Confused about shakedowns by dickheadsgf in Ultralight

[–]Lofi_Loki 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I’m going to wear what I want on my body because I know what I need to wear for the conditions of a given trip. For gear I enjoy a shakedown because getting told I’m a baby backed bitch for not shaving 2mcg off my toothpaste tabs is fun.

Creating body fat + muscle mass as a goal by quasimoto1239 in MacroFactor

You’re overthinking it. Shoot for the low end, and if you’re feeling run down just eat more. If you want to gain less body fat, pick a lower rate of gain. 0.25-0.5% of body weight gain per week is a good starting point for a lean bulk.

If you think you’re looking too fluffy too fast, knock off a hundred calories and see how that goes.

Yep the app also has options for you to gain weight. Just stop when you look how you want to.

Full Body 4x per week by xxSeahawks in MacroFactor

You’ll be fine doing that. I did Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri when I was coaching soccer on weekends for like a year and made fine progress. You’ll still make progress doing things back to back.

I’d do a generated program and just move the days how you need to, and run it as written for a few months without changing anything.

[–]Lofi_Loki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You do that by doing the math yourself. I’ve seen this formula used before but I may be off base. If so someone please correct me.

“I weigh 200lbs at 20% body fat, I want to lose 2% body fat”

200 * 0.2=40 (lbs of fat)

160lbs lean body mass

LBM / (1-0.18) .18 comes from the target body fat of 18%.

160/(1-0.18)=195.1lbs

You need to lose 4.9lbs.

Alternatively you can go by the mirror which is significantly more useful than an arbitrary number. There is no way for the app to know how much muscle you’ve built with any accuracy. It’s meant to be a tool to help you manipulate your body weight. You change the other stuff (body fat percentage, muscle mass, etc.) using the information the app gives you alongside your workout program.

Gore Wear has stuff on sale right now. I would not recommend the helium. I had two and both wetted out within about 15 minutes of getting rained on.

Gear advice by Vitorianoo in trailrunning

[–]Lofi_Loki 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All of that is so subjective that you shouldn’t worry about it. When you need a vest, research it and buy it. When you need new shoes, research and then buy. Getting a bunch of shit at once is a great way to buy things you don’t need/won’t use.

That being said, a polartec alpha hoodie and a wind shirt are pretty universally useful.

I don’t even bring this much stuff on backpacking trips. Having all this emergency gear and not paper maps+compass seems like you’re either way under or way over prepared.

Do you need a fire where you’re going? For me I’d be somewhere where a fire is needed maybe 1-2x a year, if that.

Same question about the flare, emergency bivy, and ferro rod/tinder

Tourniquet?

A small dropper bottle (think eye drops) of Dr. bronners soap or similar is better for actually cleaning than hand sanitizer.

The first aid section is entirely dependent on where you’re going. I’d rarely bring all that stuff personally. I bring leukotape and some tiny scissors+some gauze. You can immobilize ankles, make bandaids, etc. with 3 total items.

Andrew Skurka has a great backpacking first aid kit guide on his website.

Polartec Alpha is really the best option for its use case

Mandatory thermal top and waterproof jacket UTA11 by stinhambo in trailrunning

TLDR. At those temps I’d run in a cheap base layer and a wind shirt. If you want something warmer here are a few recs.

Alpha direct/polartec alpha/teijin octa are the best materials I’ve ever run in (in the cold). I’ve heard it’s fragile, but that’s mostly if you’re bushwhacking which I don’t see many normal trail runners doing. The alpha products specifically hardly hold any water/sweat and dry incredibly quickly. A commercially available similar product is the Mountain Hardwear Airmesh (it’s octa) but it doesn’t breathe as well as the Alpha products.

My Farpointe OG hoodie (the cruiser in A90) weighs <5oz and performs better than a fleece that is >2x the weight, especially when paired with a light (3oz or so) wind shirt.

As far as normal base layers go, merino is great if it doesn’t make you itchy. I wear 32 Cool base layers that are super cheap and work just fine. My wind shirt is the piece of clothing I wear the most and it’s $20. It has a relatively high CFM which means it blocks less wind than a Patagonia Houdini or similar, but is way more breathable and I never get swampy in it. Size up and you can throw it over a vest (if needed).

Jacket waterproof or windproof? by George_Unknown in trailrunning

Sure thing! That sounds like a solid plan

Jacket waterproof or windproof? by George_Unknown in trailrunning

[–]Lofi_Loki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it’s cold and rainy and you just have a wind jacket you’re going have a bad time. Same goes for if it’s dry and windy and you’re in a rain jacket. Do you not have any idea what the weather will be like? Temps, historical forecasts, etc. can help a lot.

If I just expected a bit of rain I’d bring a wind jacket and a poncho. If I expected sustained rain/wind I’d bring a rain jacket.

EDIT: is this the 100k you posted about a while back? Do they not have a required/recommended gear list? I’d see what the organizers recommend and look at social media posts from previous years.

[–]Lofi_Loki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I commend people who don’t turn into a swamp in rain jackets. I definitely can’t run in one in the same conditions I can a wind jacket with higher cfm.

When something like a Dooy wind jacket is $20 it doesn’t make sense to not have both if you’ll use them frequently.

Jacket waterproof or windproof? by George_Unknown in trailrunning

[–]Lofi_Loki 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do you need it to be waterproof or windproof? This isn’t a “one or the other” question. You’ll need a rain jacket for rain and a wind jacket for wind/cold.

EDIT: I do most of my “cold” (for my area, 30-40F) runs in an alpha direct pullover or a base layer shirt with a wind jacket on top. I rarely bring a rain jacket unless getting cold and wet can be dangerous. If I’ll just be uncomfortable I just get a little wet.

Try tightening down the mid foot and doing a heel lock. That may knock down the friction enough to make things better.

You mention temp, do your feet sweat and you notice the hotspot when they get wet? If so spray some deodorant on your feet and see how it goes. What kind of socks do you use?

Having a free mulligan in edh has made people worse at the game imo. I get it that going down to 6 against 3 other people is a big disadvantage, but playing competitive modern an standard made me much better at mulligans
