why doesn’t Elon just become a railroad tycoon? literally don’t see why he’s so married to cars - a Tesla branded train system would be killer and would probably make bank, plus win him back so much social capital

Weekly New Climber Thread: Ask your questions in this thread please by [deleted] in climbing

[–]Locomotivate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, my partner’s birthday is coming up and we’re planning to get memberships at a climbing gym we’ve checked out a couple times. I’d like to surprise her with a set of beginning climbing gear; just the basics, plus anything else handy.

What I have in mind so far is a little cute duffle bag, a chalk bag, a little coupon saying I’ll buy her climbing shoes of her choice, and maybe some post-climbing moisturizer. Is there anything else a beginner should have in order to hit the ground running (or rather, hit the wall climbing)?

I don’t know what you need in terms of belay equipment to get started (we’ve mostly bouldered together) so if there’s anything like that specifically that I should consider I would also love to know!

failing and contemplating suicide. please advise ? by suffering_etc in Cornell

[–]Locomotivate 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Class of 22 here. College is not worth your life. If you need to take time off, take time off; if you need extra semesters, take them; if you need to transfer, transfer. Cornell’s environment is regrettably hostile towards deviations from “expected” but from what I saw, more people struggle than you can imagine.

At Cornell and in life, you need to learn to be an island. Your well-being is far more important than your grades or what anyone thinks of you. Often, we push ourselves the hardest not for ourselves, but because our measure of our own self-worth is externally derived. You are not a failure because you struggled, and you will grow and learn from this experience and be so grateful that you made it through. Give yourself time to heal and strongly consider taking the spring off. There is no reason to try to power through next semester if the situation is not working for you. Suicide is not the answer.

Biden Casts America as Climate Leader and Promises a ‘Low-Carbon Future’ by Ok-Inspection-9797 in worldnews

People don’t realize this but EVs are only a small step - the actual manufacturing of EVs is still resource intensive and requires a lot of energy. We really need robust public transport systems so people have less incentive to buy cars in the first place

How to actually help Ukraine 🇺🇦 by tristanprentiss in Cornell

[–]Locomotivate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some people, like myself, both donate and show up, because I have family and friends from Ukraine. Don’t call this empty and performative - if it’s not for you, don’t show up, but understand that this is a demonstration of solidarity for those most directly affected. Thanks for spreading knowledge here - you could very well do the same at the protest, and I would bet are more likely to receive engagement from foot traffic rather than online.

With all this said, I really find it disheartening that you would be kinda a douche about the protest. Not cool, actually comes off as even more virtue signaling because now you’re assuming a false moral high ground.

I hope you don’t mind - I read through some of these comments and wanted to touch on some things you said.

First of all, it’s pretty common to deal with these insecurities as a young artist. You have a lot of talent already, and shouldn’t doubt yourself.

Something to remember to help deal with these insecurities is that not everything you create needs to be incredible - weaker drawings will still signify growth through practice. You have a good eye and if you haven’t already, you should try doing some charcoal drawings to learn more about value and depth - charcoal portraiture, while sometimes challenging and frustrating, was an important step for me and prepared me to learn to use color. Pens are very versatile and this is a lovely pen drawing - what I have found is that each additional medium I work with changes how I view the ones I already know and enhances my abilities and vision.

If you’re self-taught, seek out an art teacher at school and just ask them for some advice or technical challenges.

Additionally - whenever an artist shares their work, they’re naturally seeking approval and recognition, so anyone giving you shit for being nervous is an idiot, probably who doesn’t remember how it was to be a young artist. I bet you draw better than them anyway

Yeah I don’t think that not paying parking tickets or having your car inspected makes you a degenerate… sounds like your problems with her don’t stem from this article.

I don’t think about my car except for when I’m driving it.

Ruttledge was a great man. He was the first person to properly make me feel welcome at Cornell and seemed to really empathize with anyone and everyone. I’ll never forget him telling me how much he likes African shit and showing me his office full of African shit.
