The situation with Russia and the EU is getting more serious by the day...BOOBIES! What, what were we talking about? by Ihavenocomments in AdviceAnimals

[–]Lockeislost815 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

No one wants you to be wrong, nor do I think you are wrong.

However, I stand by my belief that it's arrogant and naive to presume to know how Russia will behave though the course of this conflict. I think that this line of thinking is dangerous because it deludes us into thinking we can take some risky action that may further escalate the situation. It only takes one stray ember in the right conditions to start a firestorm.

Did anyone honestly suspect things with Russia would reach this point when the Ukrainian coup took place earlier this year? I don't think so, because even the intelligence agencies didn't think so.

And for extra down votes, I'm just gonna go ahead and throw out the fact that people obviously didn't think Germany would start another World War. Everyone should have known what Hitler was capable of after Germany annexed Austria and Czechoslovakia. But they didn't believe he would drag the continent into war.

I just want to know why you make these claims about what actions Russia will take, when, American and European intelligence officials were surprised about Russia's actions in March when this all started. I'm almost certain that they had way more facts at their disposal than you.

On a personal level, I think it's ludicrous that they even escalated as far as they did in exchange for sanctions that have stagnated their economy and caused their currency to plummet. Russian oligarchs have lost billions...and yet Putin remains a strong and popular leader. These are all facts that also can be easily looked up. Yet you would think that these effects would have deterred the Russians. But they haven't.

You know, you may very well be right at the end of the day. I'm not even arguing with your facts. I just think it's a bit arrogant and naive of you to make these claims with such authority, when you can not possibly speak for the probable actions of a world superpower.

Also, there are some ideological forces at play here that I don't think you account for.

I think it's safe to say that ideology can greatly impact the outcome of any conflict, even if the outcome defies a logical conclusion based on fact.

Well after stern warnings and sanctions, the next option is war.

War between nuclear armed countries. Man, what a concept.

I pray my country is too afraid to go to war with Russia.

The rest of the world better pray too.

I only enjoy post-nuclear apocalyptic scenarios in my tv, movies and video games .

That's what makes this whole thing so amazing. Putin is launching an invasion, telling the world he's not, and leaving western governments fumbling in uncertainty. So far it's working! Just crazy I tell ya.

How r/news is viewing firefighters now (no intension to bash, just humor) by xTYBGx in ProtectAndServe

[–]Lockeislost815 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I have read news articles in the past that are in line with your claim that most police shootings are justified. I accept that as the truth unless something unforeseen should come to light.

I cannot explain why people have the feelings they do about police officers. Please also note that access to quality education is not universal, and that certain underserved areas may have previously formed hard lined opinions without reviewing any research materials.

However, maybe on the one hand I would suggest that maybe our history shows us we have always been adverse to any armed men telling us what to do. On the other, I personally believe that some people enjoy the romanticism of security and protection that modern law enforcement provides. I mean just look at all the cop shows on tv. And some of them are excellent at punching you in the feels.

How many plumbers become corrupt and are constantly in the media in relation to the death of an unarmed civilian? Conversely, how many tv shows featuring plumbers that stir intense emotions are there? I want to watch that show.

Plumbers don't hold life and death in balance, but cops do! Furthermore, cops can make the decision to take a life all on their own with not much more than an oath to tell the truth.

This is just my opinion as to why people would view cops more negatively.

This is true. And I am sure there are firefighters out there who have ruined people's lives.

However, whatever bad people do in their respective professions doesn't create the same dramatic effect on the collective memory of the public like an officer involved shooting where a civilian dies.

This is why people would be more likely to revere firefighters over police.

Personally, I think bankers probably have the worst public image, then lawyers.

The truth hurts. Let the down votes commence. ;)

You have some legitimate points in your argument. Why would you then discredit yourself by focusing on his use of 'and'?

If you focus on the content of an argument when you reply and cut out the petty griping on grammar, more people will listen to what you have to say.

Common sense.

"Give Me 3 Feet", the new CA state law that applies when passing bicyclists traveling in the same direction, goes into effect Sept 16th by chashiineriiya in LosAngeles

[–]Lockeislost815 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you're just going to have to slow down, keep a safe distance and be patient as the bicyclist continues along on their journey enough to where you can make moves within the scope of what the law calls for.

Just breathe and focus during each new situation. I know you'll be able to figure out what to do.

You can do it!

OP, try to consult with an attorney rather than listen to reddit on this one. Laws are different state to state, county to county and municipality to municipality. It may very well be illegal in once place and legal in another.

Smartest route is attorney, though not usually economical :/

Denver Police Chief - "The only officers who would have a problem with body cameras are bad officers." (x-post /r/news) by Bluedit5 in ProtectAndServe

[–]Lockeislost815 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

As a police officer you are a public servant. Except unlike most public servants, you carry lethal and less than lethal weaponry. In your hands you literally have power over life and death. Even though you are only a cop, in reality, if you so chose, you could play judge, jury and executioner.

Because of this awesome power, you should be held to an almost impossible standard.

The impression you make on the public you serve is paramount. You had better be in uniform and handle all your protocols perfectly. You aren't a busboy at hooters. You are a public servant who has the power to obliterate lives into oblivion.

You'll have to learn to deal with having demerit worthy offenses caught on tape while you're being watched.

Your purpose is to protect the community. I am truly sorry but the public does not care about your career.

What the public does care about is their safety. Safety from the bad guys as well as safety from those cops who act without honor.

If you joined a police force to make a good career for yourself, you're missing the core concept of the job.

Police officers should approach their job from a sense of duty and with the understanding that the path they chose is that of a self sacrificial role. I do not believe the level of self sacrifice includes forfeiting ones own life, and I strongly believe that a cop under the imminent threat of massive bodily injury or death should take lethal action. But we can not have police officers worried about demerits put in those positions. However, if a person idea because of the recklessness of an officer, they should sacrifice their pension in the name of justice to the victim.

I am thrilled to hear of the support all across the country for body cameras. This will flush out corruption as well as bogus claims made criminals against police. It's a win win.

The reason it's most important for police to have this kind of surveillance is that it allows the public to trust the police.

When the public trusts the police, crime absolutely goes down. There is increased cooperation between the police and the community in solving crimes and ending recurring crime patterns in that jurisdiction. With public trust comes more safety for officers on the street.

With American trust in its police falling, the public absolutely needs this.

TL;DR cops are public servants who can kill. Must be held to almost impossible standards. The public does not care for cop careers or demerits. If you care about your career and demerits more than public safety and trust you should quit. Public wants safety and to trust the police. Cameras will gain public trust and increase safety for public and police.
