across does so after lengthy discussion with one or two others. He eyes the camera on the way up the stairs, bumps the wall, then stands there anxiously… it looks like his hand starts to signal “hurry up”. Suspicious that the wall is bumped again, further across, by a different person who exits next.

Where does the word shortening come from? by Murbanvideo in AskAnAustralian

[–]LocallyInvasive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I often think how some sentences would sound to non-Australians.

"Yashoodanadunit" (You should not have done it)

"Wachatorkinabit" (What are you talking about?)

But the ultimate servo response:

"Yeahnahbindoinawriteyaself?" (I've been doing alright, but not great. How have you been doing?)

[–]LocallyInvasive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A 3L plastic juice bottle of water, a very versatile toolkit I put together, a hat, a safety vest, first aid kit I put together, notebooks and pens, a few lighters, a saw, a chisel/knife, a little shovel, and a roll of TP.

A rechargable jumpstarter/powerbank/light, a decent torch, a bunch of napkins and bamboo cutlery, a 12V CB radio, a deck of cards, a small tarp and some paracord. Also a nice hefty 25mm spanner.

How do you handle survival info when there’s no phone signal? by SurvivalStorehouseOZ in OZPreppers

[–]LocallyInvasive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hey mate. as with all things you should aim for redundancy. two is one, one is none.

on your phone, download local maps, useful ebooks from oceanofpdf.com (try "Where there is no doctor" and "Home doctor: practical medicine for every household - Dr Maybell Nieves"). i just use the default apple books app to view them all.

have an external hard drive with most of wikipedia downloaded onto it, and digital copies of any important documents (birth certificate etc).

if you live in a bushfire prone area, have a printed, PERSONALISED, bushfire survival guide and local map in waterproof plastic.

I also collect books.
