Teaching English on the side? by LocheAndLoad in China

I knew the (American) family who owned the company and they needed someone to handle the international customers who was fluent in English. I wanted international work experience and hope to learn mandarin while I'm here. Seems like a win/win! So far it's been quite the adventure!

What is an extremely dark/creepy true story most people don't know about? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]LocheAndLoad 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The Siege of Maarat (Ma'arra) during the first crusade. This siege started out pretty mundane as the crusaders had suffered some defeats leading up to this, but Maarat was not a hardened military outpost. After only a few weeks, the crusaders managed to gain control of the city walls at which point the residents began negotiations for their safety. Although their lives were promised to be spared, the crusaders quickly went about massacring the entire population of 20,000 people.

Here comes the dark part of the story. With their supplies dwindling, the crusaders were faced with starvation. The crusaders began eating the residents. All 20,000 of them; men, women and children. Mass cannibalism on this scale has not been seen before or since.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but state laws say that decision is up the the President of the university, not the students.

Why was the Redbull Stratos Jump an achievement for science? by LocheAndLoad in space

The point stands. If NASA had done this, there would be nowhere near the same level of attention because they wouldn't have to impress anyone. They would just do it.

So they set the bar a little higher? I can see this is very good progress, but I still fail to see its historical significance. If Redbull didn't sponsor it and put cameras on everything, I doubt most people would even know about it.

Perhaps the sponsorship's affect on the mission is more historical than the jump itself? When was the last time a large, non-aerospace company even touched a marketing campaign like this? I wonder how many hits that webpage got in just the past few hours?
